Jolly Butchers, Stoke Newington

Camrawoman - Please tell us you do have a girlfiend ;-)

11 Jun 2010 09:57

The Swan Tavern, West Wimbledon

Large open modern interior. 2 Real ales on my visit. Pedigree and GK Swift.
The latter was drinkable.

As a visitor I would struggle to return, unless I was alcoholically dependent. If I lived locally, I would struggle to find daveboyjones enthusiasm.

In monopoly board terms - Pass/chance/Go to Jail

The Bell Inn, Castle Hedingham

Multiroomed Public house with pleasant open bar area with barrels (firkins) racked behind the bar with real sold on gravity, by friendly barstaff

Two from Mighty oak and Adnams. Very reasonably priced 2.70-.280. Refreshing absence of GK. Beers in good condition

Recent local camra regional award, deservedly so and worthy of its entry in GBG 2010. I will make the effort to return.

The Old Crown, Hesket Newmarket

A not so secret gem well away from the more populated chocolate box areas of the lakes, and all the better for it.

The 5 beers offered should offer something for everyone in terms, of style and taste and all in price terms - the cheapest being 2.35 and the dearest 2.75.Superb Value

Real pub, real beer and real people !

This worth seeking out and worthy of a detour.

18 May 2010 12:23

The Grapes, Limehouse

Situated on the bank, of the river Thames. Pleasant wooden decked drinking area to the area affording wonderful views to watch the hustle and bustle
of river life.

A genuine interior that has not been subject to being continually overhauled.Prints of old London and Dickensian characters.I finally get to have a drink with my hero Mr Sam Weller !

4 real ales on. Timothy Taylor and Adnams usually , the latter in excellent condition and very good value at 3.00 for the metropolis. Two other guest ales
, but not usually micro, more likely to be Black sheep or Wells.

A good Public House worth seeking if in the area or for any fine sunny day. I will be returning.

30 Apr 2010 10:40

The Chequers Inn, Roxwell

This pub has recently dropped out of the GBG.

Old speckled Hen , ubiquitous un-unctuous GK IPA, and Adnams. Faced with this very vanilla range as always I opt for the Adnams as my control. Well kept and very enjoyable.

Landlord bought a local a drink (plus marks). Pleasant friendly crowd and a fireplace that is used (plus marks)

So why not in GBG 2010 ? - people aren't going to travel far for those beers, but it serves the locals well.

22 Apr 2010 10:31

The Artillery Arms, Ramsgate

Lovely pub just set back from the centre of town, and therefore has a clientele of locals, those in the know and GBG disciples. No lager drinking tourists here

5 or so real ales on wide and varied choice. Pleasant cosy bar area, comfortable seating up the back.

Verdict ; This or the Montefiore are arguably the pick of Ramsgate real ale venues. Make sure you visit both to decide! It would make an excellent local.

19 Apr 2010 13:12

Sir Stanley Gray, Pegwell Bay

Misspelled. Sir Stanley Gray being correct.

Imposing building on the cliff offering outstanding views of Pegwell bay , Sandwich and Deal afar.

3 Real ales on . Gadd's Uberhop, Abbot Ale and can't remember but 4.8%. So 3 good beers that afford the session drinker with no room for manoeuvre other than an Abbot shandy. Crazy policy if deliberate or perhaps we were unlucky.
Still served in good condition and a great view to enjoy them.

Verdict. Worth making the pleasant stroll along the clifftops from Ramsgate.

19 Apr 2010 12:46

The Churchill Tavern, Ramsgate

Large building nestling on the seafront offering good harbour and sea views. Offers up to 6 real ales from far and wide. I was amazed indeed delighted to be given the chance to drink Adnams extra(Why on earth did they temporarily stop brewing this fine beer), very rare.

Not as good as I remembered it but, pleasant drinking.

A ramble of tables and chairs , and there is not as much space inside as the outside suggests.

Perhaps the largest choice of ale in Ramsgate , but not the most pleasant place to drink them , purely my opinion.

