Waggon and Horses, Oldbury

Sadly this place has been closed for the last couple of months or so, it couldn't compete, or didn't want to compete, with The Court of Requests, the two year old 'Spoons next door, big shame really because the Waggons interior is pretty spectacular and the cask ale range was the best for miles around in it's hetday, we often used to use the upstairs function room on our return from the Cheltenham Festival, will it ever reopen? that's for Brains Brewery to answer.

The Hamstead, Hamstead

Went for lunch here today for the first time in a couple of years, we were there just before midday and a few folk like us were waiting for it to open, within ten minutes the lounge was half full, you can see why it's so popular when the meals appear, they are a decent plateful so go hungry, a selection of seven or eight main meals are available at two for £9.
Sadly things were not so bright on the ale front, two handpumps, both in use on my previous visit but only one this time, it was Hobgoblin which seems to get everywhere these days but it was in decent nick, the rest was your usual keg fare, we had two Hobgoblins & two J20s which came to £9.80.
Overall a solid boozer, big menu with portions to match.
8/10

Or even a convenience shop.

The Doll's House, Oldbury

Boarded up.

The Phoenix, Oldbury

Due to reopen on the 11th of July 2014 at 12 noon, after what as been described to me as a 'Harvester' style makeover, but that was purely based on its external appearance, watch this space!

The Fountain, Lower Gornal

Went in yesterday & still the usual boring 7 uninspiring selection of ales they have had since I started using it over 10 years ago, don't think I'll bother again, it is surrounded by better, and better value pubs.

Royal Oak, Shrewton

The landlord has done a bunk with the Christmas Club money, check your change.

The Wheatsheaf, West Bromwich

My favourite pub in West Brom, been using it for nearly thirty years.
A good value range of Holden's ales, the price of the mild has only just broken the 2 barrier, always an obscure guest on.
Large lunchtime menu served in decent portions.
Very popular before & after WBA home games.
Most sporting events shown, TV in L shaped bar, projection screen in long lounge which is also the venue for regular rock bands on a Friday or Saturday night.
Sun trap patio out the back, smoking shelter there too.

Busbys, West Bromwich

Recently renamed "The Craic House" or should that be crack house, you decide...

The Beaufort Arms, Hamstead

Apologies for previous post, I was refering to The Joker on Hamstead Road close to its junction with Woodfort Road

The Rovers Return, Salford

All human life is here, from feckless layabouts to captains of industry.
Beer tastes like cold tea & frequently served in short measures, but does have extensive supplies of Champagne for those special occasions.
Toilets appear to extend into the terraced house next door.
The famous hotpot is off the menu for the foreseable future.
Cafe, corner shop, chippie & bookies all within spitting distance.

The Beaufort Arms, Hamstead

Closed, now a Tesco Express, don't suppose the locals will miss the mass brawls at chucking out time too much though.

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

Heard a whisper that Hackney Council plan to discuss listing the pub at their meeting on Monday.
Can anyone confirm?

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

For someone who detests this pub so much, the poster directly below this has an awful lot of unhelpful things to say on this page, maybe he won't be happy until every pub except HIS current favourite is closed, then no doubt he'll come back on here bemoaning the fact he can't get served in his chosen watering hole because it has become too popular.
Why is he so embittered ('scuse the pun) was he barred, did someome beat him to the last bag of scratchings, would no one talk to him (hard to believe I know), did Burnley give him the Spanish archer? I think we should be told!

LONG LIVE THE WENLOCK ARMS

The Commercial, Scarborough

Stopped for one on Bank Holiday Saturday, interior a little tired & a passable pint of Tetley & Bombardier, service ok & beer topped up without having to be asked, Sky Sports was a bonus but not a patch on Cellars down the road.

Indigo Alley, Scarborough

Popped in on Bank Holiday Sunday only a dozen people in but seemed so much brighter & airier than it used to be, two of us had an ale plus one each lager & cider all excellent for 10.30, prompt friendly service, back on "the crawl" now.

