The Vivary Arms, Taunton

Pleasant, cosy and respectable pub with a friendly landlord and decent beer. The walls of the Gents are festooned with cuttings consisting of jokes.

The Racehorse Inn, Taunton

The atmosphere in this pub on a Friday and Saturday night is terrific. Usually packed as there is a band playing. People of all ages although maturity dominates - but the clientele seem to be in good humour even when you bump into them endlessly. The decor is tired and, to be honest, has a bit of a touch of faux-oldness, but the landlord is a bloody good egg and always friendly.

The Bird In Hand, North Curry

I do like this pub. It's pricey but the beer is good and the pub itself has a lot of character. The staff tend to be young ladies, some of whom seem to be chosen for their loveliness rather than their knowledge of how to pull a pint, but it is usually a pleasant atmosphere and the landlord always say 'hello'.

The Maypole Inn, Thurloxton

As referred to below, a few of the positive reports are obviously spurious if you look at the poster's records , including one whose only other contributions is a spoiler of the nearest pub. The name 'Honest Doug' makes me smile as I am pretty sure that he is very closely related to the landlord. Very closely indeed.
The fact is that the landlady has absolutely no idea as how to behave in the in the world of hospitality and the landlord will never acknowledge a mistake in his cooking. The beer is kept well although pricey - and the pub itself is a pleasant place. Unfortunately, the place is usually staffed by young waitresses who are no substitute for a 'mine host'.
