Wainwrights Inn, Great Langdale

Several beers to choose from - three Jennings plus four others of which I tried Kirby Lonsdale Stanley's and Hawkshead Bitter. Both were in reasonable condition, but I found it a bit strange that all four of the guest beers were 3.7% or 3.8% in strength - you would expect more variety. Food was ok but nothing special. Staff were friendly and service was good. It filled up quickly on the Friday night that we were there and you need to get there early to get a table if you are eating

The Britannia Inn, Elterwater

Wonderful pub. Friendly staff and great atmosphere in the small bar. Six or seven beers on - all well kept. Eden Gold and Legendary Langdale were particularly good. We had lunch once and enjoyed cumberland sausage rolls. Evening meals looked very good.

Sticklebarn, Great Langdale

Had lunch here twice during a week long stay in Chapel Stile. The smoked cheddar ploughman's was very good - plenty of cheese and nice quality bread. Six beers on - the Barngates Tag Lag and Keswick Thirst Session were both fine. Friendly staff and prompt service. Enjoyed sitting by the fire. A good experience

The Kirkstile Inn, Loweswater

Arrived for lunch on Thursday 26th to find it was the start of their three day beer festival, so the choice of beers was expanded to about twenty or more. However, I still tried two of the Cumbrian Legendary beers (brewery used to be at the pub and now at Esthwaite Water). Both the Esthwaite Bitter and Pacific Voyage were very very good . Our lunches were excellent . Very friendly atmosphere and, as others have mentioned, a superb location. A great pub

The Three Tuns, Bishops Castle

Seven of us had a very enjoyable lunch stop on a circular walk from Wentnor. Clerics Cure, 1642, XXX and Stout were all tried by various members of the party and all declared very fine. The food was good and service friendly. Marvellous place.

White Horse Inn, Clun

Seven of us had lunch here on a walking trip on Good Friday. Six or seven beers on, including a mild from Hobsons. That and the Salopian Shropshire Gold that I tried were in great condition. A good choice of food , including a selection of salads , and everyone was very pleased with their meals, which were reasonable priced as well. Nice atmosphere - the staff even introduced us to the local crossword expert to help us out! Very friendly, great village pub.

The Crown Inn, Wentnor

A group of us stayed here for two nights before Easter on a walking trip. New owners took over early this year , but myndman's positive comments still stand and more. The rooms are comfortable and nicely done. Breakfast was excellent - nothing seemed to be too much trouble (the porridge got rave reviews) The food menu has plenty of choice and the home-made pies are particularly good. Helpings are generous and plenty of fresh veg is available. As for beer, they had Best and Old Henry from Hobsons and one from each of the Bishops Castle microbreweries - XXX from the Three Tuns and Supper from the Six Bells. All were tried during our stay and all were in excellent condition. With regards to pricing, rooms , food and drink were all extremely good value. The pub is clearly a real hub of the community, has a great atmosphere and is situated on a hill with marvellous views of the Long Mynd (made more picturesque by the pre-Easter snow when we were there).

The owners and staff are friendly , helpful and flexible - this is a real local that is a great place to stay, eat or just have a drink. We would definitely return to do all three. It gets a very high rating on the basis of our stay.

The Rugglestone Inn, Widecombe in the Moor

A gem. The Teignworthy Rugglestone Moor (on gravity) was glorious, on top of which they had one of my favourite meals , chicken and chorizo casserole, on the menu. Served with a good salad and garlic bread, it did not disappoint.

Fortescue Arms, East Allington

A lovely find. Four of us enjoyed dinner on the Saturday night after New Year at the Fortesque Arms. A varied menu offered plenty of choice and the quality was excellent. My daughter described her steak as one of the best she had tasted. We tried the two Dartmoor ales that were on - Legend and Dragon's Breath - and they were both in great condition (if my memory is correct, they also had Doom Bar on). The service was attentive, but friendly and they were happy to let us use the lounge area , with a nice fire going, even though we had a dog with us. All in all , a very enjoyable experience and one we would look to repeat when we next visit the area.

