Towan Blystra, Newquay

Avoid in the summer when it is taken over by the stag and hen crowd (quite disconcerting seeing the older generation trying to enjoy their meals and then seeing a couple of stag and hen parties coming in and "boat racing" jugs of cocktails). Also, the music tends to crank up fairly early on. Another pub tempting the the younger crowd for drinks whilst at the same time enticing diners - not always a good mix! Fine outside the main season though and the themed nights are very good.

The Olive Branch, Barnstaple

A pub dominated by the young crowd in the evening in the very rowdy town of Barnstaple - what is it about these country market towns on a Saturday night, it was like Dodge City!! However... it was clean and well maintained, the food was of a very high standard and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. I would definitely recommend this pub.

The Talbot Inn, Eynsham

The food is of excellent quality and plenty of it. The staff are friendly and the beer is well kept.

The Old Albion, Crantock

Could be a really nice pub given the location and the building. Not at all welcoming and the food is of the frozen microwave variety. Not recommended.

Steam, Newquay

The bar has been nicely refurbished and the food is improving after a poor start. The outside terrace on the cliff top is lovely and the views fantastic. Shame the music has to be so loud outside though. It's supposed to be suitable for families and older people, not the usual Newquay stag type crowd. However, when I was there the music was so loud you could hardly engage in conversation and several other groups looked really unhappy and ready to move on. The 2 stag parties enjoyed it though and were in fine voice! Perhaps this is what the pub is ultimately aiming for.
