Since the landlady from the Riverside moved here it has got dramatically better (as the Riverside has got worse!). Good ales and very good food. Only complaint is the regulars that insist on sitting at the bar and pointedly refuse to let anyone else get near it.

Plus points: cheap.
Negatives: Ever smaller ale choice as they give more and more pumps over to strong cider for students, the slowest service in the known universe, dirty and a bit tired.

The Railway Tavern, Chelmsford
The best pub in Chelmsford by some distance. 8 brilliantly kept ales always available, friendly staff, landlord/lady who are proper publicans and truly know how to run a pub and treat their clientele. Can't recommend highly enough. 11/10

The White Horse, Chelmsford
Used to drink in here a few years back and thought the beer was much better then - been a bit hit and miss the last few times I've been in. Refurb is a big improvement though.