R47

19 Apr 2010 12:31

The Montefiore Arms, Ramsgate

On first approaching the building , it looks to be well maintained which is more that can be said for a lot of Ramsgate ,especially its public houses.

On entry one is welcomed by a clean and pleasant environment.Knowledgeable and helpful barman . Warm friendly , pleasant locals.

3 real ales, Gadd's, Itchen Valley and boondoggle, plus Biddenden cider. The Gadd's we drank was very pleasant.

Verdict. This and the artillery arms and by far and way the best pubs in the immediate vicinity for the real ale drinker.

R46

19 Apr 2010 12:14

The Seven Stars, Chancery Lane

It's hard to tie down just what is the appeal of this pub. It has history , it's dirty
hasn't had any money spent on it in ages, it's expensive and the bar staff are efficient if not charming. Perhaps it is just rarity - a disappearing kind.
We would miss it if it went being the theory.

Darkstar and Adnams always on, I had the Hopback Fuggles on my visit.3.50.

Eclectic clientele

Verdict. "To be in Carey st." is an old saying for you were being made bankrupt in the nearby law courts. If you have, drown your sorrows here if you can still afford it.

15 Apr 2010 10:38

The Prince of Wales, Stow Maries

Classic white weather boarded building , well maintained inside and out. It has been a regular in the GBG for some time now.

Six real ales on at the time of my visit. Two from titanic and usually something from Crouch vale, local to here. Priced at 2.90 - 3.00 a pint. The serving area is quite small and I can imagine it gets testing at times/

Friendly ,intelligent ,local crowd. Lots to like about this public house and although not a destination pub in its own right it is well worth seeking out if in
the vicinity.

Verdict: Deserving of its 2010 GBG entry. Happy to return.

R44

14 Apr 2010 14:34

The Red Lion, Histon

A museum of brewerania with excellent beer. I won't go into detail as that has already been covered greatly. 7 Handpumps - mostly 2.80/2.90 a pint.

For the real ale connoisseur this is a must. I have refrained from scoring this a 10, and am questioning myself as to why.

Verdict. In Michelin Star terms this pub has deux etoiles - " Very much worth a journey , and expect a totally superior beer/pub experience"

R43

12 Apr 2010 10:02

The King William IV, Sedgeford

Following the recent development this pub is even closer to Country Inn Restaurant "with bar", which is how it advertises itself.

4 Beers on . Wherry ,Adnams, Tom Woods and Abbot, and seemingly no rotation with other breweries .Beer In good condition though

Very good new rooms for accommodation, but this doesn't not make it a destination pub for the real ale lover

Verdict. Worth calling in if in the area - pleasant back garden and pergola

R42

12 Apr 2010 09:46

The Fox and Hounds, Heacham

A great discovery.

Seven ales on the bar. Two of Heacham's own excellent beer. tasting samples offered for a 20pence donation to the RNLI , a great idea.

Friendly bar staff and locals, pleasant inside bar area and well equipped lavatories as mentioned in the bible (GBG).

Beer festivals held, Easter ,July and August BH.

Verdict: In an area that has sparse GBG entries this will serve the real ale lover well.

Verdict: Close to being a destination pub

12 Apr 2010 09:39

Wash and Tope Hotel, Hunstanton

We came here with great hope, not to gamble.

Two handpumps ,one of which was reversed , so minus marks and no sign of the 3rd handpump promised in the GBG .

The one beer offered was Heacham Gold at 3.00, expensive for the area. Beer
in reasonable and drinkable condition.I gave up counting the surrounding gaming machines.

This had the feel of drinking in an amusement arcade.

No amusement for us.On this showing it does not deserve its place in the 2010 GBG.

Verdict: If visiting this area make the effort to go to the Fox and Hounds in Heacham for a totally different experience

R40

12 Apr 2010 09:31

Dun Cow, Salthouse

Recent new entry into the GBG.

