The Millstream, Marden

I also notice that all of the comments previously posted on here have dissapeared - how strange!!

I have visited this pub a couple of times and have always found it to be very poor. The over priced food is mediocre at best, and the extremely odd (and pushy)landlady does the place no favours. I really would not bother with this place - get a new landlady and I will try again, but not before, she really is not very pleasant and her character seems to have overwhelmed what could otherwise be a lovely village pub - what a shame.

Waggon & Horses, Beckhampton

A really good local pub, I count myself lucky to have moved close to this pub recently. Very good 6X kept in wooden casks behind the bar. Excellent, good old fashioned pub food too - they do all the good old classics that pubs should - not too pricey or overdone, just good steaks, pies, curries etc. Very pleasant ambience, a bit quirky and very attractive. An old haunt of Charles Dickens, very close to Avebury and Silbury Hill - a great spot, give it a try.

The Rutland Arms, Woolsthorpe By Belvoir

Quite a nice place, in a very pleasant situation by the side of a lock on the now defunct Grantham canal. As I say, quite nice, but not a patch on The Chequers in the village of Woolsthorpe - The Rutland Arms is about half a mile out of the village towards Allington and Sedgebroke

The Chequers, Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir

An upmarket, but very friendly and unpretentious pub in a delightful Lincolnshire village, nestling half a mile or so below the impresive turrets and ramparts of Belvoir Castle. The food here is seriously good, an interesting and varied menu that seems to have a good selection of inovative daily specials. Lovely log fires in the winter, the one in the main bar is presided over by a magnificent stuffed wild boars head! There are lots of beams and plenty of character in this delightful and atmospheric old building. A really good pub with good food and beer, give it a go if you are in the area, I don't think you will be dissappointed.

The Pot Kiln, Frilsham

Pretty mediocre. We watched the transformation of this place on the TV with interest and have since visited - not all that impressed. A very small jacket potato in the bar with a bit of cheddar over it was a ridiculous amount of money. The celebrity proprietor was to be seen swaning about in his chef's whites chatting up all the punters from Reading and Newbury, and generaly being rather too pleased with himself. The beer from next door is good. I suspect that this is another case of a good, quiet old country pub being sacrificed on the alter of 'the gastropub' - not for me thanks. Get off your high horse Mike and cook some good, afordable food and offer it in the sort of portion sizes that country people expect, we are not all lily-livered townies from Reading!!

The Swan on the Green, West Peckham

A delightful and architypal English village pub. We had a really good lunch here, sitting watching the cricket on the green - how much more English can one get? The pub brews it's own excellent beers and does very good and imaginative food. The village of West Peckham is lovely, the setting of the pub on the village green and next to the church could not be improved on.

The Albany, Thames Ditton

Not a bad pub, with out doubt it does so well due to it's location - on the Thames looking over the water to Hampton Court. The food is good, service satisfactory, the problem is that they try to do too much. Rather than try and serve half of London on a bank holiday, why not be sensible and take bookings only, so that those who bother to book enjoy good service and not the rather chaotic and rushed service that the popularity of this establishment leads to without any kind of restriction on numbers eating. The result is an overcrowded dinning room and pleasant, but terribly rushed serving staff. Perhaps more waiting staff and kitchen staff would ease the problem. For all this, the Albany is reasonable, sensible prices and good food. Not a place for a quiet pint on a sunny summer weekend, the place absolutely HEAVES!!

The Rattlebone Inn and Restaurant, Sherston

Good food, good beer. This is a very pleasant boozer in a very pleasant village - has a degree of notoriety, its where youg Harry was busted doing something very naughty!! Highgrove is just up the road!

The Flowerpots Inn, Cheriton

This really is a great pub. The winning combination of a good selection of home brewed beers and good food is hard to beat. Situated in a delightful part of the world. We had delicious steak rolls sitting next to the fire, they were excellent, as was the beer. The interior of the pub is very pleasant, lots of nice old pictures and prints, certainly worth a visit.

The Salisbury Tavern, Fulham

The only time we ate here my wife ( who had one glass of wine) suffered from severe food poisoning. We contacted the pub to complain as we had spent about 70 and they could not have cared less. Potentially a good pub ruined by mediocre food and extremely unfriendly management. For the money I can think of many much better places in this part of London.

