The Geldart, Cambridge

A great pub for a drink. But worth a special trip for the food. The Hot Rocks may seem like a gimmick, but... the cut of meat served is typically excellent, and you can just like you like it. And every mouthful is hot.

They served the best oryx I've ever tasted. (Actually, it was the only oryx...)

The Bun Shop, Cambridge

As per the last post, the Bun Shop is yet again under new management. But unlike most of the prior incumbents (5 in ~5 years), these folks look like they know what they're about.

For now, the sign still says The Bun Shop, and the interior is little changed. But the new menu is in place -- watch this space for a report. We have also not yet explored the wine list, but it appears, as cameron.JA says, to have had some thought put into it.

The pub is due to close for what sounds like an ambitious refurb in mid-February, from which it will emerge re-christened the Jolly Scholar. But in the mean time, it's a properly run pub again. No need to wait for the refurb -- give it a try now.

The Graduate, Cambridge

Specifically, it is to become a Wetherspoon's pub -- as I predicted nearly two years ago, see below.

The Cross Keys, Cambridge

Another one bites the dust :( It's now a Japanese restaurant.

The Maypole, Cambridge

The long-standing landlords, the Castiglione family, recently bought the pub from the brewery (Greene King?). Their first move was to install 4 more pumps, which feature a rapidly changing retinue of ales, mostly from small brewers you won't see elsewhere in Cambridge.

Since I last wrote here, we've gone off piste from burgers to some of their Italian menu offerings. Based on that, I'll raise my description of the food from "not bad" to "Quite nice, actually".

A great pub that just got better.

The Eagle, Cambridge

An iconic Cambridge pub in a prime location, always packed. Which means the folks who run it can rest on their laurels. I'd like to have had the option of something besides Green King IPA on a busy evening last Tuesday.

Ok pub. Could be great.

The Burleigh Arms, Cambridge

This pub hasn't been reviewed here in three years -- but nothing has changed. The food continues to be excellent, and it's a great place for a pint.

The Bun Shop, Cambridge

This pub sure has a tough time of it. After re-opening, they were brilliant for a while. The Gunner's Daughter described by Skusey below is scrummy.

But then last night... "Oh dear 5 hand pumps and all the clips turned round." (See comment by Love_good_ale, 29 June 2008).

At least it was open -- which it wasn't at 9PM Monday night.

I'm hoping they get their act together -- this ought to be a great pub.

The Graduate, Cambridge

Closed about 6 months ago. It won't be missed -- it was a terrible bar (I wouldn't dignify it with the term 'pub': No real ales.)

It is currently sporting a large 'To Let' sign. Weatherspoon's, are you listening? It's your sort of place.

The Pickerel Inn, Cambridge

A favourite. Sit in the front window and people watch. The view is of Magdalene Street and the College gates. It can get pretty crowded in the evening, though. There's an outdoor paved courtyard area if the weather is cooperating.

The Maypole, Cambridge

A unique pub. In term, it's full of students, including the large garden. Even on the most crowded, studenty evening, even with a lot of people quite ratted, the crowd is impeccably polite. (The landlords rather insist on that).

You never need to push your way through a crowd -- if you stand there with a pint in each hand, someone will quickly spot you and move his mates out of your way.

Not much to look at. The 'garden' is paved, with plastic furniture, and next door is a multistory car park. But a great place to drink. There's a rapidly changing retinue of guest ales. And the food's not bad.

The Old Spring, Cambridge

This is a good, honest, well-run pub. Well-kept beer (GK & Abbot, plus a guest), pretty good food. Brightly lit and a bit soulless. Caters to a classy professional crowd (except for me, that is).

The Sino Tap, Cambridge

This pub, recently refurbished, is now The Punters. Nice modern decor, Adnam's on tap, a bit pricey. Separate party pavilion.

The Cambridge Arms, Cambridge

This pub no longer exists as the cambridge Arms. It has recently been turned into a posh-looking restaurant called d'Ary's, owned by the d'Arenburg wine co and serving their wines. I haven't been in there yet, but have heard good things said about it.

Don't plan a visit for a while yet though, as the place suffered a fire a month or two ago and is still closed. Not sure when they plan to re-open.
