The Prince Albert, Twickenham

Always good and pleasant service here, with plenty of bar staff. You never have to wait long and the "Pride" is tip top.
The Thai food is lovely and the portions generous. I'd rather eat here than in any Thai restaurant.

The William Web Ellis, Twickenham

Even though I am a seasoned regular of the "Ellis" I have to post a word to the wise.
This is the cheapest pub in Twickenham but on a match day becomes the dearest. You have to accept a plastic pot, and pay £4.50 for bitter, (normally £2.55) this wouldn't be half as bad if you could get a decent ale but all the goodies are taken off leaving "Green King IPA" (gnat's), Doombar and Pride. Us regulars go elsewhere on match days.

Sadly the prices of The Monday Club have gone up from £1.99 to £2.35, a staggering 18% rise. I emailed JDW for an explanation but just got a standard reply of we are still competitive against other chains.

The Eel Pie, Twickenham

Aaargh, the Eel Pie now features a cocktail bar, upstairs loos with hand cream and food prices of £6 3/4, £7 1/2 etc. Yes prices in fractions, for those who can't do their sums.
The rolls are now "Freshly Baked Rustic Seeded Pan Bagnat" with various fillings.
The beers and Lagers have surprisingly gone down by 5p, but for how long ?
A pint of Badger is £3.30 which is probably the cheapest after Wetherspoons.
It is, however, incredibly smart with attentive and smiling bar staff but a good old boozer no more.

The London Apprentice, Old Isleworth

3.80 for a mediocre pint of "London Pride"! This pub is vastly over-rated. It's probably the best in that area but that's not saying much if we're honest.

The Prince Albert, Twickenham

Nice friendly local with very good service from attractive barmaids of different nationalities. Excellent pint of "Pride", although not cheap at 3.55.

The William Web Ellis, Twickenham

I was in here yesterday when Quins played Leicester, a capacity crowd of 82,000.
Although the place was packed, there were 15 ( at least ) bar staff on who gave exemplary service. Food was being served and you didn't have to wait long for a drink. "The Ellis" has it's knockers but if you get yourself known as a regular you will find that the bar staff are very good indeed, and when you think that you can get a good pint for 2.25 it's no wonder other pubs are closing.

The Sussex Arms, Twickenham

Lovely place, Twelve ales at 3 a pint, cider at 3.20 PLUS every tenth one free. Smiling bar staff who offer you a choice of a jug or a glass. Shame it's tucked away, but well worth a visit.

The Eel Pie, Twickenham

As a long standing regular of "The Pie" I have to agree with other reviews here and state that this place has lost it's charm.
It used to be a really good, friendly boozer of the old school, and was run very well by Alan, Claire and an attentive and hard working staff. (Sadly all now gone.)
The simple food menu has gone pretentious with a Cheese Baguette (Aaaargh!) costing you 5.25. The very good and cheap lagers have been replaced by ones that can cost you upwards of four quid and are nowhere near as good.
In common with quite a few of the regulars, I have taken my business elsewhere and await the reopening of "The Three Kings".

The White Swan, Twickenham

I happened to walk into this "pub" today after an absence of some two years (the subsequent absence will be even longer) Requesting a half of "Naked Ladies", a local brew which is normally cheaper than average, I was charged 1.80 and was informed upon enquiring that a pint was 3.35 (Do the Math!) This was served up under- measure by some snooty black clad harridan. The bar staff look like a Panzer battalion but aren't as pleasant.
This establishment remains a pokey, pretentious little dive whose only claim to fame is the lovely riverside view, but you could get that by sitting on the pavement outside. The toilets (outside) remain disgusting after many years.
My advice to anyone taking a pleasant riverside stroll from from Twickenham to Richmond is to carry on strolling until you get to a decent Richmond hostelry and give this abomination a very wide berth.

The George, Twickenham

I wouldn't normally go near this place, but Sunday nights are now Jam nights with very good music and people, and there are 3 real ales at 2 (yes two quid).
The state of the toilets however, attest to it's weekday reputation, but if this pub is on the up then it's good news for Twickenham.

The William Web Ellis, Twickenham

"The Ellis" has recently got rid of it's chav disco and is reducing it's opening hours on Thurs to Sat.
To be honest once you get known to the bar staff here, this is not a bad boozer, (mainly after work)
where four of you can get change out of a tenner for a round.
OK, like all spoons it has it's share of WiFiers, OAPs, students and loons but I there are plenty of decent folk who go there, put off by the ever increasing prices of it's local competitors.
The food's not brilliant but come on, a beer and a burger for 6.59 ? Beats a Big Mac and a watery coke.
Give "The Ellis" a try sometime.

