Good old-fashioned authentic pub atmosphere, with the restaurant area divided into lots of smaller rooms/alcoves. Service very good. The only beer I tried was Tribute, which was well kept. The food menu is a little dull, with a distinct lack of vegetarian dishes, but my rump steak was first-rate.

Very good and well-priced lunch menu. Pleasant atmosphere, and good service. Haven't tried it in the evening, but well worth stopping for at lunchtime.

Dropped in for an evening meal, which was well cooked and good value. Easy to find, lots of parking, and (as someone has already remarked) a stupendous view.

The Pineapple, Amersham Common
It is owned by Vintage Inns, with the usual faults and virtues, but it's more of a restaurant than most of their pubs. Seems to be popular, though.

Good mid-priced food at lunchtime (not in the evening, though). A good choice of real ales - last time I was here it was London Pride, Doombar and Landlord. Altogether much better than the score here might suggest.

Dropped in for lunch on the way back from holiday. A decent pint of Badger, and a good range of sandwiches. Worth a try if one is passing through.

Dropped in for lunch while passing through. Good pint of Landlord and excellent home-made pizzas. Friendly service and no music (good). Well worth a visit.

In the old part of the town, next to Ludlow's one remaining medieval gate. Had two evening meals here last week. Food good (an excellent steak), and good value, and beer OK, though only two (Marstons and Jennings) on draught. There is a dining area on one side, but we ate in the main bar, which has a good old-fashioned pub feel -- i.e. it hasn't been tarted up (yet). Busy on Saturday night, and the barman said that one should book at weekends.

The Bridge Hotel, Stanford Bridge
Dropped in for lunch last week. Friendly service behind the bar, a good pint and a very edible baguette.

This is one of four Vintage Inns pubs in this area, the others being the Firecrest (near Wendover), the Duck Inn (Aston Clinton) and the Bugle Horn (near Aylesbury), and in my view it's the best of them for atmosphere. The food isn't for gourmets, but as chain pub food goes it's not at all bad. The beer available at any given time varies, so any predictions are likely to be out of date, but there's usually something palatable.

Now shut. I never went there, but it sounds as though I didn't miss much.

The Bear and Ragged Staff, Stonymarsh
It feels like a (goodish) chain pub, though apparently it's part of chain of only two. On the basis of one (evening) visit only, I'd say that the food was quite good -- not gourmet stuff, but a fair rage and decent sized portions. The beer I tried (Landlord) was excellent.

Definitely a place for eating-and-drinking rather than just drinking, but the food is good (not cheap, but not vastly expensive either) and the beer is OK. Better for dinner than for lunchtime snacks. Pleasant ambience inside, and a large attractive garden.

Tried it for lunch today. Very middle-aged and middle class, but since that description applies to me too, I don't mind. The beer available was 6X, Adnams Bitter and Old Speckled Hen. The food is a bit pricey, though not extravagantly so. And no piped music (and no loudspeakers for it, either).

A splendid old-fashioned pub. A wide range of well-kept beer, good (and good value) lunchtime food (I haven't tried the main menu, but it looks promising). Long may it flourish.

Good beer and good atmosphere: a pleasant place to have a pint, or two, or three... Food (in my experience) rather ordinary -- not bad, but certainly not for gourmets.
19 Feb 2010 16:54
A good place to drink, with a warm, traditional pub interior: not at all scruffy, but not fake or tarted up. Beer fine if you like Adnams bitter (I do at lunch, but would prefer something stronger like Broadside in the evening). The food was OK but a bit ordinary: without become too "foody" (or too pricey) they need to raise their game a bit here.

The White Horse Inn, Badingham
Dropped in on the off-chance while driving past. Beer (Adnams) well kept. A decent lunch. Seemed like a good, traditional country pub.
29 Jul 2009 18:26
A good town-centre pub, neither grungy not tarted up. Also, no piped music, which is big plus.

"More of a restaurant than a pub. Old Speckled Hen on tap."
100% restaurant, 0% pub, with no (real) draught beer at all. Having said that, the food was very good (though with nouvelle-cuisine-sized portions).

The Rupert Brooke, Grantchester
Comment of 24 Feb. 2008: Harveys, not Hardys. A splendid beer, but not common outside Sussex. As for the pub, I agree with the other comments. Food seems to be good, but a bit pricey.
14 Apr 2009 23:23
Good inexpensive food, good beer and a good atmosphere, with helpful and courteous staff.

