The Malt and Hops, Taunton

Recently made over as poorly conceived Irish pub ( in Somerset Ffs )
Apart from that its a welcome change to find a decent clean pub serving a good selection of real less and other drink brands.
Comfortable seating. Darts. & pool.
Good luck to the landlords who have saved it from oblivion.
Deserves support from East Taunton .

The Commercial Inn, Plymouth

Beautifully kept little pub with a charming old landlord and a decent pint of summerskills ale.
plush comfy seats and interesting naval decor.
a good place for a quiet beer or two but lacking any real pubby atmosphere.
It was a bit like sitting in the landlords front room affable though he is.
Definitely worth visiting when its open as its certainly a dying breed.

The Dolphin, Plymouth

Oh My Gawd !
what a pub !
Plenty of real ales and some real "characters".
Generally R.A.F if you like that sort of place.
Like something out of a pirate film.
step over the bodies look no- one in the eye and wipe your feet on the way out
not many of these places left Un/fortunately?
Enjoy

Maritime Inn, Plymouth

Loud, boozy &bawdy when we called in last Saturday.
Perhaps less so on weekdays and probably a good spot for a civilsed beer at lunchtime.
Its certainly got good beers and a realism that some of its other overdeveloped
neighbours lack.
One of the barbicans more mature pubs perhaps .

The Minerva Inn, Plymouth

We always try to visit this charming old pub.And I meen olde(16thC)
Several tidy ales and ciders all expertly served.
As others have commented its very small, cosy and friendly. You do get the occasional drunk but the staff know the score and deal with them.
The ceiling has recently had a controversial repaint so now has space for more wittisisms (proceeds to RNLI) So if you're a fan of real ale and REAL pubs its legendary and unmissable !

Kitty O'Hanlans, Plymouth

Really atmospheric pub off the tourist map between centre and barbican.
Good old "Irish" boozer with good ales interesting decor and efficient bar staff who know what they're doing.
Bands most weekends and we called in both nights during our weekend visit.
It's a bit hardcore and Im sure it gets a little rowdy at times so timid couples and girly girls should beware.
We loved its atmosphere so will return.

The Mount Pleasant, Plymouth

Similar to last review .
Nicely refurbished old pub, good ales, friendly staff very few customers when we dropped by. Live music too .... so what's not to like ? ..... its location is rather strange but there's some nearby hotels and offices and its between the king William area and the Hoe if on foot so give it a go!
They deserve your custom for the obvious effort alone .

The Princess Royal, Taunton

Perfectly fine pub. Always good selection of ales (Tribute, Trelawny,Doombar) all well kept and always a cheery welcome. Nice beergarden in Summer. Often host to parties and functions. Food at luchtimes looks ok and pub has skittle ally & pool table.
Just off the main street with plenty of parking. One of Taunton's finest .

The Plough Inn, Taunton

Cracking atmosphere always some interesting people in here. Prices keep the chavs away and even the bar staff seem public school. Someone must know what they're doing as it's ALWAYS a good pint with plenty of choice.
Bar snacks are good (of pricey) and pie & mash food Ditto.
A real character pub in a central superpub ghetto.
Handy for the Railway station & cricket ground too.
Keep it up fellas...
Oh and the manky looking poodle on the bar is sweet & lovable too.

Ring of Bells, Taunton

In danger of going REALLY down Hill if they keep letting that scruffy few spoil an otherwise lovely pub. The beer's not cheap tho' always excellent but the staff seem more disinterested than when 1st reopened.
I love the decor and the beer garden but when they have a band theystick em in the back room so the only way to see them is to block the gangway to the garden& toilets! Why not next to the main bar just inside the door, much more sociable.
If they don't expel the ruffians then the rest of us will unfortunately stay away at theirprices....:-( here's hoping they get a grip soon.... As its potentially a great pub!

Oxford Inn, Taunton

Well done Wyndham!
Formerly a no go pub of Taunton. Now very well run by Welsh couple who know how to run a pub well. Friendly, chatty welcome and well kept real ales. Pub games, leagues and plans for food. A lovely atmosphere. a new Taunton favourite!

John Wallace Linton, Newport

Yes its always full of CHAVs, its Newport afterall.
They can be entertaining to watch at a distance;-)
The beers well kept and the current manager's well meaning.
its a little understaffed for such a busy place but the foods got better lately (out of peak times) so don't right it off.
Give it a try if your passing

Hanbury Arms, Caerleon

The new landlord and staff have really freshened up the place and its always weloming with plenty of choice of beers.
The foods all hearty fayre and the short menu is a good thing!
So you just know its all cooked to order (NB always beware of extensive menus and their ping of Mwaves)
Its location in Caerleon is its best asset and they seem to know it. The Newport buses stop right outside so there's no need to drive there, although it has a carpark too.
A good mix of punters age groups means it universally popular .Not chasing the fickle alcopopper market like some other pubs.
keep it up guys!

The Angel Hotel, Baneswell

Has been closed for quite a while....

17 Dec 2011 20:25

Red Lion, Newport

Recently had a spruce up outside and in.
Usually 2 or 3 real ales on tap.
London pride was nice and have had a nice black sheep too.
Staff a liitle distant and yes,its a bit Cliquey but has authentic pub charm never the less.
Darts, pool and Shove Ha'penny leagues.
Large screen TVs for Major sports, oh and football.
Landlady puts on a good buffet spread for Doo's too.

The Lamb, Newport

Town centre Dump, but don't knock it there's few of these original character boozers left. Too many Lagers slappers and 'Ne'er do wells' for me although Landlord's a pleasant chap

17 Dec 2011 20:13

The Hereford Arms, Newport

Good back street boozer halfway between centre and maindee shops.
Rough looking clientelle and staff, but looks can be deceiving, Besides I've never seen trouble there.Pub dog's a sweety too.
Usually have about 3 real ales on the pull and bottles too.
Good selection of crisps, scatchings and nibbles.
Several pool tables and dartboards and often hold pool/darts events.
Give it a go!
