Red Lion, Water End

Took my father in law in, a retired french chef turned chef teacher to the mightiest french cullinary giants ever, and I was embarrassed to my toenails. First of all I didn't know it'd been refurbished. It looks nice but the minute I saw the clientelle ie the 'beautiful' people I felt sick to my stomach. All style and no substance...and that perfectly describes the food.
How could I have taken a french chef into this place!! I still feel ill from the humiliation. Even after going for the simple option of pizza..it was served cold!!

This place used to be fantastic. I wanted to show off the great beef and ale pie they used to do.

It's hideous, absolutely hideous. My father in law offered to teach the 'chefs' there for free....

The Spotted Bull, Hemel Hempstead

Absolute eyesore. Frequented by builders and council estate trash. I'd happier see it gone. Brings Apsley down into the gutter

Ye Olde Red Lion, Hemel Hempstead

Cracking pub, along the canal. Live music, huge outdoor agedne ie field. Lanlord makes a BIG effort for kids. Absolutely top rank. Staff a bit slow though.
How a pub should be run. WELL DONE!

Paper Mill, Hemel Hempstead

Good pub but expensive, properly expensive. Kids seem to be welcome but have started to get an uncomfortable feeling taking them in. No effort made to welcome kids. Finally have some proper stools/high chairs around the bar!

Food is OK but classic british nonsense. Fish and chips. Battered this that and burgers. Please god, you have a kitchen full of chefs, have none of you seen a french menu?! I want someone to take the deep fryer out and chuck it in the canal. I'd murder for a proper steak bearnnaise, or a fresh onion soup with parmesan. And for gods sakes serve fresh baguette with meals!!!!! I don't want to have to ask!
Lovely relaxing pub in summer though. A strong contender.

The Thomas Burke, Leigh

Not a bad boozer. used to be the old Cinema. First time in last week, what a shock - nice to see Leigh making an effort for a change. It's quite a scary site seeing Leighonians spending money - tight buggers would normally see their own town run down than support it by throwin a bit of dole money about. Good pub, good beer. One of my glasses had lipstick marks on which I absolutely hate, but they took it back and changed it. Hope I haven't caught owt, Leigh birds are right stringers

The Hare and Hounds, Leigh

Nice pub, but modern appearance belies a decline in popularity in recent years. In a place where familiarity is paramount the modern decor is at odds with what the locals want, a homely atmosphere. Loud youths and a growing reputation as a troublespot don't help. on the plus side, they pull an excellent beer with a good head and are rock solid on quality. Needs more of the locals back. Shame.

Hervey's Wine Bar, Holmfirth

Seriously awful. If you're a real ale drinker (ie the vast minority) you might like the beer, otherwise you won't. The serving staff are horribly stroppy and the food...oh God where do I start...
Served cold. All food is simply served cold. How can you get nachos wrong? How is that possible? Pitta bread and humous...if all you have to do is defrost it (don't you just love british cuisine) how can you get it wrong? The bread was cold and barely defrosted, the humous...I wouldn't have thought you could get that wrong. Awful, tasted of nothing. I've been sick and produced better food.
To be honest, this was the worst pub I think I've ever been to. It's not even well located. Holmfirth promises so much but actually isn't that nice...prams in the river etc...but Herveys pub hammered the final nail in its coffin. Hopefully it'll be closed soon.
