The Jack Fairman, Horley

The food here is awful. Gammon undercooked with soggy chips and cold eggs. The recooked meal was just as bad with hard cold eggs. You will find sticky tables, so mind where you put your elbows..

Excellent. Food and service is the best in the area. So pleased this place has taken a turn for the better since the refurbishment of Christmas 2009/2010. I'm looking forward to trying the bedrooms and patio area when it opens in June/July. Closing early May for new toilets/kitchens/bedrooms/patio area to be built.

This pub is currently undergoing refurbishment. It has also been renamed 'The Richard Onslow'. First impressions are good from the outside.

Chapchap27,

Thank you for your comments.

Maybe you could learn from the good service i have found in some locations and pass it on to those you seem to love.

We called here as we were passing through and had some extra time.

Unfortunately, the impression was terrible and not welcoming.

The food is dreadful and the beer is far from kept well. The location is also dirty and cluttered.

Which in 'simple' terms means less custom.

Try a bombadier, IPA or a London pride at the Farnham Slug.

They have great table service there in clean and welcoming surroundings.

I have not been here in 2 years since the Irish woman was running it. The food then was alright at first and then went down hill. Having driven past most weeks, i noticed a sign saying Under New Management. I though i would give it another chance. Don't bother driving there, the car park was dirty and a hazard with junk strewn all around. I should have realised that first impressions really do count. It was wall to wall with blue and purple rinses inside. The interior was exactly the same as 2 years ago and still nicotine stained. There was even the same sofa in the alcove. They have closed the dining area off so you can only eat in the bar area. They have moved the hotplate in next to the bar. The food was dried up and over cooked. No wonder the only clientele were O.A.Ps. They have no taste buds left. The cauliflower cheese was a mush which obviously helps people with false teeth. The beef was the cheap cut that the previous people started to sell. The man serving the meat also served the roast potatoes. I was given only 4 small roast potatoes. What sort of carvery is this?(7.95) I wanted a pint of London Pride, they ran out as it was being poured. The barrel was changed and i was then served a pint with 10% cleaning fluid. Another customer didn't even get that and walked out after realising how poor the meals were. The man serving the food snatch the plate and said he would not see them in there again. They left their meals and drinks without paying. Our desserts were definitely not home made and were over priced for what can only be described as child portions for 3.75! The service is terrible along with the food. Maybe one day i will return with my parents again to see if it improves. Though i doubt it.

We didn't even get a hello when we got to the bar. This pub is stuck in the past. The 'home made' pies are not home made. The 'butchers choice' burgers are nothing more than frozen birds eye. It seems the credit crunch has arrived. The ales were plenty though my Best tasted as though it was close to rejection. They don't accept debit cards and the nearest cash point is a 7 mile round trip. The locals just stared at us as if we were from outer space. The volume dropped as we went in. My wife felt very uncomfortable. Finally, 6:45 for a pint and a coke set in a dusty cluttered bar and the barman tried to short change me 10. Avoid.

The Nelson, Farnham

I went here on Saturday with my 8 year old son. I asked if they were serving food and if there was table service. I was told yes to both questions. We sat down and we were asked what we wanted to drink. My son asked for a lemonade and i asked for a pint of T.E.A. Our drinks arrived, I had a pint of T.E.A. and my son was given a pint of IPA!!! I said we were celebrating my birthday and we were after a dessert. We were given 3 different menus to choose from. The staff didn't even know what food was available as our choices were not available. The staff member then advised us to co to Cafe Rouge.

Plough, Farnham

This pub is clean and serves good beer. They do home made food which is on the whole good. Unfortunately, the beef is the lowest quality for the roasts and will leave you chewing for the next 3 days. The gravy is home made also. Just to much flour is used though. The best bit about this pub is the games you can take the family in to play while supping your way through the ales.

All Bar One, Guildford

Initially, it looks good. After a win in a long running Court battle, we relaxed for lunch with champagne. I had read the reviews and expected the worse. The food was excellent. The service could not be faulted. The interior was modern and stylish. Unfortunately, the toilets were a total disgrace. If i had been to the toilets before i had eaten, i would have left without eating. They promote British food and the staff member said they were proud of where the ingredients came from. I then asked about the chicken as it never mentioned where the chicken came from on the menu. I was then told the chicken came from Poland, like the chef!

The Swan, Ash Vale

We had a meal here last night with friends. The orders were placed and a staff member came to the table to check the order. We pointed out that one of the meals was wrong. This was acknowledged by the staff member and our cutlery was placed on the table. Our meals all arrived together and the meal was still wrong. It took 20 minutes for the correct meal to be replaced. The offer of a refund and free desserts was good but, getting it right the first and second time would have been better. The vegetarian moussaka was dreadful and looked as though it had been cooking for days!

The Waterwitch, Odiham

Hantstoryteller, you state you 'tried' to go here on the Sunday and then stated you did in fact go! You put a review in on Sunday 8th, which only had personal remarks with no mention of a visit. On the 11th you make more personal remarks with now the added story of a visit on the 8th!

