The Crown Inn, Theale

Tried the Crown again recently, and it seems to be the most improved pub in the village by some distance.

When I called in around Xmas, they had the excellent West Berkshire Brewery's Good Old Boy still on draught, as well as Timothy Taylor's Landlord, a very fine, pale hoppy ale. Both very nice.

The pub had had a thorough facelift since the new people arrived, and is far more welcoming and homely than it used to be. There is now a Chinese takeaway attached to the place, and the landlord seems very keen to try new things.

My view is that this is the best pub in Theale, along with the Volunteer.

Hinds Head, Aldermaston

I'm genuinely puzzled by some of the reviews on here. Perhaps the pub is under new management?

We've eaten there 3 times in the last 6 months and have found the food to be top class. My wife fancies herself as a bit of a foodie and after our first visit, she insisted we revisit with some friends, and had another really good evening.

We also have been there with elderly in-laws for Sunday lunch, and again were very impressed with the food quality, the presentation. and service.

I would strongly suggest pepole give it a go rather than be out off by the reviews. We'll certainly be going back.

The Lamb, Theale

This is my least favourite pub in the village. The landlord can be quite rude, and the beer is poor. I can think of little good to say about it except that the beer is quite cheap and they have a big Sky screen if that's your thing. But I find it a little cliquey and unwelcoming.

The Volunteer, Theale

All things considered, the best pub in Theale if you're a slightly up-market drinker like me.

The beer is significantly pricier than elsewhere, so the village ruffians tend not to show their faces here. The food is excellent, and the bar staff are very proficient, if not particularly friendly. The Fullers beer is always in tip-top nick.

Recommended.

The Falcon, Theale

The place to be seen while waiting for your Chinese takeaway...

An OK pub, with slightly questionable real ale.

The Red Lion, Theale

A decent boozer. Usually have a couple of good beers on including Marstons Pedigree and a guest or two. I think they were doing Deuchar's last time I was in.

They have music sometimes on a Friday or Sat, so can get very busy.

Recommended.

The Crown Inn, Theale

Beer enthusisasts should support the Crown for selling the excellent West Berkshire Brewery's "Good Old Boy".

The pub itself is OK, depending on who's in at the time. It's a good place for watching football, and it's normally pretty busy and lively, especially later on in the evening. Decor is a bit 1980s.
