Ned Kellys, Liverpool

Reopened by the same group who have the Richmond and Lord Warden. Typical of their design, it's modern, open plan. Clean and fresh with plenty of light coming in through the panoramic windows. Couple of good real ales on-I has the Southport.

The Rope and Anchor, Dunham Massey

This pub has been ruined by the supposed makeover. What was a welcoming, country local is now a sterile "gastropub". Large TVs and sofas dominate in place of the traditional fittings. Good value homecooked food has been replaced by expensive, posey nosh.

The Royal Hotel, Great Harwood

Currently up for sale

The Crown, Bury

The Royal Oak, Ramsbottom

Yes this has had a makeover and is now the "Oaks". Very much improved and now has a contemporary, comfortable interior. Good selection of Thwaites cask ales and sometimes a guest ale. Unusually for a Thwaites pub, it also has a good selection of bottled foreign beers. Food is also available.

22 Feb 2011 11:35

The Railway, Ramsbottom

This pub has really slipped down the rankings over the years. It hasn't been good for awhile, but it's sunk to a new low under the new licensee. No real ale available despite pumps showing, rowdy under age drinkers and groups of people sat outside smoking weed. Avoid.

22 Feb 2011 11:32

The Crosse Keys, Bank

Impressive building although too dimly lit frankly which makes it a little gloomy. Usually has a good choice of beers on with the exception of Saturday. They are obviously winding down for closing and the beer range is often substantially reduced.

The Met, Sale

Have to agree with the last comment. It wasn't always full of scallies-that came alter as it lost its family appeal. I fear however that it is finished as a pub.

27 Jul 2010 12:50

The Grapes, Bury

Closed.

28 May 2010 19:09

The Spotted Cow (the Spot), Bury

A terrible dive. Stay well clear. Makes the Church Inn look good, though

28 May 2010 19:07

The Brown Cow, Bury

Can I point out to the other reviewers that this is NOT the Brown Cow at Burrs Country Park. That is on Woodhill Road. This is the Brown Cow on Rochdale Old Road.

28 May 2010 11:14

The Waggon and Horses, Bury

Rubbish beer and dodgy clientele make this one to avoid unless you are local.

21 Sep 2009 20:05

The Towler Inn, Bury

Smart, modern pub with friendly locals and a good place to watch the footie. Golden Pippin is usually in excellent form.

21 Sep 2009 20:04

The New Inn, Bury

No cask for years and very dull inside.

21 Sep 2009 20:02

Hark To Dandler, Bury

Much improved and now selling good JW Lees

21 Sep 2009 20:00

The Masons Arms, Bury

Small and cosy it now sells Bank Top Flat Cap. Major plus point is the Indian restaurant upstairs where you can get drinks from the pub brought up.

21 Sep 2009 19:59

The Lord Raglan, Nangreaves

Nice looking country pub that sells its own Leyden beer. However, beer is very dull and overpriced for what is basically homebrew. Service is pretty ropey amd the food, despite the setting, is average. The nearby Mason's or Dandler are better for food and the excellent Fisherman's isn't far away.

21 Sep 2009 19:56

Waterfold Farm, Bury

Now selling Copper Dragon. Family/female freindly modern build with large car park. a bit isolated but good for a night out.

21 Sep 2009 19:53

The Peele Hotel, Bury

Poor beer and a very rough clientele make this one to avoid.

21 Sep 2009 19:50

The Crown, Bury

Like most of Rochdale Road, this is rough.

21 Sep 2009 19:49

The Rose and Crown, Bury

Terrible. For many years was one of the best, if not the best, pub in Bury. Under the current management beer quality is shocking, opening hours have been reduced and the whole place lacks atmosphere.

21 Sep 2009 19:47

The Oddfellows Arms, Bury

Not a Holts pub, but does serve Holts Bitter.

10 Sep 2009 23:20

The Queens Head, Stockport

Disappointing on my recent visit. Not a woman in the place and beer quality was poor.

7 Sep 2009 18:57

Hare & Hounds, Ramsbottom

The best pub in Bury-simple as that. 10 real ales and food all day. Landlord is very knowledgeable and holds beer festivals throughout the year. Beer garden at rear.

31 Aug 2009 08:39

Rose and Crown, Ramsbottom

Smart and cosy Thwaites pub serving a number of their real ales.

