The Pack Horse, Wendover

Nice pub. Was being driven thru Wendover with a mate last week. They do look after the beer and the place is kind of countryfied inside, one or two people seemed like regulars and were friendly, staffwise it was nothing special, woman behind bar a bit fed=up looking. Probably go again if passing through but not specially, shame I never got chance to do one or two of the other bars in the town

R.I.P.

Is Ladnewton the only one in the country who still drinks there? Well, Lad make the most of it cos its being buldozed in three months time :-(

The Pride of Pimlico, Pimlico

Horrid, green-fronted pub. A lot of wood inside but also some ghastly and very rude clientelles there. If you want good beer and great food come out of the Pride and do a right, then walk into the first pub you see. It's not rocket scence.

The Oakdale Arms, Harringay

Total change since last here in "06" popped in for one last week as in the location. Only 1 real ale on (miltons) and more staff than punters. What happened to the keen management and all those plans to do up the pub?

The Oxford, Kentish Town

Good ale but beware of the following.

If you are eating make sure you're going to sit in the restaurant area (diners-only, 60% of the pub space). They have a strict policy of charging 2.50 or 3 extra for bread, etc which always comes as standard on sit-down meals.

The barman justified this policy by saying to a regular (coloured gentleman who later walked out) that people "abuse the place" by ordering cheap meals and filling up on bread.

I saw the menu he was looking at - seafood looked good but it came with nothing to balance it out. I always sit in the restaurant area as thsre's more sunshine there and never knew of this rule myself.

Let the staff take a trip to the Pembury that always gets good reviews, to learn what a good pub food policy is.

The Doric Arch, Euston

Good beer quality - Dark Star Hop Head and Castlerock Harvest Pale. About the best beer I have drunk in a station bar. Shame it's spoilt by the pony-tail guy behind the bar whose attitude to sensitive customers is a bit disappointing. The rest of the staff are very friendly but you do have to wait at busy times.

Worth visiting on a crawl but not the place to finish one due to rigid pub clearance at 11.20

The Camden Eye, Camden

Pub has been cleaned up as patr of a general "cleansing" of the area which is good. It's all helpin to give Camden a better name. Spent a few months in Camden a few years back and the Half Way House as it were then along with the World's End weren't my ideal drinking venues. Now with two real ales includin Deuchars IPA, and later opening hours, that, in my book, is a lot better than it was prior. Feels like a more welcoming place that anyone can go in.

Pubs changed quite a bit. Not been in for a few months. Popped in last week. Unusually tall guy has replaced the unusually short one behind the bar. All the other staff seem new aswell. Milton ales still good. Lighting a bit darker which is nice. Don't think much of their new policy of opening all the doors at 11.15 so you have to rush out the pub feelin uncomfortable. Spoils it a bit if you've been in all evening & enjoyed the beers. Still good pub generally, and nice to see it full of people again.

10/10 last time, 8/10 this time.

The Claret Free House, Addiscombe

As promised 18 months ago, 10/10. Now has DARK STAR HOP HEAD on quite regular. Drunk 4pts last Sat. Now open later than it did in Jan05. Pub much same as it were then. Mixed crowd in here, quite friendly.

The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell

I Stand corrected!

Thanks to Gueuzefan for putting me right here! When I were at the JT last time it was a mate buyin the round in last thing on an 8-pinter Clerkenwell crawl. Still gets 6/10 as the beers are good most of the time. Problm with [this] site is that you can't go back and edit mistakes in your own comment boxes - that would be nice.

The Lower Red Lion, St Albans

With disregard to the banal comments of earlier today. I was here at one of their "festival" nights last month and everyone (of all age-groups and all walks of life) seemed to get on.

Last time I rated the Lower Red I gave it a 10 last year, and think it deserves to keep that mark. And the "anonymous" people who aren't to keen on the pub can always drink somewhere else and leave the Lower Red to those of us who are.

Also I over-heard pub management at the Lower Red read our BITE comments and often act on them.

The Pembury Tavern, Hackney

No food avail - shame there's nowhere decent for eating round there. Could do with a bite to help the beers go down if you are trying out loads of beers from the "permanent festival". Any plans to introduce food?

The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell

Beer does vary a bit. It *IS* real ale - dispensed thru hand pumps etc, but sometimes comes up a bit flat. On a good day & there are many of these its well worth goin in for one or 2 of them but this place just gets too crowded for its own good. Be nice if there was a guest beer like timmy taylors in here. All behind the bar friendly when I were last there but I could not say the pub's cheap.

The Lower Red Lion, St Albans

Lower Red Lion is one of the best pubs I have ever been to. I was there at the beginning of the week and saw nothing but ordinary folk relaxing over a pint and having ordinary conversations with each other. Being a bank holiday weekend, they were hosting a regular beer festival that's bound to draw in ale enthusiasts and camra members. I found them all very friendly and easy to chat with, and know that the place is a lot less crowded on other days.

And don't forget where the pub is, either. St Alban's is camra's birth town so they are quite entitled to keep a good pub with spot-on beers here!

Keep it up, and I suppose congratulations due for being BITE's top pub right now.

The Hereward, Ely

this is the pub that barred a lady of 82 for wearing a hat.

13 Mar 2006 13:58

The Claret Free House, Addiscombe

This is a good pub and worth trekking out to find (next to the Addiscombe tram). Six beers on H'pump, but usually these start from 4% upwards. They could do with having a 3.7 or 3.8 session-ale on permanently there. I'd go more often if there was one, and leave a little more sober!

9/10, will change to 10/10 if this happens!

The Ship of Fools, Croydon

Easy access from West Croydon Station. Cheap beer, cheap "food", the pub represents value for money, but if its atmosphere you want try some of the smaller independent back street pubs in Croydon. It's ok for a quick pint and a bite to eat but I wouldn't spend longer than necessary there. From my only experience there last year, Jeff Sandy is not wrong.

5/10

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

a good pub still, one or 2 punters are a bit odd. a few days ago seen short-haired guy shout at bar staff over "wrong pint" tho nothing wrong with it. this is "our" pub & its gr8 & still wotrh going 2, the beer's good & the music is gr8 @ wknds. Nice staff, & 99% of the regulars are friendly.

The Olde Tavern, Kington

one of the best pubs in the area

28 Oct 2004 01:17

The Priory Arms, Stockwell

Although a bit dearer than other pubs in the area the pricing of the beers is just enough to exclude those Gary and Nickie wouldn't have in their pub, but nothing like the ludicrous 3 you pay in the west end.

Every inch of the Priory is good, down to the very last pint. The food was very reasonable during their beer festival - I'll definitely be going again!

The Star Inn, Lockwood

A real pub.

Fantastic ale and friendly staff & locals make this a perfect, unpretetious pub. Worth going miles out to find it, but if you like real beer you will not be disappointed. 10/10

agree with all comments below. The pub has a gr8 atmosphere and is worth going to especially with all the festivals. The best beers are usually the Church End ones, "scoopers" should ring pub and find out what's on b/4 going - I'm not sure if they have a web sight

The Live and Let Live, Cambridge

An unashamed 10/10 rating comes with this posting

The Oakdale Arms, Harringay
