I usually only get to this pub about once a year but visited it twice over the Easter Holidays. Seems to get everything right. Good choice of beer at a cheap price, reasonable food, nice staff and live football on tv without it spoiling the overall feel of the place

The Devonshire Inn, Sticklepath
Lovely atmosphere when we visited. Friendly locals, good beer from the barrel and a greeting from the pub dog. Pasties warmed in the aga for lunch

This pub gets it all right. Great beer, great food, great prices and a friendly landlord who has time for the customers even when it is busy

Served the worst pint I had in a week of visiting Devon pubs. Cloudy and sour. As the only other choice was Abbot I didn't bother. No wonder the only other customer in there was drinking wine. The barmaid clearly had no interest in what she was serving

The Trout and Tipple, Tavistock
I regularly visited this pub when the previous owners had it. Called in recently and it seemed a bit run down. The main toilets were closed. The others were in a cold room which smelled damp and the choice of beer was less than it used to be. I didn't eat as the chef didn't start until 1pm

I agree with the comments in the previous post. My pint of Jail was the first from a new barrel. The landlord checked it a couple of times and told me if it wasn't perfect he would change it. It was perfect but his attitude impressed me

Ridiculously small portion of food served to me recently. The first time I have ever eaten in a Devon pub and had to make a sandwich as soon as I got home

Good beer, good food, friendly locals and staff. Dogs allowed too. All I need in a pub

Visited Sunday lunchtime. Still closed at five past twelve. Went back five minutes later and it was open but no sign of any staff or customers. Waited five minutes and still saw no staff so I gave up. Funny way to run a pub. Shame because as my previous review says it was my favourite pub in Chagford

My first visit and I was impressed. Nice country feel in the front bar and the harveys was good. The back bar was showing live football but the sound didn't spread into the front bar. Good bar food too

Finally got a chance to visit and loved the place. Like travelling back 50 years so there is no point in comparing it to modern pub facilities but why would you want to? Excellent pint at 2.70, friendly staff and locals

The Moors Inn, Appleton-le-Moors
Food based pub in a pretty moors village but also welcoming if you just want a pint or two. Only Black Sheep or Timothy Taylors on offer but both well kept. Dog friendly too

The Blacksmiths Arms, Lastingham
I have always avoided this pub as I prefer a dog friendly pub when on holiday in the area but we ate there twice recently and both the food and beers were excellent especially the Copper Dragon. I was surprised about the previous comments about the Landlord. He was accommodating when we wanted to eat at short notice and found space for us in a busy dining room. I also saw him chatting to a number of other customers

The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield
We visited during their Beer Festival over the Easter Week-end. Although it was busy the staff coped well and were very friendly. Great choice of beers and ciders
Certainly no signs of the dirt or smells mentioned by the earlier poster

Qunno's review of 2008 still sums it up. Good cheap basic food, decent pint and nice homely feel to the place. Not worth going out of your way for but ok if you are in the area

Fantastic unspoilt pub. Roaring fire, good beer straight from the barrel and friendly staff Can't comment on the locals as we had the pub to ourselves when we visited but I wish it was my local

The Fox and Hounds, Romney Street
Friendly pub with a roaring fire and good food. Nice selection of beers but the qualitity can be a bit hit and miss

One of my favourite pubs. Because of the big dining areas it should be too big to feel cosy but with the fire burning and friendly staff its a great place to relax after a walk. Food and beer always excellent

This is my favourite pub in Chagford and in my opinion the only real local. Friendly staff, good beer and good home cooked food at a reasonable price

The Trout and Tipple, Tavistock
The Pub was closed for a change of owner when I visited two weeks ago and was due to re-open last week. Has anyone visited since then? It is one I visit regularly when I am in Devon and hope the new owners continue to run it the same way

There are lots of good things about this pub like the choice of beers and the location but the service can spoil it. I gave up waiting on a busy Saturday lunchtime when the two staff seemed to serve the waiting customers only when there was nothing more interesting to do and then with no attention to who had been waiting the longest

The Trout and Tipple, Tavistock
A good range of local beers served by a ladylady who knows all about them. Both times I have been here new beers were added during the evening. Prices are a bit high for the area but well worth a visit

A big improvement on the old pub. Visited last week and the Archers was good enough that I didn't try the Pride or 6X. The Bar staff were friendly and the food looked good although I didn't try any. Watch the opening hours though. I think it closes all day Mondays and Sunday evenings

Been closed for a few weeks. Hand written sign in the window says "closed until further notice"

Ate here twice this week. Food was good and the service was friendly but the beer was not particularly well kept

The Journeys End Inn, Ringmore
I visited this pub last month for the first time and agree with the last poster. All the beer I tried was well kept and it was good to see some unusual choices.
We only called in with the dog for a few drinks but were made very welcome by the owner and his wife

One of my favourite pubs. We always come here to eat when we are in the area but I don't agree that it's too restauranty. Although the food is excellent there are always a few locals at the bar and you are made welcome if you take your dog, whether you want to eat there or just have a pint

Good honest local with friendly staff and customers. Decent food and beer range with three regular bitters and always at least two guest beers.

Everything about this fantastic pub has been previously said in earlier comments. The range and quality of the beer was impressive and strangers talk to each other ( a strange experience if you are used to drinking in South London). Well worth a detour if you are travelling through the West Country and you can stock up with great food at Darts Farm just up the road

I agree with the other comments. It's one of the friendliest pubs in the area. The regulars, manager and staff all made us feel welcome when we visited for the first time recently and the Everard Tiger was excellent
22 Aug 2006 21:25
Poor selection of beers, disinterested bar staff and shouting, swearing customers who seem to be waiting for trouble. Not for me thanks
13 Jun 2006 21:51
Always been put off this place because of the look of the people drinking at the tables in front of the pub. Went in the back bar tonight and was pleasantly surprised. Friendly-ish staff and regulars. I wouldn't go out of my way to get there but it's better than the other pubs in Eltham apart from maybe the Rising Sun
13 Jun 2006 21:43
Great choice of beers, six real ales on offer and good sandwiches. Both beer and sandwiches reasonably priced. Friendly and polite service. Also separate restaurant but we didn't try it. A bit difficult to find a parking space but near enough to the Village centre to park there and walk. I wish I lived a bit nearer
23 May 2006 20:52
Agree with the other comments. I visited one lunchtime last week. No real ale despite Cask Masque and one young barmaid who ignored the people who roamed around trying to sell things to the few customers that were there. They used to sell a reasonable pint of pride but I don't think you find one here for a long time

Rising Sun, Twitton
I have never been to The Rising Sun at Twitton but the review below sounds very much like the Rising Sun at Kemsing unless they both have parrots in the corner