One point i need to make, most of my visits have been on a weekday. The place has been nearly empty every time. This is no reason for the bad food and service i have received.
If you think it is acceptable to wait 1 hour and 20 minutes for your meal after you arrive, you need to get out more and try other venues. I offered to take my wife here the other night so i could give the location another chance, she refused to go because of the regular bad food and service we have had!!!
It's not just a case of 'agree to disagree', it's more a case that the majority expect higher standards of food and service for family, friends and clients.

The Slug and Lettuce, Farnham

I spent a wonderful Sunday afternoon enjoying T.E.A. and good food with my family. The staff here pamper to your every need! My glass was never empty. We asked for extra bread with the starter and extra roast potatoes with the mains. They even gave my son extra gravy. The dining experience here is truly exceptional. To top it all, the desserts are heavenly and you can't beat buy one get one free! Well done to the management for the staff and the cleanliness of the place throughout. We love bringing family and friends to be spoilt by your hospitality.

This is a nice stylish place to eat. The food quality is high and the price is also. Good selection of beer and a nice crowd on a friday night. Good service.

The Waterwitch, Odiham

HantsOLDgirl, it's a shame you admit to not being so bright. As you reply every night so late maybe in fact your the one who is 'sozzled', which would explain why your judgement is clouded. Do you eat for free at your clients expense? That's the only reason you must eat there as any sane person with a 'successful business' wouldn't waste their money there. Personally, this dive prevents me taking any family and friends. In fact i only go if i have a voucher as the food is of such poor quality. I have blogged all over the internet about the Waterwitch's failings as the customer service/food has been so bad. I have always tried to reach a reasonable outcome and always do elsewhere if i have a problem. Please remember, you are the minority!
You may reply...

The Waterwitch, Odiham

I have a life thank you and i drive every time i visit which ensures i have the best judgement. If you look at the reviews, you are 'the' minority! Your little rant just proves that you are in fact the landlady. Such a shame...

The Waterwitch, Odiham

How strange that 'hampshiregal' has only ever posted 2 reviews and both have been after i have left bad reviews for this location. How strange the last was done with speed just in time for the bank holiday. How strange also that your review is not backed up with any other review on your profile.
This is a nasty Chef and Brewer and it lets the Chef and Brewer name down. I have reviewed many places and this has to be one of the best looking but one of the worst for food and service.

7 Jun 2008 18:42

The Waterwitch, Odiham

This is still a Chef and Brewer with the same 'Great' menu.(Priestleysj open your eyes) It seems the staff have changed but the food quality hasn't. Twice my wifes steak was returned and twice a new one was over cooked. There was no red in the meat. "Tough as old boots" were her words. The service was terrible, there was no table service. I had to return to the bar to ask for mustard and mayonaise. I also had to remind them we had ordered garlic bread which failed to appear. The waiting staff are the worse i have come across in this country. You only get one mushroom with a mixed grill!! There was also a massive amount of fat on the gammon. Terrible terrible food...

Slug and Lettuce, Guildford

It's strange how one Slug and be so different to another Slug. I took my wife here. Comments about staff socialising with each other are true. The worse thing of all...THEY DON'T SELL BITTER... I will not return to this Slug. Godalming has the nearest Slug from here. Same food, same prices but they serve bitter and the provide great table service. Someone let me know when the management have been changed. Because at the moment, it's more like a work colleagues social bar.

Yates's, Oxford

22-12-07. Yes this is a Slug now. But it's probably the worse Slug in the UK. Sign on the door stated open at 12noon as staff problems. So i had to get the famous Slug breakfast elsewhere. The doors opened at 1205. The table service was terribly slow. The place was less than a quarter full. There wasn't even toilet paper in the male or female toilets. Both were dirty. I asked for bitter and i was told they had none. Because of Christmas, this would mean at least 5 days without bitter. The Mezze platter was good. Change the management please... I might return...

Cock & Camel, Oxford

Went here brunch. Bombardier ordered at the bar and sat down to wait. Orange juice arrived for wife and then i was told the Bombardier was off. So i was given Young's. After tasting this i discovered it resembled vinegar so i returned it to the bar. One bar man tasted it and agreed. The second also agreed and then noticed i shouldn't have been served as it was 10:45am. I was given a refund and a free cup of tea to go with my breakfast. The tea arrived at the table. Sporting a new look short hair on the saucer. (God my day was going from bad to worse, all this after finding the Slug and Lettuce closed further down the road.) 10 minutes later my food arrived. My baked beans looked old and reheated several times. This i didn't mind so much, as i had asked for no baked beans! I took my plate to the bar and pointed this mistake out. I then asked for a refund and watched my wife swim in the oil that her breakfast omelette was soaked in. I'm sure the food passes if you are drunk late at night. Don't eat here. You have been warned.

The Slug and Lettuce, Farnham

I took my wife and son here for lunch last saturday. The service and food were excellent.
This place has changed so much for the better since the smoking and sport shirt ban. You now get a higher grade customer. I was totally amazed at the childrens food. Not a value sausage in site!! The toilets were immaculate. Well done to the management.

