North Nineteen, Holloway

This is the perfect local.
Landlord keen to make relationships with regulars, without being intrusive.
An incredibly cooked and very well made menu (most things under 10).
A wide range of wines, ales AND ciders (the really cloudy Somerset stuff particularly good).
A fireplace, regular football put on quietly at weekends, friendly punters.
As locals go, this ticks all the boxes, I just pray it doesn't go out of business, the way of some other small locals...

The St Johns Tavern, Archway

Good atmosphere, good food, good drinks selection (particularly strong wine list).

The Barley Mow, Englefield Green

This is one of those pubs that seems to change with the weather.
On a sunny day, for some thirsty beer drinkers, this is one of the nicest pubs for miles around to spend a couple of hours relaxing and talking. I can't speak for the food, but service has massively improved (fast staff turnover) and I recommend it heartily.

The John O'Gaunt Inn, Hungerford

Incredibly nice staff. Good choice of ale. Friendly dog.
Can't fault it.

The Halfway Inn, Newbury

New management.
New style of bar.

Now strong emphasis on a good menu. Nice restaurant area. Piano player in the corner. Maintains a very nice beer garden for beer drinkers, always a good local lager on tap (rare).

I love it, well worth checking out.

The York, Islington

Ludicrously well priced house wine.
A rare bargain of a pub for the area.

The Queen Boadicea, Clerkenwell

A great bar/pub. Awesome cocktail selection. Well priced (kind of upper-middle pricing-7 for a Martini, 3.30 for a pint) and a good atmosphere. Inside is deliberately low-lit, giving quite a serious atmosphere if you are just there for a coffee. It's probably ideal for a first date, certainly a strong menu following a refurb. It remains one of my favourites, and worth going out of the way for.

The Old Ticket Hall, Windsor

New management. It's been refurbished, the manager's are great, the live music has got better and better and it's well worth heading down there. Sunday's are normally a highlight for music.

Channings, Clifton

I liked it a lot. Comfortable and welcoming. Just try not to be too disgruntled when they're still serving people after time at the bar and not you. Hotel guests aren't tied down by the rules apparently!

18 Feb 2008 15:54

Roo Bar, Clifton

Friendly staff, often too busy for a quiet pint.
Very much a student hangout when there's no sport on. It is a damn good atmosphere even for the smallest league game, although trying to even get in the door for the Rugby World Cup Quarters was impossible!

Jude The Obscure, Oxford

Not a scratch on their neighbours, the Tavern.
No real environment, lots of shiny things.
Beer's fine.

Jericho, Oxford

It's not that expensive, for Oxford, and it's a fantastically nice environment to spend an evening in. I'm not sure calling it 'trendy' is fair! It's just a nice pub with a little-above-average pint prices. I'm a massive fan.

The Jekyll and Hyde, Edinburgh

Wonderfully strange little place.
I adored finding the secret toilets while by friends had to go all the way downstairs each time they needed a whizz. Not just for heavy metal fans, it's dark but it's got charisma.

The Shakespeare's Head, Holborn

For a Wetherspoon's it's quite nice. Lively buzzing atmosphere after work, and right by the tube station, which is always a bonus.

The Duke of Connaught, Windsor

Great live music on a Monday night. Nice pub, good set up. No complaints!

12 Nov 2006 21:38

The Hand and Flowers, Maidenhead

Fab music on a Tuesday and a Sunday night, and friendly bar staff (newly changed).

The King and Castle, Windsor

Okay prices for Windsor, massive place, nicely refurbished. I worry about when it will be completely overrun by the Windlesora (spelling?!) crowd. Four fat topless blokes sauntered into the bar when I was there. The place smelt a little, and the bar staff were complaining about not liking their boss. It didn't give the best impression. A friend of mine, who's 23, was asked to leave as he didn't have ID, and they refused to believe that a massive beard required being over 18. Shame. It's okay, but needs to sort its clientele and employee attitude.

The Malvern Hills Hotel, Great Malvern

Nice place, idyllic setting, nice beer garden, well priced. Worth a visit even if not staying in the hotel.

The Carpenters Arms, Windsor

I'd like to revoke what I said previously. I think my prejudice about being asked for ID in a rude way got in the way of a sensible rating for this pub. It is lovely, and the drinks seem flawless-good wine selection.

