The Hole in The Wall, Southsea

Congratulations on the baby and winning pub of the year! It's all happening! Had some of Grandma's Ginger Beer last night... phew... great stuff!!

The Villagers Inn, Blackheath

Just a quick note to say hello to The Villagers crowd from a distant (in more ways than one?!) local! Joe

The Hole in The Wall, Southsea

I'm back in Prague now, but I did spend some great evenings in The Hole in The Wall again during my trip back to you UK over Christmas/New Year. Again, I filled myself silly with the O-Hagan's sausages and mash. And tried the amazing alcoholic ginger beer... ooh, I'll kill for one of those right now! After two pints you certainly knew it was alcoholic!! Yum!

The Hole in The Wall, Southsea

Re-visited this little pub recently... several times!! My family who live in the area now visit regularly. Great food at an amazing price - very filling - I'd recommend the 'O-Hagan's sausages and mash'! Much busier than it used to be which really helps with the atmosphere.

Pub, Chilworth

Just heard from an old friend in the area that a Magners is now 3.99 - that is a very scary price!!

Angry Alys Wine Bar and Restaurant, Southsea

Nope, I'm not the owner!!! In fact it's just changed hands and is now called TRUFFLES WINE BAR. I'd NEVER want to run a bar, I'm far too lazy!!

Marquis de Sade, Prague

...and it closed last year. :o)

Jama, Prague

Returned here after a little break - free WiFi connection for taking the laptop in, or use their own computers. But be prepared to pay much higher prices than the rest of the nearby bars. 35Kc for a Gambrinus, usually around 24Kc everywhere else. Friendly staff though which made up for the prices!

The Musketyr, Prague 1

Always a little worried when Krusovice is on the list in a Czech bar, but as this is freshly served its a whole different experience! With functional staff and with funky decor, musical instruments and things hanging from the walls, this is a fun bar for a few of an evening!

The Villagers Inn, Blackheath

Now featuring a pool table! Free pool tournament every Sunday evening.

Hogshead, Southsea

This one-time table service pub by day is a great value food pub, if I recall correctly there's a 'buy two main meals for 7' deal. By night the bar is buzzing. With TVs playing music videos or sport (when it's on). Toilets are a bit of a jaunt up a steep staircase which can be a nightmare after enjoying too much of the liquid refreshment! Disabled toilets one the bar floor though.

Goose On The V&A, Southsea

Have been here a few times in the past year - first time even the barman was amazed how cheap it was!! Couldn't believe it. If you're after a cheap drink, providing they still are rock bottom, then this is your place. Food is also available - we had some good wedges and bits and pieces. Gets very busy at weekends though.

Angry Alys Wine Bar and Restaurant, Southsea

Formerly known as Angry Ali's, this establishment run by charismatic barman Jon is the meeting place for Southsea's discerning residents. Regular themed evenings with appropriate food and music colour the day-to-day experience of Indigo's. Reasonably priced drinks and excellently prepared food by Chef Lorraine you will not be disappointed. Nights to remember are hosted by Jon with his unique style and professional approach to all areas of barmanship. Every night in Indigo is one to remember - meet local dignitaries, celebrities and great characters every time!

The Barley Mow, Southsea

Definately a traditional locals pub. Although it does have live music on a Thursday night and a pool table in a seperate bar. Another functional bar really, nothing outstanding, but it serves drinks with a local banter filled atmosphere.

The Still and West, Portsmouth

Situated overlooking Portsmouth Harbour and the Gunwharf development. Excellent location with great views during the day and at night (when the Spinnaker tower is lit up). Great fish and chip with a bottle of wine deal although I found lagers a tad overpriced. If driving down there take it easy on the tram lines and cobbles!! Say hello to Graham (Grub), our Australian friend behind the bar!

The India Arms, Portsmouth

Two pool tables, cheap drink and a big screen for the big games - not really my scene, but when it's reasonably quiet it's great for a few games of pool before a Sunday roast round at Mum's house. :o) It's a functional pub, does what it says on the tin. Mostly a student crowd, always a lively atmosphere.

The Royal Oak, Langstone

One of our favourite hideaways! This pub is located on the edge of the harbour of Langstone. Catch this area at low-tide (full tidal details written inside the door on a blackboard!) and you can have an beautiful walk along the harbour's beach. Passing the old mill, duck pond, seeing great views of rare birds and moored boats, this is a lovely location. The pub itself has recently been tastefully renovated. Always happy to see Staropramen on tap here, a good Czech lager. We've stopped by in the past for duck, roasts and puddings (too many to list!). We visited a folk night one evening where people of all abilities and ages were encouraged to take part - a great evening with a fabulous atmosphere. Enjoy the low ceilings and oak beams of this very traditional pub best on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

All Bar One, Portsmouth

Overlooking the harbour this is an excellent place to relax after a busy day's shopping at Gunwharf. The coffees are their speciality but I'd specifically recommend the 'Jaffa cheesecake' - an orange flavoured cheesecake drizzled with cream and swirls of chocolate sauce. An excellent looking, and great tasting dessert! Was excited to see Staropramen on (Czech beer) but this has recently disappeared despite the pump remaining. Don't be fooled! Enjoy a pint while watching the day, and large ships, pass by.

The Seahorse, Shalford

Recently visited The Seahorse after quite a break from the area. It has changed hands and has had a refurbishment. There is a good quality look and feel to the place and the food ordered was prepared in a timely and 'cared for' fashion. It is clear the new chef, and owner, is passionate about high quality ingredients sourcing them from all around the country. Atmosphere was good and staff were fun and friendly without swamping our table with the ever increasingly meaningless 'is everything ok with your meal' question. Well worth a visit. Although take care leaving the car-park, on-coming traffic is often speedy and the entrance/exit is not hugely visible.

The Villagers Inn, Blackheath

Always a friendly welcome here. Only in recent months has this become a regular haunt for me when back in the area. It is worth trying the music night on Tuesday which is often a fun evening with excellent musicians. I've not tried the food recently, but have had some great roasts here on a Sunday in the past. Andy and Sue are doing a good job of giving this pub the welcoming, good atmophere it used to have in the early days.

Pub, Chilworth

When I'm back in the area (or indeed the country!) I always pop in to The Percy. As my local for many years I witnessed many, largely unsuccessful, changes. Ted, Shane and the team have given much needed life to this pub without conforming to the usual template of brewery owned establishments. Food is excellent and staff are friendly and attentive. I wish them success, as usual, with furthering the success of this pub and with their other projects.
