The Lord Palmerston, Dartmouth Park

Visited this pub today after a hiatus of around six months. We were after an early Sunday lunch. Matter of factly the food was good, but I really can't get my head around paying 15 for a roast dinner. I guess its par for the course in the area, but ultimately, Lord Palmerston, you're not that good. 6/10 it is.

The Horse and Cart, Peasmarsh

I visited this pub with it's new landlord over the christmas period and I have to say I was very unimpressed by the food. Essentially the whole menu was fried. No thanks. What a shame, this did used to be an excellent pub.

The Royal Oak, Bethnal Green

Visited this pub today and am having conflicting opinions on it. Firstly, food... excellent, but at 14.50 for a main meal bloody pricey. The beer seemed fine but at 3.50 also not exactly cheap and the pint glasses were no-where near filled up.

I was warned of the rude staff however I actually thought they were ok, albeit very hungover, but been there done that. Can't really knock 'em for it.

Would be a nice local boozer but probably won't be eating there again anytime soon!

The Elephant and Castle, Kensington

Nice place. Serve a good pint. Quite unpretentious and fun. I work round the corner so this is a cosy little retreat post stress.

The Buck's Head, Camden

It's a bar really, not a pub basically. It's ok in here. Drinks are quite expensive but that's a given in Camden. Friendly staff, eclectic music and muted tvs. Always seem to have fun in this pub, always a pretty good atmosphere.

2 Apr 2008 10:35

The Barfly Club, Chalk Farm

Granted this is more of a music venue than a pub but jesus. Toilets are disgusting. Staff were quite rude and those horrible fruit fly type things which congregate in toilets were EVERYWHERE on the bar(s). (and indeed the toilets). The place needs properly cleaning. Disgusting.

The Bedford Arms, Rye

Love this place. Definitely one for the locals though.

15 Jul 2007 16:17

The Ypres Castle Inn, Rye

Why is this in the top 40 pubs? Seriously.

I once worked in this place when it was the heaving 'place to be' in town. Now look at it.

Ruined.

24 Apr 2007 21:37

The Water Rats, St Pancras

Snakebite is the way forward in this place.

Not too bad, saw a decent band there. Need to fix the sofas and the toilets too! (as you can see into the ladies from the gents.)

8 Apr 2007 22:05

The Bull and Gate, Kentish Town

Nice place, decent pint.

8 Apr 2007 22:01

The Unicorn, Kentish Town

Interesting. Relatively clean place from what i can gather on my brief stop today. Pint of Carling wasn't up to scratch though, the glass was disgustingly dirty and the beer tasted rubbish anyway, so 1/6th of a pint later we are off. (Well, when the misses finished her bulmers.)

8 Apr 2007 22:00

The Robin Hood, Icklesham

Great pub. Packed but great! Hastings should get off his high horse!

12 Bar Club, Soho

This place is crazy. It looks nothing from the inside but it opens up at the back. It's like the Crobar but full of acoustic fans as opposed to metal heads.

Not a bad pint of lager, and not overly expensive either!

Well worth a visit if you are looking for some quality acoustic music.

24 Mar 2007 13:50

The George Inn, Rye

This is the bar of the George Hotel.

EXPENSIVE, fact.

But just as a hotel should be it's clean, tidy, well furnished and the staff are polite and knowledgeable.

24 Mar 2007 13:45

Big Red, Holloway

Finally got round to visiting this place.

Friendly-ish atmosphere, not a bad pint, and at 2.30 for a pint of Carling not a bad price! (although for some reason I think this might have been wrong.)

A real 'alternative' bar, rock and roll on the jukebox and piercings and tattoos serving the drinks.

Didn't try the food but seemed fairly expensive for general pub grub.

6 Nov 2006 18:25

The Ship Inn, Winchelsea Beach

Two words: Shepherd Neame!

Was once THE pub of the area. Standards have slipped somewhat these days but you can still get a fairly decent pint in there. Haven't eaten so no comment.

26 Oct 2006 02:02

The William the Conqueror, Rye Harbour

A few years back a nice old couple used to run this place, Ken, i think was his name, hers I forget. Visiting this pub way back then it was busy and on a weekend absoloutly packed... so what has happened now?

Not that I blame Shepherd Neame entirely, but WHY!!! Exensive beer, kept reasonably well, but still Shepherd Neame. Why do they destroy pubs so?

Graced only by it's location!

26 Oct 2006 01:55

The Slug and Lettuce, Bristol

Typical crap really. Busy, chavvy, unintelligent bar staff, horrificly loud music.

23 Oct 2006 03:44

The Coronation Tap, Clifton

Went there on Saturday night. Tried the 'Exhibition' - not a cheap drink at 2 a half, but when you realise it's 12% it makes more sense. Was absoloutely packed, two people had been sick in different parts of the pbu and the plastic glasses weren't really to my liking; BUT, really good atmosphere and a real 'olde' feel to it.

Looses major points for bar staff being too busy serving to clean up vomitus ha... not that i'd want to do it either, but none the less.

