The Sun, Calbourne

Superb!

Visited the Sun for a pint prior to taking friends for a meal. What a delight!

Four different Real Ales listed PLUS a list of those which will be next served.

Very welcoming staff. The beer was very well kept at a perfect temperature.

Very nicely laid out pub, garden well kept.

But saving the best until last, the food was utterly superb.Between the four of us we all had different starters and main courses. All of us were delighted.

Prices were comparable with other local pubs but the food was restaurant standard.

Serving staff were quick, efficient and charming.

The new owners have done their homework and worked hard.

Buses to Freshwater and Newport run every hour, punctually.

We had a really great evening.

Forget the comments prior to 2009, this is a different place.

THANK YOU! We had a great time.

The Blacksmiths Arms, Newport

Wonderful welcome. Barmaid remembered my name two weeks later after first visit. Always busy but never cramped. Lovely log fires. Good well kept ales and a selection of some fine continental lagers including Warsteiner. That was a surprise! Food is excellent. Highly recommended.

The Three Bishops, Brighstone

Last guy must have been blind. The Three Bishops has 4 lagers on tap, plus Guiness and a lovely Pear Cider. And four real ales. Good selection of bottled beers. The community use this pub for meals over and over again. The food is excellent and the staff charming.

The Countryman, Brighstone

Owner just been fined by the magistrates for filling spirit bottles with cheaper alternatives. Watered down beer. Disgraceful! Nice though to drive past and see the police cars waiting either side, looking for drink-drivers. Carry on past to the Three Bishops!

The Spyglass Inn, Ventnor

Set in a fantastic location The Spyglass Inn was recommended to me by a friend. I don't talk to him anymore. The bar staff and kitchen staff are sulky and miserable. The four of us ordered food and it was really below average. Dry, overcooked and obviously from Iceland.(The shop not the country!) I cannot recommend the food at all. But if you want to watch the sea and enjoy a pint then do just that. Like many picturesque places it trades on its location and not its reputation. Stay away from the VAST family eating area and the dark and dingey pub interior. Enjoy the beer on the terrace and eat elsewhere. 5 out of 10 for the beer and the view.

The Eight Bells, Carisbrooke

Not a bad pub as such but very dated. In the 70's a pub like this would have been trendy. But the beer is very good and the food was ok. It really is a tourist pub and one especially for families. If you are on a tight budget and want a good meal for your money then this is pretty good. But it could do with a facelift. I gave it 6 out of 10.

The Flight Tavern, Lowfield Heath

Used to be a super place to have a pint. Now it is geared for meals, but these are of poor quality. Expect a lot of aircraft noise but not a lot of Aircraft in view.