The Phene Arms, Chelsea

A very pleasant Chelsea boozer for a reasonably quiet pint. The pub is tucked away from the Kings Rd, so not too much passing trade, only those who are 'in the know' about this excellent place and locals. Lovely for a bit of people watching in the beer garden on a warm summer evening.I think the new decoration inside is quite stylish!

Henry J Beans, Chelsea

Not bad for a quick and reasonably cheap pint and burger at lunchtime, but wouldn't spend too much time here. It is terribly noisy and certainly not a place to linger and enjoy a quiet pint - beer pretty ordinary. The very loud TV / music is horrid.Staff fairly unimpressive

The Tunnel House Inn and Barn, Coates

A marvelous quirky country pub at the end of a dirt track set above a tunnel on the old Thames-Severn canal. The place is in a wonderful setting with a good garden. Very popular with locals and students from the near by Royal Agricultural College. Friendly staff, good food and interesting beer. This place is a gem

The Grapes, Limehouse

A splendid boozer, set in a wonderful old Thames side house that is quite literaly out of Dickens - 'Our Mutual Friend', one could almost imagine Gaffer Hexham or Rogue Riderhood sitting by the fire nursing a pint of porter!! Excellent fish menu - very good fish and chips and Arnold Bennett omlette, along with a very pleasant couple of pints of Bass were enjoyed. The really attentive bar maid was very helpful and friendly. There was a very silly but lovely dog in residence too! On a warm day sitting on the front terrace over the river with a good pint is highly recomended!

The Ship Inn, Wandsworth

A real star amoung south west London boozers, excellent beer, likewise food - the bbq is a good bet for a cheap snack to soak up the beer! Quirky decoration inside that really works, good outside beer garden that fronts onto the Thames - pretty hectic on sunny summer weekends. Certainly give it a go.

The White Horse, Parsons Green

This is still a good boozer, but nothing compared to the halcyon days in the late 80's and 90's when the Horse was under the iron like stewardship of the wonderful Sally Cruikshank - a marvelous, if a little frightening woman with a gaze that could stop a charging bull! Woe betide anyone who upset Sally - anyone remember the Wednesday night jazz band? Ah, happy days. With regard to all those chippy people who do not like the fact that the Horse is full of sloanes, don't drink in this part of Fulham. This area is still a strong bastion of sloane-rangerdom, and not likely to change, perhaps you would all be happier in Islington!

The Kimberley Inn, Findhorn

As a southerner from London I was thrilled to find this marvelous boozer in the north of Scotland - as all familiar with the area will know, this part of the world is not overflowing with good places to eat and drink - look no further than this establishment. A very pleasant place inside, overlooking the beautiful Findhorn Bay - tables outside for summer. The food here is excellent, certainly the best for miles around in its league. We had superb fish and chips. If you are in the area certainly give The Kimberley a visit. We last went there on New Years day and predictably it was very busy, but the staff were on top of things and service was speedy and friendly.

Marquis Of Granby, Waltham On The Wolds

I have known this pub for 20 years and have seen it go through the high days of the 80's under the stewardship of the late Barry Garrigan and then into the doldrums of the 90's under a series of landlords who did not make much effort. I called in recently and at long last it has had a make-over and looks good again. The new landlord seems keen and the beer not bad, certainly give it a try.

The Sun Inn, Barnes

I am surprised to read some of the negative comments about The Sun, we always get good service here, even down to a bowl of water for our dogs if we bring them to the beer garden. Very good beer and food (if a bit expensive - hey, this is Barnes though!)Pleasant decoration inside and attentive staff. Give it a try.

The Plough, East Sheen

A good place for a Sunday morning pint after a stomp around Richmond Park. Very pleasant inside and out, feels quite like a country pub inside. I didn't try it, but the Sunday lunch that I saw people eating looked good. Enjoyed a very good pint of Bass. Certainly worth a try.

The Fox and Hounds, Battersea

A splendid boozer! Superb food that comes in very healthy portions, excellent and well kept beer and a comprehensive wine list featuring lots of new worlds. A very sunny beer garden at rear for the summer or lovely fires inside in the winter, absolutely worth a visit - understandably busy at weekends