A fine beer garden for lazy birdwatchers (possible to see Barn owls), or simply to watch the world go by (or the traffic on the A147 at least), it's a lovely spot

Inside a clean and pleasant bar area, the bar itself had 4 handpumps. The wherry (2.90) was in very good condition. Adnams, Abbot and another East Anglia-centric beer

Mrs Polypinmath only requested tapwater which was served gladly with no chippy comment.

Deserving of its news GBG status , and will happily return.

12 Apr 2010 09:21

The Fleece, Chelmsford

The Landlord recently joined Camra and had a beer festival. Obviously making an effort.

I deliberately went outside of this period a truer picture of everyday life.

Two real ales on from 3 handpumps. The unimaginitive Bombadier and Brentwood Gold. The latter was 2.80 a pint and in reasonable condition.I presume the Brentwood beers will feature given the bar staff were wearing sponsored work wear.

Verdict. Embryonic. Drink elsewhere and watch its growth at arm's length

8 Apr 2010 10:10

The Eels Foot Inn, Eastbridge

Charming building serving Adnams ales in good quality condition yet on every visit the kitchen door has been open and the inside smells of a combination of various cooking fats and oils.

Staff visibly smoking outside the kitchen door. My job is to merely steer the knowledgeable drinker to end of his quest and not to comment on food, but I have to say that an adjacent diner's cheese ploughman's looked like a Jigsaw.
i.e. an unassembled Cheese roll with salad.

Verdict. Good to use as a pit stop on a minsmere walk but turn up early and drink outside.Deserving of its GBG 2010 entry, but as a whole I'm perplexed to this pub's current rating

R37

6 Apr 2010 13:27

The Railway, Stockport

I read somewhere this building was close to being demolished . As a building it would be no great loss. Henceforth I shall comment on the beer.

Incredible choice of up to 16 beers all in good condition from as little as 1.80 a pint with most 2.00 or under. Lots of Pennine beer.

Vibrant interesting crowd- everything from Grandma, hairy bikers, young lads on the pull , visiting Chelsi (sic) fans, bimbos and 2 drunk stockbrokers.Very friendly crowd indeed.

nb for Model railway enthusiasts visiting hoping -to see the train run around the top of the bar - currently experiencing long delays "dust on the tracks"

Go ? Yes! before it is redeveloped

R36

6 Apr 2010 12:13

The Arden Arms, Stockport

A very interesting interior as already documented. Two real fires give great warm to the whole thing. I am surprised it wasn't busier for my visit (although I hadn't announced it).

I am not a connoisseur of Robinsons so my comment on condition would be superfluous - but it was drinkable - there seems to be such a close band of variance with their beer range.

Should be included on a visit to the area, not just for the tickers.

R35

6 Apr 2010 11:57

The Pineapple, Stockport

I didn't find the warmth that the last 3 reviewers posted, or the smart lounge area described in the 2010 GBG.

However the landlord was friendly enough, the beer(Hartley's) in good condition and incredibly Cheap. Bitter (unknown)is as little as 1.66 in "happy hours".

The plate collection won't feature on the antique road show.

For the first time visitor there are many pubs in Stockport to prioritise before experiencing the ghostly (sic) charm of the pineapple.

R34

6 Apr 2010 10:46

The Crown Inn, Stockport

Excellent choice of beers. Up to 14 on my visit. Lovely multi-roomed inn with a real fire in use . Hardened crowd of real ale locals, and some pretty local lasses
visible

Beers in good condition and prices consistent for the area.

Service a little patchy on my visit, but it's worth the wait.

A must on any pub crawl in the area. Should be in your top 3

R33

6 Apr 2010 10:38

The Nursery Inn, Heaton Norris

1930's period building with many original features and furnishings. The 2010 GBG describes the bowling green to the rear as a rare feature.I am not implying unique, but where are the others? I would love to know.

Deservedly on the national inventory

Busy vibrant crowd of locals enjoying a wide range of Hyde's beers, the guests being London pride and roosters on my visit.

Go for the building alone. If you like Hyde's beers it's a bonus.

