Curlers Tavern, Glasgow

What a great spot this was back in the early 90s that is !! right next to hillhead underground as well so a perfect location ,shame that its now a tacky, soulless dump .

The Blackfriars, Glasgow

Simply the best bar in the merchant city , and probably one of the best bars in the centre of glasgow .

something for everyone really, good real ales, foreign beers, fruit beers, good selection of spirits, good food ,even comedy/music downstairs at the weekends . When its busy it can be a bit cramped but thats a minor complaint.

came here when i was at UNI 20 years ago and its refreshing to see it hasnt changed that much.

The St Vincent Bar, Edinburgh

Nice ,cosy off the beaten track bar that many pass without noticing .

The beer selection might not be the greatest and if its busy it can be a little too "cosy" but the staff seem on the ball and it has a nice ambience to it .

Wally Dug, Edinburgh

Decent selection of beers and friendly enough new town cellar pub but could do with an improvement on the cleaning front . The tables and chairs were a bit manky and it isnt cheap either .

Harry's Bar, Edinburgh

The beer is surprisingly good even if youre toiling a bit in the real ale department . The bouncers are friendly enough so its ok for a quick after work pint or 2 but as the evening progresses the sometimes scary older punters arrive and the place quickly turns into a nightmare from the 80s .

Its quite fun though and everyones friendly enough but a couple of jars is usually enough .

Tonic, Edinburgh

Small basement bar just off the city centre , does a mean cocktail and bottled beers come from huge ice box . It is dear but if youre drinking around george st way you expect that .

Not bad at all for what it is .

15 Apr 2010 17:55

The Rose and Crown, Edinburgh

totally characterless like a lot of rose st bars .

Theirs really nothing remarkable about this place at all - yet again it was much better in its former state

Ryans West End Bar, Edinburgh

Unbelievably dear and soulless gaff in the west end of edinburgh , amazingly popular too .

Gets a mark for the tight shirted barmaids and another for one of them giving me change of a 20 when id actually given her a 10 .

Currently home to the "quickest sit down lunch in edinburgh" .

what an accolade.

Bailie Bar, Stockbridge

Really nice below street level stockbridge boozer .

Its big enough with extra seats through the back and a roaring fire . Sky sports for the football and a decent quality pint , decent selection all round . staff ok as well .

It can get very crowded around the bar and a lot of the locals treat the gaff as their personal property which can be annoying but theirs no doubting its a quality shop.

15 Apr 2010 16:43

Wally Dug, Edinburgh

Can tend to be overrun by poshos from the newtown and edinburgh uni , but has its share of decent punters too .

Beers not bad , but i found it on the expensive side .

Cafe Royal, Edinburgh

Beautiful pub physically and if youre new to the city you must have a look but ive found the service to be slow and its always way too busy and overstuffed with suits from the nearby banks for my taste .

Think they have tried to improve the quality of the beer of late but the selection isnt that inspiring and id much rather hit the guildford next door.

15 Apr 2010 16:27

The Black Bull Tavern, Edinburgh

Another long established edinburgh boozer , has a bit of character at least and seems to be a haunt for those who love hard rock ,goth types etc .

Good jukebox, pool table and selection of beers and a real "no messing" kind of attitude abounds . A few of the punters look a bit scary but ive never had or seen any bother .

You could do a lot worse.

15 Apr 2010 16:24

The Star Bar, Edinburgh

Friendly ,Pleasant little new town bar tucked away in side lane .

Decent draught beer , great cheap jukebox and table football. And a nice beer garden . can get very busy and as its a small shop that can be a bit uncomfortable as their isnt a huge amount of seating .

Like it though .

25 Jan 2010 18:01

The Kings Wark, Leith

Its got one of the best and biggest breakfasts you will ever encounter , but it is really more a place for food than beer as theirs not so much space if youre not at a table .

Very attractive setting though and the guinness i had was perfect .

22 Jan 2010 14:03

The Golf Tavern, Edinburgh

This used to be one of the most character filled, atmospheric pubs in edinburgh and the refurb to a sports bar has completely ruined the place -- , seems to be the way edinburghs going sadly .

22 Jan 2010 13:42

Ensign Ewart, Edinburgh

Hate this pub , landlord is unfriendly ,youre not encouraged to stay if youre not a tourist , place is full of bizarre rules like no standing at the bar etc , pin no required for the loo (i mean that is just a joke) and the food was disgusting .

youre better off at deacon brodies or the jolly judge .

22 Jan 2010 13:39

The Mercat, Edinburgh

Nice enough pub , a little bit too shiny with sports channel tvs on the walls but the bar is too small to stand at and the beer choice is fairly small . My amstel was a little on the flat side , and the food dissapointing.

But the staff were friendly and its probably still the best pub in the vicinity .

22 Jan 2010 13:27

Whistle Binkies, Edinburgh

This was once a really special late night drinking hole , full of interesting people and would have a bit of acoustic sing-song music on for the late night drinkers .

Since its refurb , you get a door charge , dull wannabe rock bands ,neandrathal bouncers and exorbitant prices . what a shame .

