The Barley Mow, Shoreditch

Friendly little boozer for the area serving good drinks. Was pretty full although judging from the some of the clientele I got the impression it was that they were waiting for queues to die down elsewhere or were not on guestlists. Atmosphere on the whole was good with seating available later on as things quietened down. I also get the impression be a nice place for a daytime drink.

Couple of ales on and the odd drink or two I had not seen before on tap as well. Opted for Leffe blonde which is a treat. Prices were good for the area. Biggest moan and I know that this is not the fault of the pub that if you go outside of this pub like my friend did for a fag you will get hassled for spare change every 2-3 minutes which is offputting. Overall though if you find yourself in the area it is a recommend from me at least.

Nelson's Retreat, Old Street

Bit of an enigma this pub. Situated right next to Old Street but thankfully it hasn't succumbed to the changing of some bars in the neighbourhood taking place round there these days. That said it could do with a bit of a refurb in that in looks straight out of the 80s in terms of look and could be a bit fresher Think it does see itself as a local pub & if I honest I had a good time whilst there and the atmosphere was friendly. Had lagers and they were ok with staff pleasant rather than friendly. If nothing else made from a change from the general uppity feel that some places in Shoreditch & Hoxton carry these days

The Dogstar, Brixton

Was in here for pre gig drinks before venturing to the Academy. Staff pleasant drinks fine. It was a good way to start the night out. Was generally quiet with a mixed clientele I could imagine that it gets pretty busy later on but didn't venture back so cant be sure. That said I would recommend it early on at least particularly before a gig

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street

Dropped by here recently after doing a walk around the city and surrounds in a group. Good little Samuel Smiths bar. Well staffed, pleasant friendly with an Aussie bloke who was only too willing to top up our drink. Spit & sawdust in one of the bars. Was told its pretty much one of the oldest pubs in London. Good for history buffs & those wanting a cheap bitter.

The Angel in the Fields, Bond Street

Great little pub on the Marylebone High St. The Irish guys that run it are friendly and welcoming always & that attitude comes through on the staff who are only too keen to serve a pint. Sam Smiths pub so of course prices are on the cheap which is a bonus. As someone said earlier just enough from the bustle of the West End but a busy after work boozer around 5. Can play darts there as well which I enjoyed.

The Pride of Spitalfields, Shoreditch

This pub is a little gem. Virtually untouched by the goings on in Brick Lane. Retains the feel of an East End boozer mixing in an eclectic crowd of punters. Service good beers good. Can't ask for more than that. Recommended

The Snooty Fox, Canonbury

I really like this place. Got a great feel about it. Never too overcrowded either. The retro jukebox is a treat with a few really choice tunes. The staff are always helpful & the beers cold which is a plus. Have never tried the food but have been told by one or two its good nosh. Highly recommended

The Sir Richard Steele, Belsize Park

Used to really like this place but since the takeover a severe disappointment. Prices are now expensive and one of the things which made it something, the locals have left in droves as have many of the old staff which says a lot. There is one woman behind the bar, didn't get her name but was told she was South American that seems to take great delight in being abusive to the punters which puts me right off it. Pity as it was a good pub at one time

The Champion, Fitzrovia

A great little pub tucked away from the crowds in Oxford St. Love the look of the place with the stain glass windows. They make for a good read and add to its overall appeal. Its a Sam Smiths so prices are good. As is service. Gent behind the bar was friendly and attentive & pints went down well. Definitely recommend this place to anyone

The Village, Muswell Hill

This pub is ok at best. The pizzas are really good & the look of the place is spacious and clean. Got a nice area in the front i & it is great if you can get one of the tables in summer time. Beers ok standard fare. Agree with previous posters on the weekend crowds and the lack of a pub feel. Service was good though

The Pembroke Castle, Primrose Hill

Interesting pub. Great food. Service was lovely. Fantastic German girl looked after us well with cool pints & a smile. Met the manager he was a bit awkward to be honest but overall a good pub.

Ordnance Arms, St John's Wood

Great place. Jeff the landlord is a cracking guy as is the staff he employs. Nothing seems to much trouble & considering the area prices are brilliant. Quiet & as is the Samuel Smiths way no music but highly recommended for the atmosphere & general feel of the place. 5 stars

Ye Olde Swiss Cottage, Swiss Cottage

This place could be great. Got so much potential but they have recently got new management in there who appear to be very weak. There is one barstaff guy called Madje with a bald head who makes a great habit of shouting at customers, treating them very poorly & generally making sure he drives all customers out where possible. Worst of all when not working he does the same as a punter almost with management approval it seems as he drinks with them as he is doing it. In addition they ring the bell 5 minutes early & refuse to serve from 10.55 on.Its a great shame as I like the bar but after seeing people treated so poorly I cannot recommend this place. The pity is prices are great, as is the garden & the locals are fun to chat to. Will definitely return if the staff & management get sorted