A must on any visit to Stockport and in Michelin star terms "worth a detour"

R32

6 Apr 2010 10:30

The Woolpack, Chelmsford

This pub has come a long way in real ale terms over recent years. Enthusiastic landlord who has done well despite being handcuffed to serving the Greene King Stable, Think Abbot ,Morland, Speckled Hen and such inveigled offerings as St Edmunds and , other trick GK guest beers. That said I still like Hardy and Hanson's despite change of ownership.

Excellent Easter beer festival .Beers around the 3 mark.

I am reliably informed he has bought access to 2 of the 8 handpumps , thus allowing 2 more genuine guest ales.

Should be included on a local crawl

R31

6 Apr 2010 10:20

The Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak

Visited and witnessed 31st March

R30

1 Apr 2010 10:25

The Dartmouth Arms, Dartmouth Park

Wonderful building that has been refurbished in a way that won't agree to all
but in no offensive. Wonderful large door and windows.

Lovely real fire .

3 handpumps.Only one beer on .Mmm Disappointing. When it is your business, and your sole existence to buy beer and then sell it on to keep customers happy..........That said the Westerham Bull Dog was very enjoyable if expensive at 3.40.

A few of George Michael's friends present on my visit.

I will return.

1 Apr 2010 09:34

The Lord Palmerston, Dartmouth Park

Classic London corner Public House that hasn't been over modernised.

Large tables of blonde sirens drinking rose by the bucket. Eccentric's wearing deerstalkers and tweeds. An interesting crowd.

3 beers on . Redemption being a new brewery for me .Very enjoyable indeed.Served by friendly helpful bar staff.

Lovely to see a real fire . I will be returning.

This pub exuded warmth in many ways.

1 Apr 2010 09:22

The Junction Tavern, Kentish Town

Has tipped over the balance from Gastro pub to restaurant with a bar in my opinion.

Sambrook's Wandle 3.00 very enjoyable - two other beers on Black Sheep and London Pride.

Infrequent mini festivals.

Not enough magnetism for me to return.

I concur with the mighty Boozemaster !

1 Apr 2010 09:06

The Pineapple, Kentish Town

Classic unspoilt London corner boozer. Loved the Double diamond sticker on the window. Original Bar counter and brewery mirror. Amiable staff.

3 of 4 handpumps on .Ubu Purity 3.00 .In very good condition. Bass and Adnams being the others

Very friendly locals, in this nicely hidden away gem. Easter Beer festival imminent.

Worth making the effort to find

1 Apr 2010 08:56

The Oxford, Kentish Town

Trendy foody pub. 3 real ales on - Cornish Coaster, Harvey's and Bishop's finger
the first was priced at 3.30. In good condition.

Intelligent crowd gathered for the Wednesday quiz. Some of them were blondes.

We left before the quiz started so unsure as to its difficulty.

I will return.

1 Apr 2010 08:52

The White Horse, Chelmsford

No I am not a dipsomaniac.- I just had to return

How could this pub have been awarded the Local Camra prize of most improved pub ?

A mini beer festival running to support National cask ale week. Applause.

Daleside Spring fever and Celt Bronze straight from the cask - both fine.OK over to the handpumps to hunt the bad egg. Mmm Lcanster Blonde - fine, Caledonian
3 Monkeys fine...............keep going I thought,........ Adnams stout - yuk.

So from temporary redemption, to more improvement needed still

The White Horse deserves praise for its efforts but please quality before quantity.

I am happy to let local pub celebrity columnist The Shermanator be the arbiter
and drink elsewhere.

31 Mar 2010 10:33

The Three Fishes, Shrewsbury

Tucked away on a back street, but please do make the effort. Great beer, good wide choice in perfect condition. Busy vibrant atmosphere , of likeminded beer lovers.

Local Camra top brass abound here and so should you. The landlord should give classes - he is a master of his trade.

High consistent standard. Top of the list for any pubcrawl.

Verdict : Start rather finish your crawl from here and do the beer justice.