The Journeys End Inn, Ringmore

What a great pub. Four of us had a very enjoyable lunch after walking the dog on Bigbury beach on the Saturday after New Year. The food was excellent - three of us had the chicken, winter vegetables and spring onion soup and it was a meal in itself, with good chunks of chicken breast and good quality vegetables. My daughter had the fish and chips and was very happy with her choice. For ales, Sharps Doom Bar and Teignworthu Old Moggie were available on gravity and both were very fine. A lovely bar with the fire on at one end, and they are very dog friendly. Service was very good, but friendly. The family who now run the pub have been there about a year now and are doing a great job. We will definitely be back when we visit the area again and would not hesitate to recommend this pub to others

The George Inn, Blackawton

Mousefan's observations still hold good. My wife, daughter and daughters boyfriend and I had a very enjoyable Friday evening in the George , the week after New Year. Very friendly in both bars and relaxed, but the service and quality of food was excellent. We were spoilt for choice with the menu, but all dishes were very much enjoyed. The lad behind the bar was friendly and helpful, but efficient as well. As for ales, I tried the Hunters Gold and Teignworthy Springtide, both of which were excellent. No problem taking our dog in either. We would definitely visit again

Royal Oak, Car Colston

Very well run and friendly pub. Despite being very busy, service was quick, friendly and never offhand. The menu has a very good choice and the helpings are generous, but not at the expense of quality. Two of our group had the roast beef Sunday lunch, while I had the lamb's liver. All very good. Four real ales on - Marston's, Jennings Cumberland, Ringwood Best and Wychwood Hobgoblin. I had the last two and they were very fine (as you would expect from the CAMRA Pub of the Year for the area). All in all a very enjoyable experience and I would not hesitate to recommend this pub.

The Hampshire Bowman, Dundridge

Visted this pub today for the first time. Can only say that this is a treasure! All the beers are on gravity. I tried the Bowmans Swift One and the Oakleaf Naptu Ale - both were excellent. The food was good quality and big portions. I can't undersatnd some of the previous review points about high prices - I have not come across many pubs recemtly with so many dishes under (and well under) 10 and the beers were reasonable at 2.80. Service was efficient and friendly. Will definitely be looking for any excuse to get back there, even if it is an hour's drive away.

The Old Crown, Uley

Stayed here in June for a week-end. Great old pub, with two Uley Brewery beers from a couple of hundred yards up the road, plus four others, of which three rotate. All were excellent. Food was very fine and good value. Our room could of done with a bit of updating, but was clean and comfortable and when you take into account the excellent breakfast, B&B was very good value for money. The landlord is excellent - helpful and flexible (if you want to mix breakfast options, for example). Very convenient for the Cotswold Way. We would definitely return

The Nobody Inn, Doddiscombsleigh

Enjoyed a very good Sunday lunch back in October. Nice atmosphere and they seem to have achieved a good balance between the eating side and retaining a pub feel. Staff were friendly and helpful and the service was fine, despite being pretty busy. The Cottage Southern Bitter was very fine indeed - they appear keen to support local small breweries. Will definitely go back if the chance arises.

The Old Fire House, Exeter

Thoroughly recommended. My eldest started at the local Uni this year and took us for lunch there recently. Very reasonably priced food and good quality. My wife's ploughman' came with good sized portions of local ham and cheese, plenty of fresh bread and a good salad. Our cods were good quality fish. The prices came out to under 6 per head and the service very prompt, despite being pretty full and with some large parties upstairs on Xmas events! The menu is pretty extensive as well.

The beers are excellently kept and served on gravity from the cask behind the bar. I enjoyed excellent pints of Yeovil Star Gazer and Cotleigh Golden Sea Hawk - the emphasis is on local ales. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the atmosphere, with candles on tables, very pleasant. While it is popular with the students, it seems to work for older generations as well - I will definitely be returning and don't hesitate to give this 9/10

The Black Swan, Martyr's Green

Like others, I remember the Black Swan when it was a traditional pub - in my early beer drinking years it was reknowned for selling Theakston's Old Peculiar on handpump. The current version is totally different and has to be assessed as such. I have been for a meal on three occassions in the last six months, and all have been very good, although the usual Surrey gripe about prices applies. They sell well-kept ales, with a reasonable selection. If you are looking for a good "local" type pub for drinking in, this is probably not for you. If you are looking for somewhere for a good meal with the added bonus , for example, of being asked if you would like your pint of Shere Drop poured straight from the cask (as happened to me), then I would suggest you give this a try and make up your own mind. I would recommend it as a very good eating place for people who like the option of a good pint with their meal
