The Black Dog, Whitstable

What a great micro-pub. The beer was well kept and a good range was available from a mild to some very pleasant IPA's. Even if you are not a confirmed real ale fan you should visit this place for the decor. So much to see with a wicked sense of humour on the Gothic side of things. Every time I have been there with the wife or friends somebody always starts a conversation. It couldn't be more welcoming and.... again.... the beer is terrific. Given the many other brilliant pubs in Whitstable this one is my favourite. Can't wait for the winter and the real fire. Led Zeppelin fans will particularly like it here.

Comment: Time for a well deserved update. Fullers now putting guest ales on (some not from their own brewery) and the toilets have been refurbished. New staff at the bar make sure you get a good pint but the only thing holding the score back is the small garden at the rear but that cant be helped.
Still the best pub in Caterham

Comment: The last of the Caterham pubs Ive visited and what a place. Decor fine but the people and the beer are a bit ropey. As per most of the other reviews on your site I agree this is not a place to visit twice. I hear the people here ran the Clifton which was a nice pub, sadly gone now but I cant see that this can be true as the landlord of the Clifton was damn good.

Comment: London Pride is OK but no real choice of ale although the lager is well kept liked by the regulars as it is a change from the other nearby pubs. Some have described the pub and the locals as rough and ready but this is a good local boozer and despite what you may be told elsewhere this is the OLDEST PUB in Caterham not the converted cottages opposite. There is live music regularly and they are a good bunch of regulars here. Pool table.

Comment: Nice beer and a really nice pub sort of out of the way but a great place to stop if you are driving between Purley and Caterham on the Hill. (Long drive and that 3 miles can really take it out of you). Although you are really in an urban area you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. I hear (and saw) that the food is really great if thats what you use a pub for but personally the beer does it for me.

Comment: Huge range of lagers and more importantly Adnams Broadside whoo hoo. Large pub, well maintained and very comfortable but despite the high scores there is something missing. It might be that there were no apparent locals or any sign that there is a regular crowd here and despite them serving my favourite beer EVER I prefer my local that only scores a total of 6. Weird.

Comment: Shepherd Neame Whitstable Bay and Kents Best plus Harveys Best on offer as well as good range of Lager and cider. The pub garden is the beach so .......... sat on the beach with the wife, chatting to lady who was a local, and a regular in the pub, while drinking good ale and watching the tide going out on a sunny day. What could be better for a first visit apart from getting even with the H & S git who ordered the plastic pots - but at least they were filled to the top by the lady who served me who seemed very pleasant. Cant wait til our next visit.

This is now a hole in the ground. You can join the family that ran this madhouse for real ale and the local (illegal) grafitti artist (their grandson) at the Golden Clifton oops that's the Golden Lion.

Comment: Big pub, not many in at lunchtime but the service .... slow is an understatement. Of the 3 pints ordered, 1 was full, 1 was short but the last was very low. When asked to top up the 2 shorties we got a stare and a reluctant top up, on the very low pint ........ to low. Garden was huge and great seeing the planes from Biggin Hill taking off but there is no excuse for short measure.

Comment: Skinners, Westerham and Caledonian with a choice of lager including Oranjeboom. Friendly people both sides of the bar and a large garden at rear which was a big surprise given the location. Although the Skinners was past its best it was swiftly replaced (without any fuss) with a Westerham that was rather pleasant.

Comment: We were looking for a nice Sunday lunchtime pint & this looked like a nice pub and it had a Cask Marque. Inside the pub every corner was filled with diners hunched over bar tables with 4 people at the bar with only one person serving. 3 hand pumps but one beer was off and only Doombar and London Pride were on offer. After waiting 10 minutes and with 3 people still in the queue we left. The 3* are a base line estimate. I will try here again. Ho Hum off to Outwood for a beer then.

Comment: Only Hall and Woodhouse Badger and Hare on offer 24/6/12. Sunday lunch trade filled the cramped restaurant area but there was a very pleasant garden with large pond where there were fewer children underfoot. Unfortunately the Badger was very ordinary and the range of beers on offer was nothing like this pub used to do in its heyday. I miss the Tanglefoot.

Comment: Was passing by and remembered drinking here years ago so we popped in. Doombar, British Bulldog and... best of all, Adnams bitter. The beer was well kept and the bar staff were nice. Will be coming here again after the Polhill shopping is done to chill out in the well kept garden.

Comment: Nice country pub especially on a sunny day and the range of beers is excellent with some nice unusual ones. Beer always well kept and they run beer festivals a couple of times a year which rival the local CAMRA festival. Best Caterham pub? A bit far out to include in a crawl I think, but with their range just crawl their bar.
