The Castlenau, Barnes

It has been a victim of a series of grossly overblown and badly-run food/drink ventures. They see the site, with its massive visibility, and think that in a legendarily rich burg like Barnes it's a licence to print money. Well, rich poncy people are not stupid. Somebody should get a good manager and make it into a proper mixed pub, with posh bits to make dough, and cheap bits to keep things ticking over. It's too big for a single class business. I am amazed that it hasn't been turned into flats.

The Ten Bells, Norwich

It's a drink pub not a food pub. They didn't make money at lunchtime. So they don't open at lunchtime.

The Reedcutter, Cantley

I wish people wouldn't change the names of pubs. It used to be The Red House. Mind you I should visit more than once every four years.

The Bricklayers Arms, Putney

I agree with comments below; great pub; Downton too expensive; staff friendly, though when I sent a pint back the other night the barman made a great show of collaring it for himself, only to sheepishly pour it away when he realised that yes, it was the end of the barrel and therefore not drinkable. Still by far the best pub in Putney.

The Captains Cabin, Piccadilly

Billy Bragg had a regular gig here in the early 80's. People came from as far afield as Battersea. Hardly the Cavern, but still a minor slice of music history

The Patrick Kavanagh, Moseley

Was this pub once called the Trafalgar?

The Bricklayers Arms, Putney

2 out of three beers we tried the other night were not right. They need to watch it and not rest on their well-deserved Laurels.

The Sun Inn, Barnes

I make a point of going in to the Sun at least once every two years, to remind myself why I don't use the place. My last visit was New Year's Eve 2006 or was it 2005? We dropped in on the way from The Coach to elsewhere, walked up to the bar and ordered drinks, no good, closed. On the way out, I met a man coming in. "Don't go in there mate," I remarked, "the F*****g C***s have shut the F*****G bar, Wan***s." "I know," he said coldly "I'm the Manager." I shall always remember the look of frustration and bafflement on his cross little face as he realised that he could not bar me since I never go in there, and could not throw me out since I was already leaving. Happy days. I have given up swearing now.

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

what's the web address for the petition?

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

Great pub, though last night's bitter was borderline. Good, very loud music. Well worth saving

The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden

Wonderful building, beer (youngs) vinegary, staff less than perfect. Did I really pay 24 for seven drinks, including a half? Haven't been there for a while, so hopefully just an off night.

The Bridge, Barnes

Bit of a poser this one. First thing, it really is not a pub. it is geared to parties of well-heeled people sitting at tables eating. I would never in a million years use this as a local. It can be ludicrously poncey and pompous (the barman took our order, mixed a cocktail, then brought us the wrong drinks) There is table service for drinks. All this costs money. That said, if you want a less formal restaurant where some people are eating and some arent, and you can afford 20 to 40 for a pub meal, and you don't want to mix with ordinary people, use the Bridge. If you want a proper pub, go to the Coach and Horses. Cote de Boeuf very good.

The White Cross, Richmond

St George's day was a great success. The speed of service is better than ever before, beer not bad, and great music. refurb a bit so-what-ish, haven't looked upstairs. Like most pub refurbishments it will look fine after about 20 years wear and tear.

U Fleku, Prague

Sorry, I meant the beer is a lot cheaper in Hostinec U Cerneho Vola.

U Fleku, Prague

I rather liked it actually, I take the view that as tourists we are there to contribute to the country as sheep contribute to the farm, by being shorn or fleeced. That said, ten beers, two Becherovkas and two dinners for 28 quid doesn't sound too bad to me, but I am a poncey Londoner. Beer's a lot cheaper in U Fleku.

Hostinec U Cerneho Vola, Prague

Yes,a basic pub, pure and simple. We got there too late for food, (watch out it closes at 10 on sunday). It is a simple room full of simple pursuits, drinking and talking. Also the cheapest beer we found in Prague, (25k about 60p for 0.4l.) Less is more.

The White Hart Hotel, Hingham

Lovely Old-fashioned pub in the market place of little Norfolk Town. Music in the bar Some days.
Good sunday lunches.

17 Apr 2007 14:32

The Three Tuns, Ashwell

Real public bar with normal people, restaurant/lounge bar with reps and travelling couples. Good food, striking barmaid, competent beer. Real village.