23 Oct 2006 03:42

Crobar, Soho

This place is filthy and disgusting. It should be closed down going on the state of its toilets and IT'S EXCELLENT.

This place does not pretend to be anything at all. Even a pub, seemingly. No draught anything, it's bottles or cans and that's about it unless you like your whisky, which fortunately I do. Excellent range. The bar staff look like they've just been dropped off by their hells angels boyfriends, and the jukebox looks like it's been filled by them too. Went there with a mutal friend to meet a band he was working with and thoroughly enjoyed a can of red stripe... my standards may have thoroughly slipped but with a bit of Sabbath playing in the background I felt about 16 again. Can't complain about the place.

19 Oct 2006 02:08

The Black Cap, Camden

I'm not gay, and I didn't use the toilets.

Went there not knowing it was a 'gay' pub, but after hearing, not caring. Friendly service, no ale; not too bad food. The menu was very Wetherspoons-esque, but the steak my partner had was cooked to perfection just as ordered and was good value for money.

19 Oct 2006 02:04

The Coronet, Holloway

What a WASTE.

Quite insulting really, a beautiful old Cinema converted into a regular rubbish 'spoons.

The decoration inside is really something else and is undoubtedly one of the best looking Wetherspoons i've ever visited, it's just a shame that the stunning interior has to share the same space as the bog standard food and service. Still, they sell Koppaberg like all Wetherspoons, so there's one bonus for you.

19 Oct 2006 02:01

The Pilot Inn, Lydd

Maybe it's changed hands since 'David' reviewed it but you'd be lucky to get a pint of Greene King anything, let alone IPA in a Shepherd Neame pub.

Pretty rubbish really. 'Chavvy' does sum it up seemingly well; potentially a very good pub with it's location but is not exercised at all with it's menu and as-per-norm limited Shepherd Neame beer range. Avoid unless you are desperate.

19 Oct 2006 01:58

The Cellars, Bexhill on Sea

This place is a bit of a locals haunt upstairs, but a family friend had a function downstairs in their cellar and it was all very pleasant, no ale though... but the lager was kept well.

Good selection of spirits and a decent sized function room for 30-40 people, nice and clean and tidy.

19 Oct 2006 01:55

Ye Olde Kings Head, Battle

Went to the quiz night there a couple of times last summer. Good atmosphere and fairly good beer. Didn't eat though and in fact don't even remember seeing a menu... mainly because it's got a peculiar layout. Sometimes it could be classified as character but not in this case. More an annoyance when you need a wee but are unsure in which direction to run.

19 Oct 2006 01:53

Ye Olde Pump House, Hastings

Sh*t and scream pub. (Shepherd Neame.)

Worth a visit purely for its decor, inside and out. Has a lot of character and despite being SN, a nice place for a fairly decent pint... if you like that kind of thing.

19 Oct 2006 01:50

Revolver, Hastings

This is a vodka bar with some computers for internet access. A novel idea, comfy chairs, low key lighting and a good selection of spirits. Not bad at all.

19 Oct 2006 01:46

Robert de Mortain, Hastings

This place is an oddity, large and spacious its interior is old and the place generally looks a bit... well, odd, heh.

Beer was pretty good but the food was typically... chain pubish. Nothing spectacular on the menu, and I could imagine this place being full of louts on a football day. Is however infamous for being the home of Hastings Rock so immediately gets kudos for that.

19 Oct 2006 01:45

The Clown, Hastings

This pub should probably be closed for so many violations of health and safety, and that includes the staff.

HOWEVER - The atmosphere is strange in there, possibly because everyone is too pissed to care, but at the same time nosey enough to want to talk to you.

Not bad beer, small variety but what they do do is ok.

19 Oct 2006 01:40

Yates's, Hastings

Pretty much the same as any Yates' in the country. Nothing spectacular, nothing new, just, average chain pub with average chain pub food and average chain pub drink.

19 Oct 2006 01:37

The Street Bar, Hastings

This tiny little place does excellent light-bites. The lager isn't fantastic but it's got a decent coffee machine and that's whats important of a lunch time.

19 Oct 2006 01:36

The John Logie Baird, Hastings

It's a Wetherspoons. They are all the same. Don't go in there expecting good food or particularly good service. It's exactly like going to a Beefeater... people should know better.

The only reason this place is busy, is because its cheap. I go in there for a pint, I go in there for a bite to eat, but I never go in there expecting anything great, and that is the entire point of Wetherspoons - cheap and 'ok'... and this, is the same for ANY Wetherspoons in the country... some are better than others, but this is just your average. No worse no better.

19 Oct 2006 01:34

The Carlisle, Hastings

Well you'd only go into this pub really if you knew what you were letting yourself in for... it's clearly not a family pub and it's clientel are clearly missing a few brain cells, but it's all a part of the places charm and it's good for one thing - a noisy night out.

Don't drink the beer from the taps, you'll regret it. But do go and see a band down there, experience the atmosphere and generally revel in the fact that you probably could do better than this if you tried to run a pub. It's actually very entertaining... 'only in Hastings'.

