The Barley Mow Inn, Kirk Ireton

Really lovely traditional public house - great building and traditional roomed layout inside. Great ales served from the jug, and the landlady was pretty friendly in a Derbyshire kind of way. Second only to the Three Stags Heads in the county.

Crown, Liverpool

Lovely ornate interior. I thought all the Wetherspoon style advertisements and menus for meals for a fiver or cheap beer offers made it look a bit messy, but it was indeed very cheap. Its a nice old boozer and definitely worth a visit.

The Philharmonic, Liverpool

Had a big argument with the missus in this place but a few hours and very pleasant pints later we were ok with each other again. I think the beautiful decor helped.

The Grey Derby, Kennington

Nice little boozer, which is far more friendly and also far more of an authentic experience than the Hanover up the road. And as everyone keeps saying - it has a brilliant jukebox.

The Pineapple, Kentish Town

Like stepping into 1956 - love it.

The Archers, Whitechapel

Yes its a bit of mess, with cheap metal chairs as opposed to proper pub stools, a toilet that makes you heave, no bitter and only shit lagers but there is something about this place that I like. The karaoke is one of the best laughs in town...

The Godolphin Arms, Godolphin Cross

Its true - the steaks are gorgeous and the bar staff very friendly. Nice beer too.

The Prince Albert, Camden

Yes I smell a rat as well - four glowing reviews by four reviewers who all joined on the same day. What a coincidence - it comes to something when a pub has to write its own reviews and i'll eat my hat if this place gives free champagne to anyone! Had a few expensive pints there and it was ok - but nothing to write home about. The Constitution round the corner is leagues ahead.

Harpoon Louis, Taunton

This pub is now called The Plough Inn, and I just popped in there as I had two hours to wait at Taunton train station. I liked it, and didn't realise it had only been open for a month or so as it seemed to be quite settled. Four decent local ales and a nice atmosphere, as well as a few drunken scousers.

The Hawley Arms, Camden

I told you it was like Sodom and Gomorrah - 25 Oct 2007 - and now it has gone the same way.

The Three Stags Heads, Wardlow Mires

No - that one has since closed down, which is a shame. It wasn't a patch on the Three Stags, but it was nice to go up the hill and have a pint of cold lager outside in the summer once in a while.

Seven Stars, Derby

This is a great pub - I was in here twice over the Christmas period. A proper old boozer with friendly locals, decent beer, and heaps of history. What other pub can boast a 17th century well in the back bar?!

The Blessington Carriage, Derby

This place is awful, you have to pay to get in after about half ten and it is full of 12 year olds who still want to hear Jump Around by House of Pain - in 2007! A money making machine which lost any soul it once had years and years ago...

The Gladstone Arms, Borough

This has become a nice little pub now, with kinda traditional but kinda 70's decor and kinda folky live music when I went there last night. Black Sheep ok, but would benefit from another lighter bitter on tap, but all in all a friendly place.

The Caernarvon Castle, Camden

Hideous paint job and gigantic picture of Pete Doherty cursed this pub, it is now a goth shop or something. Other pubs beware!

The Hawley Arms, Camden

Went here last week - used to be quite a nice old boozer, but now it is like sodom and gomorrah rolled into one. If you are not already completely plastered when entering this pub, then don't bother, as the people in there will make you question the worth of humanity if you are sober!

live lounge, Leeds

Upon reflection my original assessment was a bit hard. This is a quite nice bar, with skilled bar staff and quite good music. Like the previous comment, I just took exception to the amount of reviews that appeared to be written by marketing agents, Zoe Strimpel, the bar itself, or someone who's day job is to write commercial radio jingles. If the product is good then let nature take its course, and it will rise to the top. There is no need to manipulate this site as it makes a mockery of the whole point of it being here. An ok bar, so six or seven out of ten. In fairness, this place is a much more pleasant drinking experience than the Hawley Arms around the corner, which on my last visit appeared to have transformed itself from being a nice old boozer into sodom and gomorrah...

Oaklands, Littleover

I used to live just up the road to this pub, in those days it used to be called the Panther and was on of those bungalow style pubs built by the council in the 1960s. I was too scared to even enter it. Nowadays my mum goes there and says it is ok, but there are still a few loonies hanging out by the front door who usually glare at you as you go in, and a tin hat is definitely recommended.

live lounge, Leeds

Interesting bar, although waiting 20 mins for five pissed up girls to decide what cocktail they want, then waiting another 20 mins for the 'fit' barman (i'm a straight man so what do I care) to make them is not my idea of fun - especially when all you want is 2 beers. I also suspect that a lot of the glowing reviews for this bar are made up by, or on behalf of the bar itself. When you click on their user profile the account has either been suspended or it is the only review they have ever left. Don't believe everything you read...

The Exeter Arms, Derby

I heard that this pub has been closed down - if it has it is a great shame - it was a nice place.

The Golden Eagle, Bond Street

Great little pub, full of friendly locals, who are a bit strange - but that is what makes the place. Feels like stepping back in time which for me is a good thing. They have piano evenings on Fridays and the beer is top quality too.

Latelys, West Hampstead

This place reminds me of Dick Emery - it's awful but I like it.

The Bell House, Camden

Great pub, nice old landlady, great canalside beer garden and an assortment of dogs - which is always a good thing (except when they shit round the back). Nice Summer Solstice on tap last time I went. Off the beaten track, so hopefully not likely to be given the pine and beige treatment, but not rammed all the time so probably on the 'at-risk of being turned into yuppie flats' list. This kind of worry gives me a nervous breakdown.

The Golden Lion Inn, Padstow

I like this pub - is a great place when old Oss comes out in May!

5 Jul 2007 20:54

The Stag, Belsize Park

The best pub in this area, thankfully free of braying Nathan Barleys. A friendly landlady (from Derbyshire) and nice dogs roaming about the place. And the best beer garden in the whole of London.

5 Jul 2007 20:43

The Harp, Covent Garden

Great pub, especially for central London. Nice guest ales and a landlord and landlady of character!

5 Jul 2007 20:19

The Square and Compass, Worth Matravers

Great pub, and in a lovely location - great beer garden out the front which looks like a stone circle that has been trashed by the locals! Nice beers too, always go here for a pastie and a pint when i'm in the area.

5 Jul 2007 20:15

The Three Stags Heads, Wardlow Mires

Best pub in England, bar none. Soaked in history but not like stepping into a museum - the dogs and impromptu music see to that. Great ale from Abbeydale, and Geoff and Pat actually are friendly once they get used to you...

5 Jul 2007 20:03

The Charmbury Arms, Twerton

This pub is not rubbish, it is a hidden gem! Built into the terraced houses of this lovely street it has an unassuming character, a nice old interior, decent beer and friendly bar staff. I'm from London and they didn't give me any 'you ain't local' looks! Please don't renovate or sell!

5 Jul 2007 19:58

The Lord Clyde, Borough

Nice boozer, with friendly locals who are still local, which is increasingly rare in London. Nice old interior too, and good beer.
