The Old Ship, Mere

Now under new management. They have done a lot to improve the look of the pub for the better. New management dont have experience of running a pub but are keen so give it a go; so give it a try!

The Fox and Goose, Coombe Bisset

Lovelly location overlooking mill pond in a pretty village.
VERY helpful friendly staff, good food, good beer.
But interior is very 1950s so not a cosy village pub. Recommended for a group wishing to eat out; but maybe not for a romantic couple

The Queen Victoria Inn, Priddy

Went to lunch yesterday. What a find! The english country pub we all dream of!
Good food and excellent beer. Recommend the Priddy ham.
Very friendly staff and locals (at least on a Wednesday when the previous landlandy runs the bar - can speak for other days).
Bags of oldy-worldy atmosphere too. CAMRA recommended 2012 but dont believe the 'Free House' sign outside - its a Butcombe pub.

The Bell Inn, Wylye

Beautiful 15c pub in a picturesque village in the lovely Wylye valley.
The pub has an atmospheric interior and seating in the garden (poor) and front (good for watching the village go by).
Is a owned by a pubco, not tied to a brewery, so good choice of beers. The food is pub grub - sandwiches, toasties and baked pots - so nothing special at not special prices.
Unfortunately it does not have a dedicated landlord; just a string of temporary managers - please someone take on this lovely pub - it could be made something really special.

The Butt of Sherry, Mere

Very popular with local gents with dogs (lots; have they told their wives that they are taking the dog out for a long walk?).
The juke box can make conversation difficult (don't understand how that goes with the 'dog-walkers'?); so not a quiet country pub.
Basic pub grub at reasonable prices. Good and well kept beers.
Good if you appreciate old-fashioned boozer pubs. People who are not keen on too many dogs or juke boxes might prefer the George in the centre of Mere.

The Robin Hood, Shripney

Excellent for birthday etc celebrations. Good beer and interesting food; all at good prices. Roaring fire even at lunchtime. Pleasant helpful staff. Lovely old interior with plenty of atmosphere. Did not try the accommodation but the accommodation block looked rather run down to me.

The Nog Inn, Wincanton

We were shopping in Wincanton today so popped in for our first visit. Good choice of beers, including many continental, excellent food and friendly helpful staff. Being a Saturday it was pretty full. Mostly local people of all ages. Great atmosphere. Highly recommended.

The Lamb Inn, Hindon

I love this pub for its oldie-worldly ambience, interesting clientel and friendly staff. Can really relax with a drink here.
But the food - oh dear! I have had to send back my last three meals. One haggis contained sharp bits of bone that broke my tooth; one goose dish turned out to be a scrawny neck of a goose in one long piece - so tough I could not cut it. My wife's stuffed pepper was swimming in so much balsamic vinegar that she nearly choked. Last week four of us ate; the pork dish was mashed pork and stuffing (looked to me like Sunday lunch leftovers) with plain mashed potato. It was so dry that, although my companion managed to struggle through it, I could not. The ladies had the chicken dish which turned out to be a piece of roast chicken on plain mashed potatoes - no discernable sauce and no vegetables. Average price of these very basic dishes about 12!
To add insult to injury they charged a compulsory 10% service.
Advice: go for the lovely old pub and good beers: ignore the menu and order a bag of crisps followed by something from the excellent pudding menu.

The Masons Arms, Warminster

Superb pub in a town dominated by dives.
Excellent gravity-fed cask beers which are changed approx every couple of days.
Lovely old rambling rooms and reasonable outside seating.
Good food at reasonable prices.
Very helpful and friendly staff. Not a posh clientele but very friendly.
Haven't tried the Organ Inn yet but this could be the best pub in Warminster.

The Prince Leopold, Upton Lovell

The inside has gone upmarket - clean cream and pine at the expense of old-wordly atmosphere. Pleasant leather-sofa'd lounge area with fire.

The Dove Inn, Corton

The outside is still very old-wordly but the interior has been tastefully refurbished - it has gone upmarket.
Log fire, lots of little rooms, sunroom. Pleasant seating, good beers, friendly staff and attractive menu - if a little expensive (starters avg 7, puds average 5.50).
Pleasant orchard garden.
Worth strolling around the attractive village.

The Somerset Arms, Maiden Bradley

My wife and I went for a meal one cold winters evening. Restaurant was chilly and empty. The landlord explained that he had not lit the fire cos it cost him 10 a night and if he had no diners ....
Suggested we use the bar but since a large TV was blasting out we give it a miss.

The Walnut Tree, Mere

Nice clean light pleasantly-decorated pub with non smoking in most of the area.
Landlord couple have great energy and ideas so there is always a good reason to visit.
Food is quite good although little local influence or quality ingredients.
Recommend sitting outside on warm days and evenings; coffee and free newspapers in mornings.
Childrens play area.

Black Dog, Chilmark

Lovely atmosphere, Enthusiastic new couple; excellent food and restaurant areas. Rather pricy though.