R24

29 Mar 2010 10:58

The Loggerheads, Shrewsbury

A Marston's house . Wide but seemingly un-rotating beer list. Very friendly keen and knowledgeable landlord. Beer in good condition on my visit.

Fantastically aged snug bar that was gentlemen only until as recently as 1975.Sadly the fireplaces are unused /condemned - very shortsighted approach from the brewery unwilling to spend the reputed 3000.

A visit to Shrewsbury wouldn't be complete without a visit here

Verdict: Treat the Mrs and take her to see that snug bar and let her buy you a
pint

R23

29 Mar 2010 10:31

The Charlton Arms, Ludlow

Verging towards Hotel rather than true pub, but a wonderful snug bar serving 4 real ales. Bishop's castle stunning value at only 2.10 a pint. All beers in good condition on our visit. Recent redecoration added to the quality of the experience.

Magnificent setting overlooking the river.

Apparently popular for wedding functions. I am not a marriage counsellor, but ignore her indoors and drink with the lads in the bar rather than on the supposedly glamorous restaurant/decking area.

Verdict: I think this would be a perfect winter snug bar.

R22

29 Mar 2010 10:13

The Church Inn, Ludlow

Set in the middle very middle of Ludlow and at the heart of the community
judging by the people coming and going. Very much reminded me of that colossus of pubs the once peerless Wykeham Arms ,Winchester (Graeme Jameson we miss you ,God bless).

Lots of local ales ( 7 plus) very reasonably priced and served well surrounded by local characters. I only wish I could have lingered longer

Verdict: I must go to Church more often.

R21

29 Mar 2010 09:37

The Coach and Horses, Shrewsbury

Once through the door a small old fashioned bar crowded with locals awaits. A good choice of 4 or so beers in good condition.

Verdict. Stay in the small front bar for the more authentic experience and avoid the overmodernized yet comfortable and spacious rear. Don't linger too long for the Admiral Benbow awaits next door.

R20

29 Mar 2010 09:27

The Admiral Benbow, Shrewsbury

A real ale lovers shrine. 8 OR 9 very regional beers covering the whole spectrum of colour and taste on my recent visits. Add in two ciders and there is no excuse to leave sober

Well staffed bar made for efficient service and no delay for thirsty reviewers.

My experience of the atmosphere and clientele was quite the opposite to RogberB's. I found the crowd in most to be quite urbane giving a buzzy atmosphere. Mix in a few nutters (someone who knew someone who had been on masterchef and a treacle dressed up as Dorothy Goodbody)and some nice eye candy and you are sure to smile.

Veridct .The Cathedral of Shrewsbury's real ale pubs.If you are a real ale visitor and /or local and recently divoreced this is a must visit on any to visit to this lovely town.

R19

29 Mar 2010 09:13

Salopian Bar, Shrewsbury

Local Camra pub of the year for 2008 and 2009. Judged on beer alone an understandable achievement. 7 or so real ales on ,all in good condition and reasonably priced, with a regional bias served by very friendly staff.

Previous reviewer Booze Allen was still sober at this point on his crawl - indeed the pub has all four interior walls painted in a bright garish red. If this is your favourite colour then maybe a great regular haunt.

Lots of sky tv too.

Verdict: A good breeding ground for weaning youngsters off larger on to proper beer.

The presence of the bouncer may reason they have already found it. Certainly no suggestion that he was needed, and this pub should feature on any crawl.

R18

29 Mar 2010 08:52

The Lord Aberconway, Liverpool Street

Appeared in very early editions of the GBG when formerly called the Sation Buffet. The old sign appeared briefly during renovation.

It is getting gradually more adventurous with its beers. TT, Pride, Adnams explorer, Gloom-Bar, Daleside Morrocan and Thornbridge Jaipur availbable on my visit. The latter in good condition - 3.15 a pint.

Sadly spoilt by the continual smell of cooking fat , obvious to those merely walking past to get their trains.

Still a better alternative to the Railway opposite which specialises in short measures.