The Boot and Slipper, Amersham
(An addendum to my post of 25 May 2008.) We thought we would see if things had improved. Beer (Bombardier) OK, starter adequate, but of the main meals, mine was mediocre (and bad value), and my wife's was, she tells me, "the most disgusting food I have ever tasted in a pub". AVOID.
25 Mar 2009 23:52
Turned up on a Saturday evening. "Have you booked?" No. Offered a tiny table next to a very noisy party, so we left. All the symptoms of a tarted-up gastropub. If that's what you want, fine. Otherwise...
22 Feb 2009 16:23
An excellent pub: unspoilt without being grungy, good beer, good bar food (I haven't yet tried the restaurant menu), courteous and unobtrusive service, and a real fire (when needed).

On localyyokaly's comment. I've had a meal here several times recently and never seen any trouble.

The George Inn, Great Missenden
Now shut. A pity because once upon a time (10 years ago) it was a flourishing pub, with good beer and food. Still, it has a good position and a fine building, so let's hope that someone is brave enough to try again.
19 Oct 2008 19:37
Good atmosphere (no music, hooray), with a fine range of Wadsworths beer, not just the usual 6X. Food OK, but pricey for what it is -- I suppose given the superb location, they don't have to try very hard, so they don't.

The Lambert Arms, Aston Rowant
Just had a makeover, probably rather an expensive one by the look of it, and now the feel is more of a hotel set up for corporate entertainment than a vilage pub. Anyway, my wife and I didn't stay long enough to try either the food or the beer: loudspeakers everywhere, with drivelling pop music coming out of them all. If you don't mind that, the menu didn't look bad.
28 Sep 2008 16:56
Dropped in for Sunday lunch. An excellent village local, adapted for modern conditions without losing the traditional atmosphere. Good beer, and a good meal. Only minus point: the coffee was stewed and barely drinkable.
7 Sep 2008 14:29
Tried it out on the basis of the reviews below. A good pint of Old Speckled Hen. Good value menu for bar snacks and 'pub classic' dishes, but not a place for foodies. Piped music rather obtrusive. Superb view from the restaurant section (and the garden) across the Thames Valley.
6 Sep 2008 16:25
A bit scruffy inside, but a good cheap baguette and baked potato, and a decent pint of Bombardier. Friendly service.
28 Aug 2008 16:55
A pleasant place to stay, with an attractive room at a very reasonable price and a good English breakfast, but there was loud music in the bar, so we ate elsewhere.
15 Aug 2008 15:02
Very pleasant atmosphere, and good beer, but the bar snacks (salads, baguettes) are unimpressive: quite expensive with small portions. The coffee came without a chocolate or even a biscuit. Not good enough.
15 Aug 2008 14:36
Good cheap bar food, and an excellent range of beer. I'll be back.
1 Jun 2008 17:53
Seems to be shut, or at least is was last Friday when I passed by.
1 Jun 2008 17:49
Same chain as the Firecrest, the other side of Wendover, with the same merits and drawbacks, but a slightly better choice of beer: London Pride and 6X.

The Boot and Slipper, Amersham
My wife and I used to come here a lot: the food, though not brilliant, was generally goodish, and there was an ever-changing variety of beers- some not widely available in the south-east (e.g. Jennings). Then the food started going downhill, one couldn't order drinks from the bar, and finally, the last time we went, we were told that we would have to wait until the waitress found us a table (it wasn't full, or even nearly full). We turned tail and haven't been back since. A pity, because Amersham isn't exactly packed with good pubs (except yoof pubs, perhaps).
25 May 2008 14:58
Good basic pub food, quite cheap, with decent-sized portions. Pleasant atmosphere, though slightly synthetic: it feels like a chain pub (which it is). Main gripe is the beer: the only real ale is Wadworth 6X, and this sometimes seems to have slightly metallic flavour.
25 May 2008 14:48
Good, quite cheap pub food, changing reasonably often. Good service, and a nice atmosphere. Beer OK, but only Greene King: Abbot/IPA not my first choice by a long way.

The Mounts Bay, Mullion
Very good food, but the place feels like an (over-lit) restaurant, not a proper pub.
