Great pub, especially on Sunday evenings when they have a really fun stand-up comedy night. Highly recommended.

Great comedy nights here - Banana Cabaret is a legend and the long-running Tuesday open mic night is of high quality too.

It's now called "Amuse Bouche" and calls itself a "champagne bar", which should tell you all you need to know.

It was bad as The Litten Tree, but as a Walkabout it is beyond dire. However, there can be good stand-up comedy shows in the basement on Thusrday and Staurday nights.

The Boot and Slipper, Amersham
A bit fake, especially the silly hipped roof on the new olde worlde extension, but the food is not bad.

Great atmosphere, decor and history. Let down somewhat by poor service, mediocre food and coffee. Still worth a visit.

The S&M scene here used to be much hotter. Young peopel these days have so little imagination.

The food here isn't cheap, but the quality is high. The refurb has been nicely judged. Well worth a visit.

That rare thing, a refurbished pub that is better than what went before. Well worth a visit.

Good place to take a posh date or social climber. Used to be better, but still decent.

Another Fulham place whose popularity I can't understand. Pretentious and expensive. Food is pretty poor for the price.

The Fest - Octoberfest Pub, Fulham
What an awful place. Even worse than the Oktoberfest itself. More Aussie than German. Overpriced. Dirty. Avoid.

The Hillgate, Notting Hill Gate
Was a decent pub when I lived here ten years ago. Now quite poor. Churchill, Windsor Castle and Uxbridge are all much better choices.

All Bar One, Notting Hill Gate
Lots of great pubs hidden away down the side streets here - don't waste your time and money in this dull dump.

The Windsor Castle, Kensington
Still a great pub for a quiet romantic drink in the winter or with friends in the beer garden in the summer. Food is nothing special and expensive.

The Churchill Arms, Kensington
Was my local ten years ago. It's hardly changed since, thankfully, as it's a great pub - decent food, reasonable prices, interesting decor, great staff and a varied crowd of locals and visitors. And I've pulled loads here too!

Another disappointing Putney pub. Goodish beer garden, but that's it. Why does Putney have so many poor pubs?

Good pub and great spot for a gig. Much better than the typical Putney chain pub.
26 Sep 2005 13:03
Great pub, with two interesting and contrasting rooms and nice space outside. A bit expensive, but I have lots of cash, so why should I care?
26 Sep 2005 13:01
Could be great, but is quite mediocre. The DUkes Head next door is much better.
26 Sep 2005 12:58
Looks great, but is really quite dire. Youngs pubs are normally the best of any chain, but this one is pretty dreadful. Toilet attendants should be banned!
26 Sep 2005 12:56
Not too bad for Putney, where the standards are quite low!
26 Sep 2005 12:54
Great comedy nights downstairs on a Thursday and Saturday, otherwise best avoided.
26 Sep 2005 12:53
Not as bad as The Larrik opposite, but still pretty dire, unless there is a big sports event on. Otherwise, utterly soulless. Cheap food, but you would have to be drunk to want to eat it.

The Golden Lion, Putney Bridge
Doesn't look much from the outside, but a really interesting locals' pub with a decent garden too. Cheap beer (from 1.80) and wine (from 5.00 a bottle). Very good for Fulham.

Not as bad as it might be, but still pretty bad. Either yuppies or Antipodeans, with very expensive drinks and mediocre food. When it's crowded, service is a problem, and when it's not, completely soulless. Disgusting toilets.
26 Sep 2005 12:49
Used to be a good rock venue, now a sleazy smally dump full of Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans. If you're Antipodean, you might enjoy it, otherwise avoid like the plague.

The White Horse, Parsons Green
Used to be much better, but still very entertaining if you want to watch Sloanes at play. Apart from the sociological interest, the food is very good if expensive and the beer selection excellent and also expensive. One finds it surprisingly amusing.
26 Sep 2005 12:42
Sort of bar you will love or hate. Sloanes love it. Chavs hate it. Rather pricey too.

The Biddle Bros, Lower Clapton
Great local bar and quite a surprise for "murder mile". Curiously, it is almost entirely white, without having to have a black guy on the door to turn away other black guys. Very odd.

The Pub on the Park, London Fields
Still good, but used to be much better. Can't understand why people buy lager in plastic glasses to drink on the grass in the park - the off licence is much quicker and cheaper!
26 Sep 2005 12:32
Best 'spoons I've ever been too. Amazing range of clientele and well-kept cheap beer. Interesting decor and superlative loos. Well worth a look!
26 Sep 2005 12:30
Nothing really like it in the area, but elsewhere it would be nothing special. Surprised to still see that it is in business - it really never gets very busy.

The King and Castle, Windsor
Excellent free stand-up comedy night on Sundays, with really good quality acts. Nice pub too.