Verdict . Good place to linger if your train is delayed.
Would be so much better after a decent clean up

R17

25 Mar 2010 09:07

The White Horse, Chelmsford

Hard to find GBG entry. And I find it hard to see how it made and entry into the bible of real ale lovers.

8 Handpumps with a Welsh bias, ie lots of Brains which is what the cellarman himself must lack. Quality, simply bad. I dread to think what a pint of "across the tops" would taste like.

Not a destination pub when there are others so much better so close.

I will report back in 12 months (or longer).

22 Mar 2010 10:38

The Ship Inn, Blaxhall

Tatty but genuine village local full of the locals. Great to see ,and hear the burr of the Suffolk accent, in a peacefully quiet if not idyllic village

In the Adnams world that is flat ,it is heartening to have a pub in this area with non Adnams beers, as good as the latter is (and prompted me to hold their stock).

5 real ales available. Wherry, brewers gold and cottage were on , for my visit.

The Adnams Old Ale (2.80) was very reasonably priced and in perfect condtion. What a great style of beer it is.I only wish we saw more of it.

The perfect way to celebrate seeing a Bittern form 5 yards.

I wish this pub continued success

R15

22 Mar 2010 10:07

The Original Plough, Chelmsford

6 real ales on display on my visit. The ubiquitous GK and 5 other very original offerings. Slater's Top totty in excellent condition. 2.80 a pint. Other beers very reasonably priced too, and in consistently good condition.

Friendly and knowledgeable barstaff. Mixed patrons with the odd didicoit.More enjoyable midweek than a busy Saturday, but that's my fault for getting old.

One criticism. Very slow to replace beers as soon as one goes off.Sometimes only 4 or 5 on.

Any visit to Chelmsford by real ale lovers probably requires a visit here.I do recommend trying the railway tavern (opposite) too.

R14

22 Mar 2010 09:46

The Railway Tavern, Chelmsford

This must surely have the most pleasant and clean interiors in the town, making for enjoyable supping environment

4 handpumps - Brentwood brewery, and Farmer's Nelson's blood tasted
- in perfect condition. 2.80 a pint very reasonable too.Friendly bar staff.

nb for darts players - excellent board and throw

Since my visit I have shrouded myself with criticism for not patronising this more frequently.

This deserves to be in the GBG and should be your first port of call leaving the railway station. I hope this sees more custom.

Verdict: Excellent

R13

22 Mar 2010 09:35

The Oddfellows Arms, Chelmsford

The new landlord is indeed making an effort. Gladly he knows more about beer than aesthetic decoration.

Ignore the photo - Horrible new colour scheme and pub sign/ lettering font that belongs on Southend sea front.

More importantly On to the beer. 4 Handpumps with the totally unoriginal GK IPA , Abbot, Gloom Bar and the excellent Mighty oak Maldon Gold. The latter in excellent condition. Brentwood Brewery Choc-orange on in the tap room to increase the range an admirable addition.

Chelmsford Prison is opposite. So the first place to get a decent pint if you are doing time reading this on-line. Or waiting outside to visit a member of the family.

I suspect the decoration inside Her Majesty's is slightly better.

Verdict : If I lived locally it wouldn't be my regular. On the watch. list.Be brave and replace the GK would be my advice.

22 Mar 2010 09:18

The Magpie, Bishopsgate

Experiment: To prove a pleasant drinking environment exists near to Liverpool St
that is more upmarket than Hamilton Hall

Method : to have 3 ales during a lunchtime visit , in pints and half pints
testing different barmaids

Apparatus: Straight glasses, Jugs actively encouraged/advertised- 8 handpumps
Liquids- JHB, Black Cat, TT landlord , Gloom Bar, Hydes, Stonehenge

Conclusion: The Best pub near Liverpool st by far.Beer prices were reasonable
2.85-3.15.Pleasant customer base. Helpful bar staff

Return ? Yes

R11

19 Mar 2010 14:47

The Harp, Covent Garden

Small pub tucked away from Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery. No longer the secret it used to be and deserves its accolade.

