The Cat and Mutton, Hackney

Hackney is changing, and becoming better all the time. The revamping of C&M was much needed, where all the "battersby-dingle" types drink now, I don't know, nor do I care!

Sunday lunch in here is great, I always look forward to meeting my "Meeja" mates when we all meet up for a pint here and discuss the latest in "big hair techniques"

Baxter's Court, Hackney

The pub that lost its personality. Like most chain owned pubs, this "branch" of Wetherspoons on Mare Street has the design potential to be great place.

Unfortunatley, it all stops at the architechture, because this place is about as exciting, welcoming and comfortable as a dentist waiting room.

The staff are freindly enough (sometimes) - but they lack the love of the job of their independent counterparts.

The food is lousy and plastic tasting - but does that surprise you? The range of drinks is quite good and reasonably priced, but I would rather pay 20p extra for a pint served in a pub where I feel relaxed than here where I just feel like I need to clock watch.

The Old Ship, Hackney

The comfiest pub sofa's in the world can be found here! Sitting in the Old Ship and chatting to mates over a pint is like being at home. The floorspace is huge with tables and chairs at one end and huge comfy sofas at the other.

A mixture of people drink in here from Twentysomethings to Seventyodds and a Media-Types to Builder-Types. This place just cant be pidgeon holed.

Football is shown on the huge plasma screens and the bar staff are always courteous.

The music is varied, depending on who is behind the bar. All in all a nice little booxer that you wouldn't be ashamed to take your mates from outside the area to.

Essence Bar, Farringdon

The staff here should be given lessons in smiling!! The DJ was lousy and the cocktail was watery. Not good!

The Shakespeare, Clerkenwell

I visited this large pub just across the road from Barbican Tube Station for lunch today. I wish I didn't bother.

My wife and I chose our lunch from the reasonably priced menu and the indifferent bar maid took our order.

The first thing that I found a bit odd was the way she held the "chip and pin" pad in the air for me to enter my pin number rather than placing it on the counter, with quite a few people standing around I found this a bit uncomfortable.

We chose our table and sat waiting, and waiting, and waiting for our food - no one bothered to come and explain the delay - other pubs that serve food do!

After 45 mins our lunchbreak was almost over where were the simple dishes we had ordered? (A burger, onion rings and a chicken sandwich) we went to the bar where the barmaid explained that "everyone was having a go at her and there was only one chef working" - We were not having a go! We just asked how long our food would be!

Perhaps she should have told us this when we ordered! After all most of the other customers were also on their lunchbreak!!

It was quite hard to talk over the loud heavy metal music they were playing today - all in all an unpleasant experience at lunchtime - we ended up getting a refund as we had now wasted an hour and our entire lunchbreak!

It is a shame that this one bad experience has let down a pub that has the potential to be a really nice place to stop for a lunchtime drink...