20 Jan 2010 18:28

The Beehive, Edinburgh

This place used to be packed out with people drinking and dancing at the weekends now its sold its soul for the tourist dollar its a totally unremarkable pub .

It does have a nice beergarden out the back though for those festival nights ,but much better places to go even in the grassmarket

20 Jan 2010 18:21

The Guildford Arms, Edinburgh

Always has been one of the best pubs in edinburgh , still is an amazing spot for a pint - and something for ever palatte especially real ales .

But it does get hugely busy at the weekends and can be hard to get served from the small bar , but boy is it worth it .

20 Jan 2010 18:11

The Jekyll and Hyde, Edinburgh

Sure people come to see the hidden toilet behind the bookcase , but it gets tiring quickly and the real horror story here is the draught beer.

20 Jan 2010 18:06

Queens Arms, Edinburgh

Service can be slow , but its not a bad little basement bar - good for watching the footie with its multi screens.

20 Jan 2010 18:04

The Three Tuns, Edinburgh

Just dreadful , dont even think about going here .

20 Jan 2010 18:01

Belushis, Edinburgh

Theirs a hostel upstairs so expect loads of loud ,young obnoxious aussie and yank backpackers in the bar.

It does open really early at the weekend , which is handy if youre going out to watch the football.

20 Jan 2010 17:59

The Malt Shovel, Edinburgh

This was a really nice edinburgh boozer until like so many it got the customary makeover , the emphasis shifting to food for tourists .

The place has gone downhill without a doubt , and the staff look like they couldnt care less.

20 Jan 2010 17:57

The Bow Bar, Edinburgh

Fantastic real ale spot , friendly knowledgable staff, punters friendly if leaning to the old man side - good selection of whiskys.

No music , no frills , but does what it says on the till .

20 Jan 2010 17:52

Sandy Bells, Edinburgh

This is what its all about - old school pub, folk singers, plenty of chat and the drink flowing.

Theirs little space, its chaotic but its friendly as it comes .

20 Jan 2010 17:47

The Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh

Nice idea combining a restaurant with a live music venue and it looks great with nice booths and lighting but their is little room to move between tables and bar and its extortionately expensive .

Ok for a change , but wouldnt make a habit of coming here.

20 Jan 2010 17:24

The Theatre Royal, Edinburgh

Stunning looking boozer, nice decor with plenty of space and friendly staff, but on commenting that my heineken was off the barmaid responded with a shrug off her shoulders . For that im reluctant to return .

Its got a nice big screen at the front for footy but i get the feeling food being served to the pre theater crowd is the priority here .

Its pretty dear as well.

20 Jan 2010 17:20

Conan Doyle, Edinburgh

Place has always been a bit grubby and last time i was in the beer tasted funny .

Come to think of it theirs always smoke belching out the kitchen as well every time i go by .

On balance id give this one a miss .

20 Jan 2010 17:17

The Out House, Edinburgh

friendly staff and relatively quiet outside of the weekends due to its secluded location - and the beergarden is great .

20 Jan 2010 17:14

Bar Kohl, Edinburgh

If it wasnt for the endless crap hip-hop played at deafening volumes this place wouldnt be bad for a quick stopover for a few shots , and the beers in the fridge are reasonably cold for a change too....

20 Jan 2010 17:12

The Cameo Cinema Bar, Edinburgh

Really nice space to enjoy a cold one or a coffee , nice and dark with a good selection of drinks, service can be a little slow if a film is on .

Huge improvement on the narrow corridor and counter from the past as older edinburgh cinema fans will remember .

18 Jan 2010 18:16

Bennet's Bar, Edinburgh

A legendary edinburgh pub that has lost a bit of its magic over the years .

18 Jan 2010 18:08

The Basement Bar, Edinburgh

One of edinburghs best pubs , friendly staff , great thought and choice has gone into the drink selection with plenty of foreign beers and it has a nice smoker friendly area outside . It also seems to have avoided the usual influx of chavs and posho students which is a result .

The food is really good (as others have said you may need to book a table as their is limited space) however even though it is on the expensive side you dont tend to mind when youre drinking here . its worth it.

18 Jan 2010 18:05

Bannermans, Edinburgh

This was once a great pub , and while it still has the same grungey ambience , its criminally expensive for what it is .

18 Jan 2010 17:57

Cloisters Bar, Edinburgh

One of the best bars in edinburgh , tucked away off tollcross .

Fantastic real ales that change regularly , little in the way of bottled beers though but they do have wheat and fruit beers .

Staff are absolutely fine , the only thing that lets the place down is the lack of seating .

14 Jan 2010 17:34

Mathers, Edinburgh

Its a drinkers pub , mostly full of older guys watching the football or hitting the bookies next door .

Cheap and cheerful for the town at 2.50 a pint of tennants , staff more curt than courteous .

14 Jan 2010 17:30

The Cask and Barrel, Edinburgh

This is a nice looking traditional pub , full of warm people and a decent choice of real ales and lagers but the experience is somewhat ruined by a fat, miserable ,aggressive bar manager who you cant miss .