The White Hart Hotel, Hingham

Independant Pub, went there for sunday lunch, good straightforward boozer with cheap decent food. There was a highly competent bunch of folkish musicians playing in the bar. Definitely worth nurturing.

The Bull's Head, Barnes

Quite agree with PhilsPint. An idiosyncratic Landlord, good beer, often good music, the Most venerable barman in the known world (Con). A fairly old-fashioned pub of a sort that is rapidly disappearing. Generally A Good Thing.

The Fontmell, Fontmell Magna

Nice village. Stayed there a few days ago, not bad at all though the beer was in a bit of a turmoil. Excellent blues on friday night, all in all a very friendly boozer. Have a word with the chap in the bar corner, been in the village all his life, full of info on the area.

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

A real pub in the centre of London. Excellent!!!

The Idle Hour, Barnes

Sunday night, empty, but good pint of Adnams and a very friendly barman. For an Aussie. All in all not bad.

The Wasdale Head Inn, Wasdale Head

A pub in the middle of the Lakiest, Walkiest Part of our noble land, which does not allow Dogs???????!!!!

5 Dec 2006 20:29

The Bell Inn, Aldworth

Ask if they still do Two-stroke, a mix of something and something else, which, if I remember, was excellent. I think.

5 Dec 2006 17:54

The Ten Bells, Norwich

Great little boozer. Friendly staff and punters, nice sparky landlady. No food interrupting the main business.

The Red Lion, Betchworth

Fetched up here on a sunday night looking for food, and found it. Yes it was dead, but it was a very wet sunday night, though I agree that they should keep some tables for drinking and try to cheer up some of the staff. Food slightly better than OK for a pub, a bit over the odds but not too bad. I woudn't use it a a local.

14 Aug 2006 09:37

The Lass O'Gowrie, Manchester

Fantastic basis for a good boozer, just a bit sticky and jaded when I was last there. Needs a good clean. Barman a bit dozy, but it was midnight.

30 Jul 2006 22:10

The Ship Inn, Wincle

Lovely pub, good beer. England won the second test while we were having two pints. Barman/manager was a little short with woman and child in our party, before blokes turned up, nothing serious but unnecessary, one small imperfection.

30 Jul 2006 22:03

Orange Tree, Richmond

Whatever happened to the rudest barmaid in history? I went to the Orange Tree once for a funeral wake, asked for my pint of ordinary to be changed as it was cloudy, and was subjected to a tirade from this woman. When the Landlord came down she reported me and the son of the deceased to him for our impertinence. Sometimes you just have to stand back and wonder. Her name was Sharon, or perhaps Tracy.

24 Jul 2006 11:24

The Marquess of Anglesey, Covent Garden

I have been using this pub for a very long time, so I was highly hacked off when I recently declined a pint of muddy ordinary, and was told that it was perfectly OK. Making allowances for badly-trained bar staff, I was polite but firm, whereupon the manager came over and said that yes indeed it was perfectly OK but simply a little cloudy because they had been selling so much. It was like mud!!! What is happening to Young's? The refurb is not to my taste but this is a busy city pub so you don't always expect comfort, but young's is all about the beer, and even if the beer's off The staff should shut up and change it if asked (politely)

14 Feb 2006 14:20

The Bricklayers Arms, Putney

Now properly renamed The Bricklayers Arms. I hope it will be getting back to the Glory Days. Good pint of Tim Taylors, charming smiling manageress, the future's bright.

14 Feb 2006 14:07

The Angel Coaching Inn, Heytesbury

Better than nothing, doesn't look like a pub inside, and is really more of a restaurant. Good food, but expensive. Full of stupendously posh people. Pretty slick cooking as you would hope, but B&B operation not so slick (Burnt toast, odd tastes, lousy tea, slow service). Cask beer reasonable, a bit flat, not too expensive. Better management would improve the place no end.

The Butt and Oyster, Chelmondiston

CLASSIC PUB IN WATERSIDE LOCATION IN THIS LOVELY SUFFOLK VILLAGE. A MUST FOR FANS OF ADNAMS AND ARTHUR RANSOME

The Bell, Purleigh

Stick to All Bar One Kathy, this is not your place. I've just dropped in by chance, had a good lunch and a couple of perfect pints of Adnams. Friendly Landlord, perfect location, no Bullshit.