The Boatman, Guildford

Nice place to take the inlaws when they visit. Excellent setting by the river. It's even better when it's not packed full. We managed to sit outside inbetween thunder storms. No crowds. Beer is good. Food is excellent and not processed. You can watch it being cooked. Drinks and food are over priced so it's 'Chav' free.

7 Jul 2007 15:58

Jack George Phillips, Godalming

Went in here for a drink after a lovely meal next door in the Slug and Lettuce. The service here is terrible. I stood at the bar for over 2 minutes before one of the staff said whos next. Half the staff were stood chatting at one end. I even made eye contact with 2 of them and still no service. The place wasn't even busy and under half full. It's very cheap and attracts 'BARGAIN' people. Vicky Pollard types can be found stood outside the door waiting for Joe'Chav'Bloggs to invite them in for a 99p drink.

The Slug and Lettuce, Godalming

The wife and i enjoy the table service here. It looks like they have a new chef. Food before had been bad. It was brilliant last night. The tiger prawns were cooked to perfection and juicy. The rest of the meal was to the same high standard. The Johns Smiths tasted better because it was served to my leather sofa. I will return to cuddle up, drink and watch the world go by.

7 Jul 2007 15:22

The Marlborough Head, Farnham

Had a meal here the other day. Staff are very friendly and well trained. Brilliant value for money meals. John Smiths was refreshing as was the Pedigree. The place has changed for the better since the smoking ban. I'm a smoker and it was lovely to sit down in a smoke free pub to eat. The garden is a good size with plenty of tables with huge rain/sun parasols. I'm looking forward to the august bank holiday with the family here.

7 Jul 2007 15:02

The Waterwitch, Odiham

Having seen the anonymous (landlord/landlady/family)entry, i have to let you all know about my recent visit here.I took my wife here for a meal. The landlady is ignorant and looked for others to serve rather than stop talking and do the job herself. My beer batter was soaked in oil and flat. The 7 chips were ok and well drained. Our sleeves stuck to the tables. The food here used to be good value for money in comfortable surroundings. Now it's poor value for money in sticky surroundings. The desserts are bought in and taste processed.(Look at how much cream you get.) The service is erractic and often poor. This is a good example of a good pub being driven into the ground by lazy residents. Lets hope the brewery change before the 'chavs' move in.

25 Jun 2007 11:36

The Old Bell, Grazeley Green

I took my family here on saturday night. The owners need to sort out the tab situation. Retain car keys (or credit/debit card or small child...) on arrival? Otherwise, after queuing to pay for order, service was fantastic. Good selection of beer. Food was excellent & pub was full of families with children. Fantastic location with good parking. Starters, main & dessert all served quickly. Very important when you have a hungry 6 year old & he had the adult lasagne!

27 Feb 2007 16:14

The Nelson, Farnham

I took my son & wife here for lunch. Under cooked burgers are not a good thing. The owner started to swear at me when i complained about the uncooked meat. Advoid at all costs. The service was fantastic though.

24 Aug 2006 10:34

The Royal Anchor, Liphook

Dirty pub, terrible service & terrible food.

24 Aug 2006 10:22

The Plough and Horses, Cove

Had a meal here this week. Salmon was excellent. Chocolate fudge cake served hot with ice cream was excellent. Waggledance bitter made with honey was different! Service was wonderful. Pub needs a refurb to brighten the interior. Table service from the garden for food & drinks was excellent. Small garden with no play area for children. Good looking pub with friendly staff.

(Inbreeds can be found at the bar smoking & letching at all women. Women find this off putting.)

26 Jul 2006 20:25

The Surrey, St Johns

Ok pub. Next to busy road full of boy racers. AVOID the food here. I sent my steak back to be cooked. It came back untouched! God only knows where the staff have been beamed down from.

18 Jul 2006 16:55

The Slug and Lettuce, Farnham

I've been here a couple of times at night. It gets too packed for enjoyment. The best time is late afternoon. Empty with table service. Sit, drink & watch the world drive by. Food is your normal processed & deep fried. But always tastes better after a few pints. Service can be rather slow. 35 minute wait after starters finished.

11 Jul 2006 10:21

The Richard Onslow, Cranleigh

I've been to this pub several times in the last year. I agree with teedoubleyou. It's a dirty pub with terrible food. If you don't trust me, check this out. In the "lounge" bar area, there is a pew infront of a window near the fireplace. There has been the same bit of rubbish since i first went there. I'm getting rather fond of that bit of rubbish now. It's like visiting an old friend. Check the condiments before use! Date & bits stuck to them. A visit here will make the next pub you visit the best in the world.

11 Jul 2006 10:13

The Swan Hotel, Alton

I read the reviews before i went. This is a nice place with decent good food. The smoked duck starter is fantastic. High class food at a cheap budget.
Beer was ok. IPA was off so had to settle for Abbots. I wasn't impressed with a local in football kit & flip flops shouting out the window at passers by. Nor impressed with a "Woman of the Night" working the tables. We watched her go from table to table getting free drinks by charm. The rear view was so off putting that we ate in the restaurant.