31 Aug 2009 08:36

The Good Samaritan, Ramsbottom

Under temporary management. Much quieter than it used to be but the landlord still maintains the real ale and the Golden Pippin is nearly always in good form. Sky Sports.

31 Aug 2009 08:35

The Railway, Ramsbottom

Very disappointing. Quite smart and has a lovely patio area but the real ale is often not on or in poor condition.

31 Aug 2009 08:32

Masons Arms, Ramsbottom

Ok pub still serving cask Thwaites

31 Aug 2009 08:30

The Major Hotel, Ramsbottom

Very good pub-much improved under current landlord. Friendly staff and several real ales, often from Cumbria make this one of the best in Ramsbottom, if not Bury. The food is excellent homemade stuff at very reasonable prices. Small outdoor drinking area at back.

31 Aug 2009 08:29

First Chop, Ramsbottom

Excellent addition to the Ramsbottom scene. Small, contemporary bar serving three real ales, often from local micros and a good range of foreign beer, wine and spirits. Gets very busy at weekends with diners enjoying the excellent food.

31 Aug 2009 08:26

The Royal Hotel, Tottington

Much improved and is now trying to serve up to three real ales. Unfortunately they're not always on but thr landlord is keen and trying hard with his limited guest list.

31 Aug 2009 08:22

The Lamb Inn, Bury

Excellent, cosy pub that serves George Wright and, at weekends, a guest beer.

19 Aug 2009 14:35

Wyldes, Bury

Big Holts pub in town centre. Can be pleasant in day and early evening. One to avoid at weekends as it's usually packed and has bouncers on. Beer is Mild and Bitter which is usually ok but does vary a little.

18 Aug 2009 20:55

Lilys Bar, Bury

18 Aug 2009 20:52

The Liquid Lounge, Bury

18 Aug 2009 20:51

The Brandleshome, Bury

Demolished to make way for housing.

16 Aug 2009 18:44

The Arthur Inn, Bury

Sold and no longer a pub

16 Aug 2009 18:42

The Smithfield Hotel, Manchester

Over rated pub in Manchester's N1/4. There are several real ales on offer but quality varies and the choice isn't always great. Depressing atmosphere inside and smoking still goes on after hours. Not a patch on its glory days under Jenny.

16 Aug 2009 14:15

The Clarence Hotel, Bury

Been closed for some time.

16 Aug 2009 14:07

The Two Tubs Inn, Bury

Bury's oldest pub but the modernisation has ruined the character. Beer quality is generally poor and tends to attract mature tramps during the week. At weekends, it's a different story as the late licence means it's one for the kids.

16 Aug 2009 14:06

The Robert Peel, Bury

Scruffy but not really rough Wetherspoons. Service varies as does the quality of the beer. Can be ok on its best day but sometimes there are no guest ales available. Improved somewhat since Chris, the longtime manager, moved on.

16 Aug 2009 14:02

Ronnies On The Rock, Bury

Renmaed yet again but still one of the worst places in Bury. Dismal decor and full of very sad people who don't know any better. Can get pretty rough.

16 Aug 2009 13:58

Automatic, Bury

Easily the best bar in Bury. Comfortable and contemporary it offers decent food and a good choice of drinks. Even better since they started selling real ales.

16 Aug 2009 13:56

Yates's, Bury

Smelly, dirty and full of the old drunks who can't get in anywhere else. Use to open late but now thay can't wait to shut the doors at 11-sometimes before.

16 Aug 2009 09:34

The Art Picture House, Bury

Closed and bought by Wetherspoons.

16 Aug 2009 09:31

The George (Beer Engine), Bury

Closed and due to reopen as a card shop.

16 Aug 2009 09:28

The Eagle, Hoxton

Disappointing pub. Scruffy and the mix of furniture inside doesn't suit it. Most importantly the beer range is very pedestrian-on my last visit on Sunday it just had beers such as Black Sheep and Deuchars.

12 Aug 2009 14:59

The Charles Lamb, Angel, Islington

Excellent pub that is rightly considered one of the best in London. Smart and cosy, there is a pleasant atmosphere and the place is woman/family friendly. Good menu-not serving after 6 on A Sunday is hardly relevant to whether it's any good. Three beers on bar with Darkstar Hophead now a regular. Prices reasonable for the area.
