The Brown Cow, Horwich

To be fair, even if I don't go that often the beer has been fine when I do, and it is proper real ale. Best pub? Probably not, but if you're into pool, reasonable real ale and an older clientele it's definitely worth a look.

The Bowling Green, Horwich

Still keeping up its consistent high standard. Top quality beer and prices. Good mixed crowd. Cute and attentive bar staff. They even have mild on now, although by the time I'm old enough to consider drinking that, we'll all probably be drinking syntha-hol on Mars.

Original Bay Horse, Horwich

Decidedly average. In the space of a year it's gone from a deserved entry in the Real Ale guide to some people considering buying keg, bottled or *shudder* lager instead! The beer isn't off - it's just very poor. The chav element has reduced a bit of late, but unless the beer and atmosphere improves quickly the Bowling Green will be a better bet, despite the noise and chav ratio.

The Bowling Green, Horwich

A sizable improvement. Actually open at sensible hours, cheap, good quality beer.

Unfortunately as a result it's generally packed, loud and a bit chav heavy. I suppose you can't have everything..

The Waterhouse, Manchester

For a chain pub, it's remarkably good. The food isn't amazing, but for the price is decent. The cask beers are cheap and tasty. The atmosphere is good, it's not too loud, and there are lots of little nooks and crannies in which to chat with others.

The Crown Hotel, Standish

Excellent food and real ale. Decent surroundings, and pleasant terrace. Just outside Standish on the edge of the countryside - well worth a visit.

Wizzard has it bang on. The decor is ok, but the locals are very local..

Still one of Horwich's best. Decent beer. Landlady is a welcome character. Both male and female bar staff are cute, bright and bountiful.

It's a nice pub - properly refitted, beer is good. The variable opening times seem to have improved a bit recently, but it's a pity they're restricting cask beer to weekends.

Original Bay Horse, Horwich

Probably the best pub in Horwich. Despite the slightly interesting taste in decoration and DIY skills in evidence, there's always a few quality cask beers including Landlord and Lees.

Friendly locals, decent pool table and jukebox. It's packed on a Friday night and the bar staff are (mostly) excellent. Bit overobsessed with football, but that's a feature of many Bolton pubs.

The Crown Hotel, Horwich

Nice, spacious pub if you're happy with an older clientele. Decent beer and decor. Good prices. Not exactly the most buzzing pub in Horwich, but then again it's not aimed at that market.

Bridge Inn, Horwich

Lively pub (at the weekend - pleasantly quiet at other times) with nice decor - definitely one you could take your parents to. Cask beer is a bit variable despite the supposed 'cask marque' award - I tend to stick to lager here. Proper pool and billiards tables too.

Albert Arms, Horwich

Loud, not particularly cheap. Generally inhabited by 18 year olds - mostly chavs, or 70 year olds, with nothing inbetween.

Sam's Bar, Horwich

Cheap and cheerful. Smoothflow beer perfectly drinkable - for the price you can hardly complain. Only criticism would be the lack of standing room on a Friday!