The Robin Hood Inn, Pontefract

The "Robin Hood" has returned and is better than ever. Eight (yes Eight) hand pumps and a few Belgos. Wonderful atmosphere, with Darts, Dommies and two quiz nights. The beers are great and reasonably priced. Well worth a visit.

The Eel Pie, Twickenham

To anyone thinking of paying attention to Princess JoJo's remarks, all I can say is check out the reviews for "The Eel pie" and contrast them to those for "The Barmy" & "The Swan". (on this site)
There's nothing wrong with "The Pie", it remains the best pub in Twickenham and I never meet any wee smelling dogs in there. The bar staff are friendly and on the ball, and the "Badger" at 2.75 with every 10th one free remains excellent value.

The Town Wharf, Old Isleworth

Further Addenda. Now vacated by the replacements for the delightful couple. (after 4 weeks) Will keep you informed.

The Town Wharf, Old Isleworth

Addenda, recently vacated by the afore-mentioned delightful couple
after 4 months. What's occurring with Sam's?
Watch this space for further details.

The Robin Hood Inn, Pontefract

Sadly now closed. One of the few remaing real ale and in fact real pubs left in "Ponty", although a poster on the window promises a re-opening soon. Let's hope that it's character will be preserved, and it's dreadful loos not, when it does.

24 Feb 2010 22:26

The Town Wharf, Old Isleworth

Recently taken over by a delightful couple, Keith and Fiona, who are making every effort to ensure that this remains a pleasant place to drink. The beer's good and cheap (1.94) and the view lovely. Far better than it's over-priced and pretentious neighbour, "The London Apprentice"

24 Feb 2010 22:21

The Fox, Twickenham

You could eat your dinner out of the toilets in "The Fox". In fact your dinner's already there so long as you like mushrooms. This might well be the oldest pub in Twickenham but it is a dark and dismal affair, full of crooks and nannies ( and no I'm not slurring) and up to now has been vastly over-priced. I can wait for it's re-opening.

13 Oct 2009 22:50

The Town Wharf, Old Isleworth

A Pint of "Old Brewery" at 1.90 and a sausage butty with chips for 2.95 in pretty pleasant surroundings both in and out.
'Nuff said I think.

16 Jul 2009 22:35

The Barmy Arms, Twickenham

It's becoming obvious to all and sundry now that this place is putting Twickenham on the map not in a good way.
I can only refer all gentle readers to the 3rd May's comments of the knowledgeable and erudite "StMargaretsman" :

There are excellent substitutes in the area which all may feel free to use. (sic)

A sentiment well said.

16 Jul 2009 22:31

The Windmill Inn, Pontefract

A few hillbillies and Giro- cashers in on a lunch time but generally OK.
Old Brewery bitter at 1.40 a pint, cheaper than any club. Amusing landlord who on one visit was seen leaving the Gents with a bottle of bleach and enquiring (not in a whisper) of his clientele "Who's S**t in there?"
Can't be faulted for atmosphere.

7 May 2009 15:29

The White Swan, Twickenham

I happened to re-visit this little hostlery last Sunday at about 9:30pm. There was one table of 4-5'ish "OK Yah" types and one totally disinterested barman in sad need of a personality transplant. Faced with this tableau I decided to try a half of "Naked Ladies" and was asked for 1.75. When I enquired as to whether this beer was now 3.50 a pint, I was told no it was three pounds but a half was 1.75. A Twickenham resident of ten years now, I will not be returning.
Incidentally I did use the outside loos on the way out and as stated by previous contributors, they are disgusting.

The Eel Pie, Twickenham

What's special about the "Eel Pie"? Nothing, and that's just the way we regulars like it. If you want good service, plain honest food, good company and beer at 2.50 then the "Pie" is the place to go in Twickenham.
The quiz on a Thursday is also a great night.

27 Apr 2008 11:04

The London Apprentice, Old Isleworth

Trying to get served in here on a Saturday night is past a joke. I was in last night with friends and had to shout to get a drink from barmaids who would look at you and then keep disappearing to collect glasses, deliver food and bottles of champagne to various corners of the pub that at times seemed to be overrun with toddlers. (yes at nearly 10pm) Supposedly 5 beers on tap but 2 ran out while we were there and as usual "London Pride" off.
This seems to be the usual Saturday night scenario now from a "pub" that is rapidly going downhill.
