The Head of Steam, Newcastle

Always thought this bar lacked any atmosphere. Simply a place to go for a pint - one pint - then leave.

Actually, I don't even have one pint there now, there's better bars close by.

Trillians Rock Bar, Newcastle

As has been said in an earlier post, there's been too many changes. Once a true rock bar, it's now looking more like a city centre theme pub with every new makeover. Beer quality is variable (and they stopped selling Caffreys too - a bitter blow!). Okay for watching live bands though, if that's your thing. I preferred the place when it was 'The Jubilee', back in the late 70's.

...I'd also like a pound for every time I've ordered food and been told 'that's off the menu today'.

Okay for the odd pint if passing but that's about it.

The Telegraph, Newcastle

Dull bar. Absolutely nothing to make it stand out. Not worth the walk from the Station really.

Avoid.

Gotham Town, Newcastle

A novelty when it first opened, but now very shabby. Beer is nothing special either.

Avoid.

The Percy Arms, Newcastle

Used to be a proper bikers bar back in the 70's, now I don't know what it's supposed to be. The few times I've been in lately the beer has been poor - even the couple of glasses of coke I got were vile.

Avoid.

The Goose at the Gardens, Newcastle

Not been in here for a while but the place was rapidly going downhill even then. Beer was cheap enough but outweighed by the long wait to get served if the place was busy. Meals (and coffee) tended to be served lukewarm and not very big portions. Toilets were shabby, broken tiles everywhere.

I stopped coming in.

The Forth Hotel, Newcastle

Never had a decent pint in here on the few times I've been in. It may have been done out but it still lacks any sort of atmosphere and still has the same disinterested staff.

Avoid.

The Fluid Bar and Kitchen, Newcastle

One of my regular haunts - mainly on Saturdays for my dinner. Nice decor, beer is always good quality and I don't mind paying a bit more for that. Meals are excellent and don't take long to serve and staff are very friendly.

Yes, it can take a while to get served when the place is full, such as on a match day and the TV's show non-stop sport - though all pubs do this these days.Sometimes the volume is turned down so I can hear the free jukebox (that's a rarity too!).

Large upstairs area and toilets are immaculate (and warm too). Highly recommended.

The Free Trade Inn, Byker

A very ordinary, extremely dull bar with awful (and over-priced) beer. Tatty interior (but this is not 'designer' tatty, this is genuine tattty!).

Avoid.

The Five Swans, Newcastle upon Tyne

Looks a little scruffy on the inside, and the top bar seemed to be closed - or if it was open then none of the bar staff bothered going up there. Toilets are totally disgusting and need a visit from Health Dept as soon as possible; the smell was unbelievable, probably from drains but I wouldn't rule out 50 dead cats being under there somewhere.

On the plus side, beer was okay and there was a real flame fire to sit next too. I won't be going back simply on account of the state of the toilets though..certainly wouldn't buy food from there either if that's their standards!

The Three Bulls Heads, Newcastle

Great pub. I wasn't too keen on it years ago as it was a bit shabby and seemed to cater totally for the Toon Army, but it's been done out and now it's much better. The upstairs dining area is very smart and food is good, hot and arrives fast. Friendly staff too, can't fault the service.

Downstairs still gets the same mix of people, young and old, still gets full on match days and the pub opens at 9am...the breakfast menu includes beans on toast and porridge! (plus you can have a pint with that too if you really must). Earliest I've been in was 10am and it's nice to sit and watch the world go by with a pint of Carlsberg, which is about the cheapest in town and great quality.

Definitely one of the better pubs in town. Recommended.

The New Bridge, Newcastle

Back in the late 80's/early 90's, this used to be a proper pub; always full of local regulars, especially at weekends. Now I have no idea who it's supposed to cater for - probably the 'suits' and students.

I was in there last Saturday afternoon and the place was empty at midday; it used to be HEAVING! I was informed that 'we don't do food on a Saturday'. The half of Stella I had tasted of line-cleaner and was as flat as a witch's you-know-what.

Yet another example of taking a perfectly good, viable pub, tarting it up, alienating the locals and ending up with an empty pub on a Saturday afternoon. Serves 'em right. Unrecommended.

By the way..the pub next door (used to be Joe Wilsons, another thriving local) was also totally empty and THEY 'don't do food on Saturday' either. I rest my case.

The Dog and Parrot, Newcastle

Good student-type pub with no pretenses. Great manager and staff, good sized house trebles and excellent jukebox. Best bar in the area.

Crown Posada, Newcastle

Claustrophobic!!! Even Posh Spice would have trouble walking the length of tha bar...

The Trent House, Newcastle

Full of students who only talk to other students. Uninterested bar staff (more students), poor range of beers (and not well kept on draught), not cheap, jukebox is free but Iooks like it was made from a job-lot of records someone found in a carrier bag behind a hedge, dingy toilets with a capacity of ONE person standing. Wonderful bar!
