The Leadburn Inn, Leadburn

This place is well and truly open: fully rebuilt, refurbished and full of life.

Large family oriented pub / restaurant - large and well designed children's play area. Food is plentiful, of good quality and value. Beer on tap included Belhaven Best and Deuchars IPA.

A pleasant place to visit, particularly on rainy weekend afternoons if children are bored and need to let off steam, and I need a pint and a bite to eat.

The Winton Arms, Pencaitland

Beer of dubious quality and no use having a chat in here as you won't be able to hear yourselves think above the din created by the telly turned up to full volume, invariably showing football or rugby. Pretty rubbish, all in all.

The Elphinstone Arms, Elphinstone

A rat pit, pure and simple.

The New Plough, Tranent

I agree with the previous poster: it's a very rough bar indeed and the staff are rude. Tranent can be a rough place and this establishment reflects that. I thought the bar and internal decor were actually rather good and the beer of encouraging quality. However, not to be frequented at any time after 6pm, as it is quite dangerous after then.

The Lady Susan, Inchview

This place is closed. It's now a chinese takeaway.

The Railway Tavern, Prestonpans

Really a rather rough boozer. Not a particularly wholesome clientele. It's a place for people who want to stand and get drunk. Very drunk, infact. I don't think I'll go out of my way to visit this place again.

Market Inn, Sandwich

This 'pub' smells like a urinal, is absolutely rancid, the beer is foul and the patrons look like they've just been released from one of our nation's institutions of penal correction. Also: the bar staff are utterly clueless, rude and there were bits in my pint. Urgh !

I don't quite understand what the local Environmental Health officers are doing as the place is still trading. It shouldn't be.

The Pheasant, Haddington

Pub now boarded up. Would be very surprised if it ever re-opened.

The Isles Inn, Portree

Stayed here over-night a little while ago. We found the rooms to be very dirty, the en-suite awful and the breakfast barely edible.

We tried to eat there the previous evening, we had to send the food back as it had completely congealed - we went to a pub elsewhere in Portree to eat (where we enjoyed it very much).

The beer was off - I had to drink lager as the Skye Brewery ale tasted like stale acid (normally the brewery's beer tastes great); to top it off, the staff and landlady are very rude and unhelpful people.

All in all, a very unpleasant experience. Shan't be going back in a hurry.

Bull Inn, Brasted

I do like the Bull Inn. A very good Shepherd's Neame pub set along the A25 on the eastern edge of Brasted. A good range of beer available, although I seem to recall that Bishop's Finger isn't on draught any longer, which is a shame.

The Swan, Great Chart

This place is generally frequented by very loud, very rough people.

Located in the pretty hamlet / village of Great Chart, its location is a little too near to south Ashford for comfort. As a result, it is plagued by the very rough people from the Stanhope estate who decide to have a little jaunt out into the country in order to ruin, what would otherwise be, a really rather pretty little country pub. Shame. Chavs 1 Decent Folk 0 !

The Masons Arms, Belhaven

A very welcoming and cosy bar area. They always have on tap two real ales: the regular being Belhaven 80/- with a guest ale (when I last visited it was Orkney's Dark Island on).

Being but a stone's close to the Belhaven brewery it's not surprising that Belhaven beers do feature rather prominently amongst its range.

The barman is very knowledgeable about the beer, it's always well kept and tastes just as it should.

The restaurant does a fairly brisk trade in the evenings - the fare is actually very good and reasonably priced, too.

All in all, a recommended venue either for a quiet evening's drink, or for a lunch time pint in the summer whilst sitting in the garden out the back.

The Man of Kent, Tonbridge

I lived in Tonbridge for two years, just around the corner from this pub - but never actually paid it a visit.

Then, over the Xmas period just gone, I visited twice and found the place to be extremely good. The beer - Harveys - was excellent, with a very friendly service.

The pub has a fairly low ceiling and snug feel about it. There is a TV in the pub, but it isn't too intrusive - and plenty of corners to hide away from the footie crowd (if there's a game on).

It has quite an olde worldy charm about it - feels just like a real pub should - a place for conversation and relaxation.

The Union Inn, Rye

The Times recommends this place for its food. Or so they advertised, at least.

Didn't get to pop in for a swift half, but did look very warm and inviting from the outside (particularly as it was a cold winter's day when I was walking by).

The George Inn, Rye

This place does feel very 'hotel-ish' upon entering, but once you get through to the back bar area, it becomes a little less formal.

The real ales on tap were really rather top-notch (if a little pricey), and service from the staff was excellent - very polite and efficient.

It seems that a nice crowd drink in this place, no rowdy yobs or youths.

The New Inn, Sevenoaks

I've visited this establishment previously. I soon realised the mistake I'd made after some drunken tattoed yob started staring over at my friend and I. He then proceeded with the dreaded words: "What are you lookin' at ?".

I didn't reply, and merely downed the little of the pint left in my glass and immediately left.

If you're wanting to visit here, have family and children - make sure you've plenty of life insurace before doing so.

Beer is awful, crowd even worse.

Don't listen to 'DJMATTNEAVE' - he might well be the tatooed man I encountered.

The Worlds End, Edinburgh

Okayish boozer. Had the nick-name of 'The Stranglers' for some years after the infamous 'World's End' murders in 1977.

The Fox and Hounds, Biggin Hill

Years ago this used to be a quiet country pub, selling reasonable beer - with a garden for families to sit in the summer, whilst enjoying the early evening sun. The sort of place to go for a quiet pint and a chat.

The rot set in about twelve years ago - the chav element began to appear, but only in small numbers at first. Gradually their frequency of visits and numbers increased. Now this establishment is entirely populated with sovereign ring, gold chain, tattoo, 'rude boy' squad. It's their gaff.

If you don't particularly like pubs full of drunk, yelling, swearing, yobs - best steer well clear of this place. The beer is very poor, the clientele even worse.

The White Hart, Brasted

The food has really gone downhill in the last three years. Spend too long waiting, food often either incorrect or still slightly frozen from when it was heated in the micro-wave.

Beer is very limited, with Bass being the only 'ale' (not real ale, as keg beer - needless to say).

Years ago the food used to be outstanding - but pretty poor in comparison today. Success has brought complacency - they need to seriously up their game as the regular clientele will soon tire of this.

Grog and Gruel, Fort William

Compared to the competition (which is pretty dire in Fort William - and the West Coast in general) it's the best of the bunch.

A good range of alternating real ales - generally good conditioned too.

The only problem with the pub is that it's just a bit dark and depressing. Not much of an atmosphere either (at least the few times I've visited).
