The Winchester, Islington

Been here twice for people's birthdays and it's useful for that sort of gathering because there are large tables that can be reserved for groups and the two for one cocktails are excellent value. I found it strange that you had to go downstairs into the kind of club room to order the two for one cocktails instead of being able to buy them upstairs as well, as they did have cocktail materials behind the bar upstairs, but maybe it's easier to serve large crowds of people down there and keep the upstairs free for food orders. The first time I went though a DJ set himself up and started playing awful music so loudly that we had to ask him to turn it down because nobody could hear what other people were saying.

The Archway Tavern, Archway

It's called the Dusk Till Dawn now and my boyfriend's band played there so I went along and I thought it was fine. The bar staff were friendly, and there was another room at the back which had some other music event on so there seemed to be a lot happening in there on a saturday night. I wouldn't go there for a drink unless there was a band playing but I've been in worse pubs.

The Bald Faced Stag, East Finchley

I've eaten here a couple of times and it's quite expensive but the menu was always interesting. However, the last time I went I ordered a shellfish dish, which cost me 13, and was presented with a portion which in no way, shape, or form was worth that amount of money, and then the next day I was ill so I've never been back since.

Crobar, Soho

Entirely unimpressed with this place. Pokey, uncomfortable, and the only cider they've got is Kopparberg so if you don't like that and you're a cider drinker then bad luck I'm afraid. The toilets are also awful, it isn't worth going here just for the metal soundtrack.

The Two Tubs Inn, Bury

Fantastic! My favourite pub in Bury, I go here every time I'm in town. Plenty of space, really good atmosphere and interesting layout with different rooms. Last time I was in there an Irish folk band started playing at the back and we got two and a half hours of it for free, it was fantastic.

Big Red, Holloway

Fantastic place, my favourite rock bar in London. Loads of paraphernalia on the walls and yes, there are empty jack daniel's bottles with candles in on the tables which is heading towards cheesy, but you need to see the comedy in rock and metal and I really like it. Good music, good food and a highly enjoyable place to hang out in.

The Intrepid Fox, St Giles

The rudest piece of being ignored I've ever experienced. We were stood at the bar for a good fifteen minutes and not one member of bar staff came anywhere near us. Yes, it was busy, but not that busy and the entire atmosphere of the place just gave me the impression that you go there to pose and show off how metal you are. I love metal but it's a pub, I'm there for a drink, the one thing that it seemed impossible to get hold of.

The Rose and Crown, Highgate

This is a really nice pub to go to on a sunday in the summer where you can sit outisde in the garden area at the back and enjoy a quiet afternoon. The food was always really interesting and worth the price. However, apparently the place is under new management and the menu's been changed to the borning pie, mash, roast menu that you can get anywhere. I haven't been since the change so I can't comment on the food any longer but if you live in north London and want a nice pub to relax in, it serves that purpose well. If it's too cold to go outside though, there aren't that many tables inside and it's more of a gastropub than a place to sit and drink so I'd head to one of the other pubs around.

The Old Thameside Inn, London Bridge

Always busy due to it being next to Borough Market but if you can get a seat upstairs it's fine for a sit down after spending time there. We went downstairs once though and it was quite dark and smelt very odd and damp.

The Sanctuary House, Westminster

I've always found this an enjoyable pub to spend time in if I can get a seat away from the TV. There's a good selection of food, though I did have to send my fish pie back because it was frozen in the middle. Useful if you're showing people around Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace etc. because it's off the tourist trail a bit so therefore quiet at a weekend. Weekdays it's a popular after-office boozer. Has a bit of character with all of the polished wood in it.

The John Snow, Soho

I like the atmosphere in here and the fact that it's off the busy shopping area of Carnaby Street so fewer people tend to make it down there on a busy saturday. If the upstairs room is closed however, you're not going to get a seat. I've always found the bar staff pleasant and it's nice to pop in for a drink when i'm in the area. Food's not that exciting but does the job.

Spaniards Inn, Hampstead Heath

Looking through other comments, evidently this can be a bit of a hit and miss affair - I went on a saturday and had a really nice meal there, I thought the menu was interesting and even though it cost more than I'd usually pay for food in a pub, I enjoyed the experience and would go back. However, in the summer months, I can see it getting very, very busy.

The Old White Lion, East Finchley

Fairly average, the menu's a bit more interesting than the generic pub food you can get in pubs and I have been there with friends for sunday lunch which was good. It's nice in the summer when you can sit outside and watch the chickens.

Dignity (Taylors of Finchley), Finchley

I really like it in here, there's a pub quiz on wednesday evenings and they have live music nights. The food's good and reasonably priced and they usually have a guest ale in. It's not a place to travel specifically to Finchley for, but if you're around the area you could do a lot worse.

The Cock Tavern, Kilburn

Never, ever buy food here. I got a BLT and it was absolutely shocking - two slices of thin white processed sliced bread cut into triangles, heavily spread with margerine, and when I looked inside half of the already small portion of badly cooked bacon was fat and there were only one or two pieces of tomato throughout the whole thing. It's the worst sandwich I have ever had the misfortune to be presented with. How anybody can make such a hash of cooking some bacon is completely beyond me, and my boyfriend's opinion of the pad thai that he got was that it was 'a bit strange'. Added to this, we had to wait for quite a while for it because the barmaid came over and told us that she'd lost the chef.

Fine for a pint and a game of pool if you get the table that has a cue ball instead of the other one where we had to use spare yellow pool balls scribbled on in felt tip, but I repeat, don't buy food here.