Fellows, Dudley

Went here for lunch with my father and wheelchair which is where the first black mark is given, there appears to be an entrance on the front but impossible to get chair through with the cars parked so had to use side door which is on quite a slope & tricky with a chair.
Once inside the transformation from a very tired & grubby Beefeater to a smart, contemporary bar with separate area for diners was amazing with sofas, window seats & tables in the bar all gleaming, Holden's have done a great job on the upgrade of this place, the second black mark was when asking for a pint & a half of mild only to be told, despite the pumpclip, that it was only available in bottles whether this is a permanent arrangement I don't know so we had the regular Holden's bitter which was excellent, we ordered our food at the bar from the ever helpful barmaid/waitress & took our seats in the dining area with the food taking around 15 minutes.
Overall an excellent addition to the real ale scene in Dudley town centre along with the Lamp Tavern (Bathams) & The Courthouse (Free) with the added attraction of a substantial menu.

The Royal Children, Nottingham

Sadly this pub was severly damaged by fire today 11/6/11

The Joseph Livesey, Perry Barr

This pub is actually called The Arthur Robertson.
At the front of of the Perry Barr One Stop shopping centre by the bus station, Perry Barr railway station next door.
Its a typical 'spoons, cheap beer & food, .
I tend to use this place of a lunchtime when the service is swift, I suspect its a different story of an evening, when the local student population descend.

The Old Hop Pole, West Bromwich

This place is really on the up, three cask ales including ever present Wye Valley HPA, all o n top form.
Popped in last Thursday (Dec 16th) to find a Carol Service in full swing led by two local vicars, one of whom won the card sent around by the pub darts team!
Friendly and prompt service with mince pies and chestnuts roasted on their own roaring range provided gratis.
As the pub is a bit of a shrine to West Bromwich Albion expect it to be busier in matchdays.

The Railwaymans Arms, Bridgnorth

local ales a-plenty in this pub which forms part of platform one at Bridgnorth, the northern terminus of the Severn Valley Railway.

Limited seating inside but benches on the platform & in front of the pub, also an awning to the side with plastic tables & chairs.

If you hear a train pulling in get up the bar sharpish, it gets very popular, they allow plastic glasses on the trains so ask if your train is due.

Currently celebrating their 40th anniversary, they have a 5% porter commemorating same 2.60/pt very moreish.

I can't leave this review without mentioning that they sell Reg Mays pork pies, if you've had one you know what I mean, if you haven't, then you're in for a treat!

25 Jul 2010 20:55

The Odd Fellows Arms, West Bromwich

closed & bought up by decorating shop next door & extended into same, no loss to the real ale scene in West Brom but a pub lost etc etc ......

The Old Scalby Mills, Scarborough

Walked from the Spa Centre all the way around the seafront to build up an appetite (& a thirst) for this place, one of my favourites in Scarborough it never fails to hit the spot.

Ale around the 2.70-3.00 mark, consistently well kept, & a couple from Yorkshire breweries with Copper Dragons Black Gold from Skipton always on when I visit, the luck of the mild drinker!

Food is good value with the chicken & steak pies particulary well filled, freshly cooked, we four had a 25 min wait with dining area 25% full, proper chips too!

If you eat inside you have the bonus of the best views & a respite from inclement weather, highchairs available, they advertise themselves as"sprog & dog" friendly.

Outside there are more benches on a lower level behind pub.

They have added a smokers roof to the right of the entrance & a small conservatory to the left since my last visit, as sign of its increasing popularity.

Sea Life Centre & minature railway are just across the road, look out for the white wigwams.

For those who don't fancy the 3.5 mile stroll we did, the No. 3A EYMS (Scarborough & District) has its terminus right outside, no Sunday service but 25 mins to the hour until early evening Monday to Saturday 1.45 single journey.

I know its a cliche, but who wouldn't want a boozer like this around the corner from them?
