The New Downsman, Hove

I commented last time I came in 2010.Visted again for a lunchtime meal. Nothing has changed! The food was excellent and the staff were friendly and really helpful. My Father's not in the best of health and they were very helpful with him. A nice friendly family pub.

The Castle Inn, Pegenffordd

Good beer, good food, made to feel welcome.

The Royal Sovereign, Shoreham by Sea

Shocked for two reasons on my last visit
1 Timothy Taylor Landlord no longer sold, my 2nd favorite beer.
2 Price of a pint of Harvey's Sussex has risen from £3.20 to £3.55. Not sure how that could be justified but guess it's an affluent area, supply and demand etc
Apart from that it's a good pub!

The Cliftonville Inn, Hove

Taken my old father in here for breakfast several times. I've given up the cooked stuff, have to watch the waistline! I can recommend the porridge though.
The staff in the morning are friendly and efficient.

The Nags Head, Chichester

Following a disappointing visit in May, we returned. My daughter is local and said she'd had a nice meal there.
The change in the staff was exceptional! Service was excellent and the food was good.
We did think it was a bit pricey, 6 for a desert but the place was full and it's an affluent area. The football crowd watching the widescreen stopped us going to the bar. Had a pint of Summer Lightning and it was good.
Well done for the improvement to service!

The Nags Head, Chichester

Passing through Chichester, stopped at random for a drink and food. Barman was indifferent when I asked if we could sit anywhere. "Wait and a young lady will show you a table" Stood at the bar for 5 minutes and no came. We then saw a sign saying "Wait here to be seated" Two minutes later we were still there and the place only had about 8 diners in. A chap who seemed to be the Chef came up and was friendly, saying that we could sit anywhere. Sitting at the table for 5 minutes, no one came to us so we upped and left.
Had an excellent meal at the India Gate next door. Thoroughly professional staff in there and a good meal but alas, no ales.
Very poor, the Nags Head.

The Red Lion Inn, Shoreham by Sea

Went here at lunchtime for food. It would have been good to be told that there would be a long delay when we ordered. On ordering our second drink, two other people were querying about when their food would arrive. The young barman was indifferent and could do with some customer service training . When our ploughmans arrived, 40 minutes later, they were poor, not worth 7. Won't eat here again althought the beer was fine.

The Red Lion, Walsall

Somethin's happened here since the previous postings! Maybe a change of management. Visiting relatives in Walsall, popped in for one. Only one bitter available. Indifferent barman. Wetherspoons roughest type of clientel were present ie baseball caps and a mad bag lady on cider sat beside me, talking to herself. Best avoided until they get a proper manager in!

The Old Fourpenny Shop Hotel, Warwick

Friendly staff, good range of beers, proper old style pub. Came in a couple of times while visiting Warwick.

The Green Jackets, Shoreham by Sea

Couldn't find fault in the ale or the service. The food, however, is appalling. Not that it's inedible but think 2nd class transport cafe and you have it. One of my pet hates is food served up in microwave dishes. How long would it take to tip it out! The steak pie I had was similar to a Fray Bentos job and was served up like a school dinner. My partner had sausage and mash which a ten year old could have made nicer. Appaling value! Avoid the food!

The Smugglers Return, Worthing

Been here a couple of times to see the excellent band Dirty Shoes. Despite it being busy, bar staff very quick and pleasant. Harvey's Sussex was good.

The Alex, Bognor Regis

Called in here for the first time while visiting my daughter.Lovely traditional pub with a bit of what's missing in a lot of places - character.Friendly barmaid.
Nice pint of Otter. They do food but didn't try. Worth a visit.

The New Downsman, Hove

Agree with concho's comments - great pub. The food is second to none, good honest fodder. The pub is close to the old railway line that ran up to Devil's Dyke.So a walk up to the Dyke and back followed by a few beers makes agreat day out.

The Gardeners Arms, Sompting

Agree with you Petebuddle, excellent pub. Always feel comfortable in there, quiz night is good fun and the Sunday Roast is excellent. Real ales at good prices. Hope they survive, too many proper pubs like this are being killed off.

The Old Thatch Tavern, Stratford Upon Avon

More of a "faux" rustic restaurant than a pub,not to say that's a bad thing. Two real ales on offer.Plus John Smiths Smoothflow - YUCH!
Roast was excellent but a bit pricey. Wouldn't have minded that but the young waitress(and I know it was busy ) practically threw the stuff on the table. Less haste more speed ............. There was no tip for her alas. I'd recommend if you want to eat but maybe better at quieter times.

The Haven House, Christchurch

We were on holiday in the area and the main reason we stopped here was because we were told it was dog friendly. I can confirm that it is and you can eat with your pooch in the bar area.Staff were friendly enough, water was laid on and they gave the pooch some biscuits, nice touch. It was a hot day when we visited, 28 degrees(or 86 in English) so I daren't try the ale or I'd fall asleep in minutes but it looked good! I can recommend the Whitebait

The White Buck, Burley

We were on holiday in the area and the main reason we stopped here was because we were told it was dog friendly. I was a bit doubtful when we arrived as it looks a bit posh from the outside. Can confirm they allow dogs;you can eat with your pooch in the bar area but not the restaurant, which is fair enough. Food was good and they do proper puddings like Spotted Dick!Nice pub feel.Staff were friendly enough and the draught Honeydew was excellent. Water bowl provided for the dog

The Bridge Inn, Shoreham by Sea

Hmm. joebeers comments don't reflect my experience of The Bridge. Since Imogen took over she has transformed the place. Always finds the time to have a chat. The food was ok before but the menu is great now, plenty of variety. Nice touches like candles and sofas. The beers are top notch Fullers and kept well.Best and friendliest pub in the High Street.