The Punch And Judy, Covent Garden

I liked it (controversial, i know!) nice atmosphere in that you can pick balcony or dingy pub cellar, but I liked the set-up, and I liked the barmen.
Do avoid when busy though.
otherwise, fine.

The Tron Tavern, Edinburgh

Great place, especially on a yellow card! Underground and lovely in that it's out of the way. Not too many tourists I found, and enough students without being clogging.

24 May 2006 11:04

The Turl, Oxford

Nice and generally quiet little place, average pints (price and quality), surly staff, but peak times I can understand a little surliness...try it.

24 May 2006 11:02

The Golden Bee, Stratford Upon Avon

It's a Wetherspoons, but the best Wetherspoons I've been to. Instant service, customary cheap drinks. Perfect.

22 May 2006 12:10

The Lazy Cow, Stratford Upon Avon

Amazing place!

22 May 2006 12:09

Havana, Windsor

Late night this place is great. Good music, my mate played an acoustic set here and loved it. Does have some strange low points, where the atmosphere is rubbish and some staff seem rude.

22 May 2006 12:05

Vanilla Bar, Windsor

It's a snooty pile of middle class pretention. Don't go here. Go further down the hill and pick any other bar/club. Why have pink and fluffy when you can have fun?

22 May 2006 12:04

The Bar Cafe, Windsor

Agree with the no atmosphere comments, very cheap drinks though. Lots of miniskirts, especialy on fat people. Not a nice crowd normally. Good place if feeling cheap, otherwise, find a real pub.

22 May 2006 12:03

The Red Lion, Oxford

Horrible crowd, horrible bar staff, horribly dirty. Only drink here if you're desperate for cheap drinks (2 pints and 2 spirit doubles and mixers), otherwise go somewhere nice.

22 May 2006 11:53

The Three Tuns, Windsor

Rude staff. Especially the lady.
With other pubs close by it's easy to miss this one out.

22 May 2006 11:50

The Fox and Hounds Restaurant & Bar, Englefield Green

Lovely pub, right by the Great Park. Go on a sunny day with a spouse and sit outside and bask in the glory of it all.

22 May 2006 11:48

The Barley Mow, Englefield Green

Nice place, great location, rude staff.

22 May 2006 11:47

Bells Of Ouseley, Old Windsor

Harvester, back in its day it was lovely.
Not quite so now!

22 May 2006 11:46

The Two Brewers, Windsor

It's great.
Go there.

22 May 2006 11:45

The Grapes, Oxford

Old mans pub. Nice. Smoky. Long and thin. Last time I was there I spent the evening drinking Courvoisier with Amanda Barrie (formally of Coronation St.), it's often full of people from New Theatre just across the way. Great place. Big fan.

22 May 2006 11:01

The Kings Arms, Oxford

Great mix of people, lots of musicy types who come in having just finished concerts talking away about who played the best! Cheap pints, great place.

22 May 2006 10:54

The Dew Drop Inn, Oxford

It's a nice pub, moody landlord, cheap drinks, good food, smoky atmosphere and football always on.

22 May 2006 10:45

The Old School, Oxford

It's a great pub, stunning entrance room, kind of 'mock castle' but not cheesy, in fact god knows when it was built as it feels really authentic! Often filled with the young, but still a lovely pub, they do the most incredible cheesy chips!

5 Jan 2006 16:25

The Horse and Groom, Windsor

Brilliant pub! Nice atmosphere, but as others say it is expensive. Usually filled with Lay Clerks from the Castle after 7pm! Only adds to its lovely charm though, having some young locals! Prices are scary, but I still frequent this pub.

5 Jan 2006 16:18

The Carpenters Arms, Windsor

They seem to revel in only accepting passports from those 'Under 21', which is slightly annoying as so many more ID's should be accepted, but whatever! It's a nice pub, nice bar set-up, just don't ask for a top on your lager, they frown and don't get you. I forget which country the bar staff are from.

5 Jan 2006 16:14

Dog & Partridge, Sunninghill

What a beautiful pub! It's my favourite, I love it. Wood floors, open-plan, standard prices, nice people, lovely staff, not-too-old, not-too-young. Perfect.

5 Jan 2006 16:08

The Carpenters Arms, Sunninghill

A very, very solid pub. All the amenities you'd want, with a large Sky tv, and a small one in the corner if you want to watch something else! Nice staff, hilarious locals (arguing about whether water expands when it freezes for 2 hrs) and a lovely 2-sided bar set-up. I'm a big fan.