19 Oct 2006 01:32

The Two Sawyers, Pett

This place was excellent. Was.

Not anymore.

When the brewery next door was in full swing you'd be guarenteed a bad pint, but it was a bit of fun... something different and sometimes, the beer wasn't bad at all. Sometimes.. Those days have however long gone, the food is sub par, the beer isn't worth bothering with, stick to bottles and the waitresses... well, what can one say. "GCSE"

19 Oct 2006 01:29

The Smugglers, Pett Level

Can someone give the old woman behind the bar a personality please? It was like being served by a plank of wood. Old pub with great potential, just not excercised very well. With it's location this place could be heaving given the right management, seemingly it 'tides' over (ha ha - the sea.) ok but with it's size, should be so much more.

Beer fair/moderate food don't bother.

19 Oct 2006 01:24

The Royal Oak, Pett

Good beer here, not overly great food though... the building is an interesting layout and if it's en route worth a visit but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there.

19 Oct 2006 01:21

The Queens Head, Icklesham

Well kept ales, not so well kept lager. The food is moderate but pricey. Being local and being raised around the fish industry I see little justification for local cod being priced around the 10 mark.

Worth a visit for the views, not a place i'd go back to reguluarly though, my wallet isn't big enough.

19 Oct 2006 01:19

The Robin Hood, Icklesham

'Hastings' pointed out the leaky resturaunt. That happened when I was there too, and I also did notice a couple of cobwebs; must disagree on the food/drink though.

The beer, ok, is Greene King. No points for that really, although when forced to drink IPA, the quality is important and this was pretty good stuff. The food however made it... i've eaten there two or three times in the last couple of months... the food is certainly above average and definitely so in regards to price. I'm interested to know what you had that was 'cheap and nasty' from the menu just so I can avoid it myself.

Certainly prefer this place to the other pub in the village, essentially because it doesn't pretend to be anything its not.

19 Oct 2006 01:17

Gritti Palace, Hastings

Very random little place. Not really a pub... it's a bar.

Enjoyable when the Weather isn't too bad thanks to the views, good cup of coffee for sure.

19 Oct 2006 00:54

The Green Owl, Camber

Very clean pub, really stands out. Beer is of a good quality and the food to boot.

Only quibble is that the menu isn't overly expansive... but I guess that's the beauty of it. Be good at a few things rather than awful at a lot.

19 Oct 2006 00:52

The Inkerman Arms, Rye Harbour

Good fish and chips here. Not a bad pub, just a shame that it's hidden away in Rye Harbour. Would certainly be busier if it was in Rye town.

Beers not half bad but if no guest ales are on you're stuck with the Greene King beer range.

19 Oct 2006 00:51

The Standard Inn, Rye

I like this pub. It's one of the few in the area i do like. The food was awful, but they've now implemented a fresh menu which incorporates better-than-it-was food at quite an expensive price for what you get. Haven't tried the 'resturaunt' out the back as it's a little pricey and you have to go for one of the set menus.

What I do like however, is the pubs ability to be busy most nights of the week. A lot of youngsters seemingly meet there and subsequently it can be somewhat rowdy at times... but there's nothing offensive, and you can often get a pint of Harveys. One of Ryes better pubs.

19 Oct 2006 00:49

The Ship Inn, Rye

Much better now than it ever has been in the last six or seven years. The food is alright if not a little overpriced, and the beer quality is certainly better than it ever was... but that's not to say it was excellent... just, ok. Never stayed there, probably never will, can stumble home instead.

19 Oct 2006 00:47

Ye Olde Bell Inn, Rye

Great potential not excercised. Needs gutting and starting again, preferably leaving a few of the benches out so that you can actually breathe in there when it's busy.

Pretty good beer quality, staff could do with an IQ injection though.

19 Oct 2006 00:45

The Ypres Castle Inn, Rye

What happened... seriously. Once the jewel of Rye, now... well, what can one say. Extremely expensive, and most definitely not worth the hard earned cash for what you get. The beer is kept 'ok' but not great, even the lager wasn't perfect and the young lad behind the bar when i went last needed help to pour a lager top for someone ahead of me.

The food was expensive and although not too bad really wasn't good value for money. It would appear that this place is reserved for those who enjoy paying excessively for a sub par product.

19 Oct 2006 00:43

The Union Inn, Rye

Once upon a time this place was thriving. Packed on a Sunday, packed in fact, on a Saturday... who ever the chef was back then (and this is maybe... six years ago?) he was good. His food attracted locals and visitors alike, and the beer wasn't half bad either. These days, it's a sorry state. To be fair, it's not exactly awful, but the general feel is that it wants to be something its not. It's not a youngsters pub. They don't go there, and they probably never will, so get over it and focus your attention on improving your menu.

19 Oct 2006 00:40

The Queens Head, Rye

Joke of a pub. Gluten free food? Who cares. I'd rather go to a pub with general decent food than awful gluten free options. The beer was definitely not right either. As for the atmosphere... well, if one ever develops please let me know.
