The Moderation, Reading

I'm a fan of the Mod. The food is usually good, reasonably priced for its quantity and quality. Every time I've been there, the beer is good and the garden is great on a warm evening.

Same owners as the Lyndhurst and the Warwick Arms, used to have the Spring near Theale. Not a grungy pub with a big telly, but if you're going out in a group, it fits the bill well.

The Warwick Arms, Reading

Agree with the previous review - this is, IMO, the best Thai in Reading. The beer's really good too. They do mid-week specials that make it even more reasonable. Well worth a visit - though it's often a bit on the quiet side.

The Pot Kiln, Frilsham

A perfect place to try some great local game food (rabbit, fallow deer, partridge etc), washed down with West Berks brewery's finest. The beer is always good, the food is excellent, and considering the quality, not too badly priced. A Sunday lunch for 4 with a few drinks and 3 courses, would work out about 40 a head including service.

The downsides are the size of the bar (it's not even a waiting room for the restaurant) and the outside gents toilet - all very quaint, but in the winter it's freezing!

Highly recommended for a great lunch of locally sourced, well cooked rustic game.

The Winning Hand, Beenham

The one time we visited, for lunch on a Saturday, the main part of the pub was practically empty, there was a party (might have been a wedding or anniversary) going on in the back.

Carpet was a mess - large burns, a bit sticky in places. The food (simple sandwiches with salad & fries) was very uninspiring. I won't be hurrying back...

The Spring Inn, Sulhamstead

Stopped into the Spring for lunch (in November 09) for the first time since it reopened and it was a bit of a disappointment; no atmosphere, a bit clinical. The food was OK but nothing special, and it wasn't all that cheap.

Interesting choice of guest beers, and I guess they were still getting used to running the place since the service was a bit erratic. Maybe one to try again in the summer, but not as good as the Fox & Hounds in Theale.

The Fox and Hounds, Theale

I consider the Fox & Hounds to be my local - it's a bit quiet sometimes (since it's a bit of a walk from Theale, and most people will drive there).

Since it was done up and under new a new landlord, it's become more of a gastro-pub with a decent range of nice food - I've been there for lunch and dinner maybe a dozen times and it's always been decent. The beer is usually good, though the range is limited to Wadworth only.

All in, a good pub for a spot of unpretentious, reasonably priced grub and a pint or two.

The Thatchers Arms, Theale

(sorry, meant to say "early 2009" when it closed.

The Thatchers Arms, Theale

The pub closed in mid-2009. I stopped by today (in Jan 2010) and asked if it was re-opening, but the gent who answered the door said "No, never". He's bought it and is turning it into a private residence.

The Fox and Hounds, Theale

I'd echo the recent comments - since it's been done up after the smoking ban, it's a totally different place - more of a mid-range gastro pub than a foodie heaven, and not the drinker's den that it used to be.

Makes a pleasant stop off for lunch, serves a good range of Wadworth beers too.

The Thatchers Arms, Theale

Sadly, now closed - a sign on the inside of the door says that due to current economic conditions etc, it's not viable any more.

I went a few times - the food was good, though a touch pricey by some comparisons, though it was never busy and no great surprise that it didn't last out.