The harp is a gallery itself of showpiece beers. Eclectic band of customers

8 handpumps. Harvey's Sussex best ever-present. 3.10 on my visit.

Large opening concertina window at the front opens it up to the street is a striking feature to be enjoyed(for myself with the Telegraph crossword)

Friendly bar staff.

This is a destination pub, worthy of a detour.

R10

19 Mar 2010 10:51

Nell of Old Drury, Covent Garden

Great large window at the front, with seats to the interior, small bar made for ambient drinking atmosphere.

Mainly regulars on my visit, but I can imagine the pre and post theatre surge is irksome so time your visit.

Judging by the Adnams the Landlord knows his trade.2.85 a pint is Suffolk prices too - very reasonable for this part of town

Only 2 handpumps gave it a 2 dimensional feel, but me the required standard for its GBG entry.

19 Mar 2010 10:33

The Coach and Horses, Covent Garden

Drinking off -piste (not in GBG 2010) is always dangerous

Spitfire and Courage best .3.10. uninspiring

Nvertheless a proper boozer and a genuine feel to it. One to be enjoyed by the Guinness and Lager crowd.

19 Mar 2010 10:16

The Hamilton Hall, Liverpool Street

One is Ill advised to loiter outside. Likelihood to be asked for "spare change"

Usually 2 guest ales offered that aren't Greene King etc. Unlikely to see the bar staff on QI

Closest decent real ale availability to your railway carriage however. Handy If you have 10 minutes to spare before your train. Better than the buffet car but for a session look elsewhere.

17 Mar 2010 13:29

The Carpenters Arms, Marble Arch

Classic London corner st Public House. Lovely large windows and bar rea.Pleasant young smiling wenches behind the bar.

6 real ales on my visit. Harvey's Sussex best (everpresent I believe) in excellent condition. Average prices for this part of the metropolis.

One could easily be late for that meeting after making a visit here..........

In Michelin star terms "worth a detour"

17 Mar 2010 13:21

The Chelsea Ram, Chelsea

Classy Young's pub tucked away off Lots Road, but reflected in its prices.Beer quality good and consistent. Above average looking barmaids.

One of the better pubs to frequent before Chelsi (sic) home games

17 Mar 2010 13:14

The Crosse Keys, Bank

A real ale lovers Mecca.

a) permanent mini beer festival with up to 24 ales available.

b) 2.40 a pint 2.30 at festival times

c) Beer always in excellent condition. I can only recall sending one pint back in 100's. Beer topped up without question.

Clean environment, friendly helpful bar staff. Service stretched at peak lunchtimes

15 Mar 2010 14:37

The Orange Tree, Chelmsford

Beer in excellent condition on my visit. 6 real eales offered, 7 if you include the ubiquitous sharp's Gloom-bar. No GK IPA here.

Friendly landlord who was seen to buy other customers beer.

Crying out for a lick of paint.

Easy to to tie in with a visit to the Queen's head next door to decide if this is
Chelmsford's premier Public House.

15 Mar 2010 09:17

The Queen's Head, Chelmsford

The Queen's head has definteley overcome the passing of the previous legendary
Landlord.

Still has 7/8 beers on offer. Although now at least 4 always from the Crouch Vale brewery. Beer in excellent condition, and Essex boys bitter only 2.36 a pint. Great value.

Pleasant clean interior, and pleasant .customers

Great real fire in the winter.

Still deserves a visit on any trip to Chelmsford.

Is this Chelmsford's premier Public House ?

15 Mar 2010 09:00

The Endeavour, Chelmsford

Quaint , original interior, small and clean are all adjectives that apply to this
enjoyable public house. Infrequent beer festivals- one such occurring on my visit. Patronised by an elder, friendly clientele

real ale Prices 2.80/2.90 on my visit. Beer in good condition.

Stock beers are GK IPA, Abbot, Adnams, usually always one from the excellent Mightyoak stable. A 2nd guest ale offering would greatly elevate this pub's
standing.

Unlucky not to be in GBG 2010, as it has previously enjoed inclusion in previous years.
