The Victory Inn, St Mawes

Just spent the week in St. Mawes and really liked this boozer. Good beer and atmosphere. Obviously the locals' favoured watering hole. One niggle and this doesn't affect my rating but Landlord take note. I had a pint of the cornish shag that was very cloudy and I mentioned this to the barmaid who went 'round the back' and came back to say that this was how the beer was suppose to be. I bought a pint of Skinners' Betty Stoggs that was very good. Disappointing blip but didn't prevent me from revisiting when the beer was top notch (Betty Stoggs again).

The Bell, Cannon Street

Used to come here in its glory years as one of the finest purveyors of Courage ales. Popped in the other night and had a pint of Courage Best for old times sake. I thought it tasted a bit metalic and told the barmen. He offered me something else without a fuss, very impressed. The Harvey's was every good. Great little pub and a real gem for the area. Miss the old lady that use to run it though, and the excellent Courage Best. What happened to that beer?

Old Brewery Tavern, Canterbury

Popped in a for an early supper with the wife and kids and it was fine. Not a trad boozer but had some local ales on and my pint was good. Was offered a taste first too. Pretty quiet when we went but it was a funny time. I imagine the place gets quite busy.
Good.

The Smack, Whitstable

It's The Rovers Return on acid.

The Orange Brewery, Belgravia

The below post may be refering to my comments. No, presently this place doesn't offer an inspired selection of ales, but the two they do - Adnams and Harveys - are served up very well. I would rather have a small selection of ale come up a treat than a huge selection served indifferently.
It may have a look of a 'posh bar' but I'd rather a posh bar with decent ale than traditional one that serves up filth.
If all you are after is a traditional British pub then avoid and go to The Fox and Hounds.

The Orange Brewery, Belgravia

Went to the opening night here and the place looked amazing. Had the best pint of Adnams out of Southwold, excluding pehaps The Nags Head up the road. The guys here are serious about making this a real ale pub and good luck to them. Note to Randello - you say "posh bars replacing old pubs like The Ebury, The Botanist ot Thomas Cubitt" well The Cubitt has only been named thus since its refurb. It was previously The Joiners Arms and it was a pile of poo.

The Bell Inn, Walberswick

Ahh, false alarm. Enjoyed a few visits here in June and it was top notch. staff were friendly and efficient, food very good and beer delicious. Some purists may say the ale is a bit too cold but, after five minutes sitting in the sun, this can be an advantage. Looking forward to my next visit already.

The Bell Inn, Walberswick

Popped to Walberswick just after Easter and managed to get a couple of quick visits here. I had heard there had been a management change.
Beer still top notch but a distinct lack of staff meant I had to wait almost 10 minutes for a pint - hopefully teething problems.
Back up in a couple of weeks, hopefully will be giving a glowing report shortly after.

The Princess of Wales, Blackheath

Popped here again a year after my last visit and the beer was fine and the sevice friendly. I didn't eat here.

The Hollist Arms, Lodsworth

This one of those pubs that holds so much promise on the outside and then when you walk in the door there is something not right. I'm fussy about my traditional pubs and this has too much of a modern bar to satisfy my idealist expectations. However, if you are a foodie I would approach the menu here with great caution, unless you like gravy....lots of it ....and thick. If you like your duck breast well cooked and swimming in the stuff then book your table now!
There are a lot of things that people will enjoy about this pub, but for fussy folk like me you can not help thinking what could have been (could be?).
Sorry.

Three Horseshoes, Elsted

Lucky enough to visit this place on a mild spring day and enjoy the garden when it was busy but not packed. The Flowerpots was excellent and had to return to the bar two more times to make the best of it. Had a great ploughmans too.
Decided to have dinner there that night (wife and I staying nearby in Minstead) after we had had a dreadful experience in another pub a few miles away the night before. Glad we made this choice as the food and atmosphere waas excellent. we were sat facing the huge fire and enjoyed some excellent venison. This was good hearty pub grub yes, but very well cooked and presented and certainly not overpriced.
Anyone who likes their country pubs to be authentic and traditional then I think you'll be happy here. If you want to know which pub local to this that we had one of the worst meals ever, then look at my list of reviews.

The Harp, Covent Garden

What a Boozer! I've walked past this plas hundreds of times over the years and never given it a look in, but thanks to BITE I have discovered one of the best served pints in London. Started up with a couple of pints of Ringwood and when that ran out (I had one of the last pints and I was passed the message that I could exchange it if it wasn't up to scratch) I moved to the Harvey's. Both were served with that fantastic frothy, bubbley head that you so rarely see these days as "swan neck" spouts become the norm. Nice interior, friendly staff and great beer - a rare find in central London. 3 a pint? Money well spent in this place.

The Old Neptune, Whitstable

I avoid this pub in the Summer, especially during the daytime, but on a winter's evening there is no finer experience than walking along the cold, dark sea front and walking through the door of the Neptune to find the heart of Whitstable's wied and wonderful. Although they will never win any awards, I've never had a bad pint there; they're even doing Harvey's now. Note that all bad reviews are from Summer visits and if I had to serve some of those that turn up then, my bar skills might be a bit rubbish too.

