The Tollington, Holloway

Excellent service on matchdays with a good sized outdoor area.

The Brunswick / B Lounge, Manchester

Overpowering smell of Bovril. Unsure if this is a theme...

The Queens Head, Weybridge

Well said huntforbeer. I drink in the North Surrey region on a regular basis and am neither a mockney nor an electric fag smoker (whatever that means in Northern slang)!

Maybe TheThirdMan should spend more time reviewing pubs in his native Macclesfield (of which I notice he has posted no reviews).

The White Swan and Cuckoo, Wapping

Perhaps the highest standard of karaoke anywhere in London. Heard a rendition of "Stuck in the Middle With You" (Stealer's Wheel, 1972) so pitch perfect I actually thought it was the original.

The British Volunteer, Weybridge

The Volley is a decent, well maintained pub with a very local feel. My only gripe is that the locals tend to form a human shield around the bar making it very difficult to get served. However, this small negative point is more than offset by the photograph of Baroness Thatcher behind the bar.

The Water Poet, Shoreditch

Smells like an open sewer and full of Nathan Barley-types. Best avoided go to Dirty Dicks.

Old Wheatsheaf, Frimley Green

A very pleasent and friendly pub; worth a visit if youre in the area.

The Prince Regent, Chertsey

A wretched hive of scum and villainy.

The Victory, Chertsey

Credit where credit's due - the Vic's Halloween decorations last weekend were top notch. The bar was covered in cobwebs, dead rats festooned the urinals, and the toothless crone/Frankenstein's Monster fancy dress theme seemed to have been adopted by almost all the punters. Come to think of it though, it was like this in May...

The Swan, Walton on Thames

Best pub in Walton-on-Thames since the John of Gaunt (the pub with the suit iof armour hanging from its exterior) closed back in the last 1970's).

22 Oct 2009 12:35

The Flintgate, Weybridge

The best fry-up east of the River Wey.

22 Oct 2009 12:27

Abaya, Weybridge

Burned down recently; bad news for its punters, good news for the rest of Weybridge.

17 Sep 2009 12:50

The Centre Page, St Pauls

Usually full of tourists who've crossed the Millennium bridge en route to St Paul's Cathedral.

The Olde Swan Hotel, Chertsey

Like the proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes, the Olde Swan has shaken off its reputation as a poorly managed, unimaginative Chertsey boozer, and now rivals the Crown as the towns premiere watering hole.

In the old days you would enter this establishment only to be confronted with tables overflowing with dirty glasses, a long-wait to get served (despite the fact the pub was empty), and a local tramp named Pierre having a conversation with himself at the bar.

These days are well gone; the bar-staff are now plentiful and efficient so that it never takes too long to get served even when busy. The bar area itself has also had a makeover and appears modern and spacious, and accommodates large numbers well.
It is also now the only pub in Chertsey where you can watch the football on Sky Sports without someone trying to sell you counterfeit DVDs, or a local asking you if you fancy arm-wrestling for money.

All in all, a massive improvement lets hope it lasts.

The Cock and Woolpack, City Of London

One of the finest pubs in the City of London; located in the heart of the City just behind the Royal Exchange, but situated on a blind spot of Finch Lane rendering it invisible from both Corhnhill and Threadneedle Street.

The Crown Hotel, Chertsey

Phil Winstanleys wife is, I believe, Lesley (son Matthew, and Great Dane Max).

Incidentally, on the subject of Crown Trivia, do any fellow BITE enthusiasts recall the Ram called Rodger who used (circa 1985) to reside in the ditch adjacent to the old garden (pre-dating the construction of the hotel)?

Rodger seemed to exist on nothing more that the beer gardens detrius and the occasion saucer of winter warmer, and brought endless cheer to the pubs patrons with his persistent battering of an old wooden gate.

The Crown Hotel, Chertsey

Just a note to say that this pub no longer subscribes to Sky Sports (presumably because of the group of rowdy Arsenal fans led by the guy in the Spain shirt who used to congregate for the Champions League matches).

31 Oct 2008 12:55

The Victory, Chertsey

The Victory is undoubtedly the worst pub in Cherstey (which considering the competition, is quite an achievement).

4 Jun 2008 13:37

Sullivans, Weybridge

Sullivans (or Sullys as it is known to the locals) it quite simply the Jewel in the Weybridge wine-bar Crown. With its eclectic 80s themed dcor, sumptuous menu and extensive wine list Sullivans quite simply has something for everyone and at a reasonable price.

The Crown Hotel, Chertsey

Excellent pub - by far the best in Chertsey. Attentive staff (including table service on some nights), Stella on tap plus Sky Sports. The Sunday Quiz-night is also one of the best around.
