Carpenters Arms, Bethnal Green

A good pub, certainly one of the best in this part of town. I always pop in for one when nearby...

Beer pretty good, but i think time to be a bit more experimental and push boat out a little!

7.5/10

The Harp, Covent Garden

wow....BITE has gone crazy, written diarrahoea everywhere...

The Harp is a super super pub, former heavery weight champion and still to this day a contender, great service and great beer and with out competition anywhere nearby for the quality and range of its beer.

So much has been written on this site lately comparing it to other pubs, why bother, its a supreme champion, its weathered the years and been getting better. In my opinion it is streets ahead of the Old Mite, the Wenlock, the Old Fountain but not the CASK. I think the newcomer is its equal, its ealy days and would never presume to say its better, but when it comes to the choice of beer and quality i prefer the CASK, i think the range is more adventurous and they more often have beers on that i havent tried before...its ticker heaven some days.

But the Harp is still the Champion and it is up to the CASK to show over time it can continue in its current form and warrent a place in the pantheon next to the Harp.

The Harp is for me a 9.5/10

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

Visited for the first time and expected a lot... after all this is one of Londons most famous ale houses....

I guess i was disappointed, wasnt what i expected. The beer was ok, nothing better than that (one redemption beer quite good), but i guess what amazed me was how tired and dirty the place was...dont get me wrong, the beer comes first and foremost, but i have to say its a good while since i was in such a grubby pub, they need to steam clean everything.

Young bar staff on, young chap knew his stuff and was friendly.

I am fairly sure a little tlc could restore this pub to its lofty previous position, but at the moment, dont think it deserves its big reputation

The Old Fountain, Old Street

A very nice pub but i didnt think it was outstanding.

They had seven ales on when i visited, i was a little underwhelmed by the choice and cannot understand why a freehouse and one seemingly so highly praised would have London Pride on.

They had a Sam smiths wheat beer on keg, interesting to some i guess but i prefer a good authentic German weisse myself. surely there are enough Sam smiths pubs around to let them sell there own beers....

i would come back if in the area, but wouldnt make special journey, that said, this place is in different league its rival the Wenlock!

The Bricklayers Arms, Putney

A great little pub, none better in Putney and i would not have a problem saying it is in the top 20 in London.... beer always good. Only constructive criticism is that they seem to like certain breweries to point of not having enough new beers on... but still great pub.