The Four Horseshoes, Whitstable

It took me three years of living in Whitstable to finally visit this pub and it is a gem. Beer is fine, they have a lovely snug area and it is friendly. The sunken bar gives it a nice quirky feel. Definitely worth a visit if passing.

The Duke Of Cumberland Hotel, Whitstable

This is very much a hit or miss pub, with recent visits falling in to the latter category. Ale always ok (as ok as S.N. can be) but on Friday nights there are too many groups of 'lemon squeezers' for my liking...the Bouncers are there for a reason, I imagine. Whitstable has a lot better to offer...

The Cricketers, Canterbury

I had the worst pint of Masterbrew I have ever tasted in this pub on a busy Thursday night in August, however the band, and atmosphere was great. I will give it another go soon but will certainly try before I buy!

Ship Centurion Arminius, Whitstable

I moved down to Whitstable a few years ago and this is undobtably the finest "pub" in Town. Beer is always good, service great and it boasts an eclectic collection of characters that do not stare at you when you walk in the door. The only complaint would be that the TV's are always on even when there isn't a big sporting event happening but I thnk this practice may be changing, which will only improve the place. If you visit Whitstabl for the day and fancy a pint, then make sure you have one here!

24 Sep 2008 23:25

The Shipwrights Arms, Faversham

The beer here is great, however a few months ago I came for a spot of lunch with the family and happened to mention i wasn't happy with one of the dishes. Well, crikey I may as well have ran through the bar naked and wee'd on the carpet by the way we were treated after that. I may be cutting off my nose, etc, but I will never go back.

The Fleece Inn, Bretforton

What a wonderful pub. Great beer, lovely garden, beatiful building, friendly Landlord, delicious food and a pretty waitress. Doesn't get better than this, really.
Ok, you may have to wait a little for your food but so what? The longer you stay here the better and you know it is freshly cooked on the premises.
Bravo!

The Lord Nelson, Southwold

There is a bench at the end of this cul-de-sac that overlooks the coast of Southwold. Sitting here with the kids and a pint of Broadside from the Lord Nelson, whilst the wife pops round the shops, never fails to make me a happy man. This place easily sells the best pint in Southwold. The pub itself is seems great in the short time I spend there buying my pint. although only visited in the Summer, i would say this was a pub for all seasons.

9 Jul 2008 21:38

The Bell Inn, Walberswick

One of my favourite haunts, I am (arguably)lucky enough to only visit this pub out of holiday season when I hear it is packed to the nines with holiday makers. The beer is always excellent and the uneven floors catch me out every time. The food is very good and uncomplicated. There are not many pubs I would rather spend an afternoon sipping Adnams in than this and the garden's great too. Always been happy with the service.

9 Jul 2008 21:26

The Moulin Inn, Moulin

I really liked this pub, it had a nice feel to it and the staff were very friendly. The beer was well kept, I only tried the Braveheart but it was a canny pint. Sandwiches were good and the hot food looked ok too. I could have easily stayed there all afternoon.

29 Mar 2008 20:51

The Barony Bar, Edinburgh

Went for pint and a read of the paper on a recent visit to Edinburgh and I have to say I was hit by the smell when I walked through the door. I wouldn't say it smelt like wee, more like stale beer. Anyway, I soon became immune and enjoyed a couple of pints of Deuchars which was very good. It is a classic drinkers boozer and the interior is amazing but I wouldn't take the wife there for lunch.

29 Mar 2008 20:43

The Princess of Wales, Blackheath

Blackheath was my regular drinking place during the 80's and 90's, before many of the pubs lost their character, but rarely used this one, so when a friend suggested we met here on a Friday night, I was expecting the worst (especially after reading some of the reviews here). I am glad to say I was pleasantly srprised. First of all, it wasn't heaving and there wasn't a single Bexleyheath "lemon squeezer" in sight. Service wasn't slow, in fact the barstaff were very friendly and helpful (they even topped up our pints without prompting!). The London Pride was very good (the pub has never been noted for its Ale) and yes, it was a bit pricey but so are a lot of places. Didn't have any food but a friend says that he has been for Sunday lunch a few times and has no complaints. Perhaps last night was just a fluke but I will be returning to find out.

29 Mar 2008 20:29

The Star Tavern, Belgravia

I like this boozer. The beer's always good (8/10) and they serve a late lunch which is handy and the chips are bloody good. Not worth going out of your way for, and that's why I like it.

7 Mar 2008 22:02

The Thomas Cubitt, Belgravia

I love this place. You can go in for a few pints, a bottle of wine or a cocktail, either way the charm of the place makes it very hard to leave. The Real Ale here is not for purists but the Guinness is first class, one of the finest pints served in the SW postcode. Food is great and the wine list is, indeed, excellent. Rude staff? No way. Shame it was refurbished? No way. Great Whiskies? Oh yes.
