The Cardinal, Victoria

Proper Sam Smith's boozer frequented by proper old geezers and lamentable civil servants. 1.70 a pint of best - you can't go wrong.

Home to Kamilla (tall, brunette) definitely the hottest barmaid in all of Victoria, if not London. Great pub for a game of darts.

Gets proper busy on Friday evenings when hordes of grey-suited, grey-haired, grey-skinned civil servants shuffle in for Joan's/Derek's/Keith's* leaving drink.

St. George's Tavern, Victoria

Weird pub, this, which isn't surprising given its location right close to Victoria train and coach stations. Lots of solitary drinkers. Decent pub for watching sport at. No big screens but you can't help to get a good view of one of the little tellies. Decent cheap ale, too. The Ultimate Burger (half-pounder, cheese, mushrooms, bacon, fried-egg, onion rings) for 6 isn't quite as Ultimate as I'd have liked, but is still pretty Ultimate.

The Shakespeare, Victoria

Really massive, really poor pub. Good as a meeting place for those unfamiliar with Victoria but nowt else. Met up with some mates in here near Christmas and it took the girl about 10 minutes to sort three pints of Guinness. She was scraping the foam off with a straw and all sorts! Woeful!

The Walrus Bar and Hostel, Waterloo

Used to be the Red Lion, a proper old boozer. Now a Hoegaarden, leatherette sofa establishment. One of the better refurbs when it first opened, but is now pretty rubbish.

The Crown and Cushion, Waterloo

The pub equivalent of walking on thin ice. Always seems like the sort of place where you're liable to get a punch in the chops, even though I've seen no evidence to suggest it. They seem to change the paint job on the outside every year - I've seen it bright yellow and bright mauve - proper Del Boy specials. Beer garden in the summer. Not much to shout about in the way of ale, but the it's alright. Cooked grub is decent and good value, but once saw someone get a rough looking cheese sarny and walk out.

The Camel & Artichoke, Waterloo

Erm, yeah, they've got a big screen so it's alright for watching football.

About the only positive thing I can say, really. The 'modern' refurb hasn't done it any favours either, a la the Camel in Victoria.

The Elusive Camel, Victoria

A few years back this was your typical Aussie-owned run-down type of establishment, but you knew where you stood. Think they even used to have a couple of pool tables too. Agree with previous comments that the new refurbishment is awful. 3 a pint, which is unacceptable in this part of town. Needless to say, not an ale in sight.

The Tower Tavern, Fitzrovia

A little local diamond. They got 3 low-res plasmas in last year, alright if the atmosphere's good. Watched the England v France game here in 2004, no trouble even though I was wearing my Gers shirt. Inhabited by real people rather than plastic newmedia Jemimas and Ollies - a rarity in that part of town. Sound.

The Crown and Sceptre, Fitzrovia

For what it is - an alright pub in the summer when standing outside, and nice interior. Decent grub. You get a few 'blazers, ironic tshirts and jeans' nobs pretending to be public school, but they're easily ignored.

The Yorkshire Grey, Fitzrovia

Used to be a good boozer according to some my older colleagues, but its clientele makes it a charmless venue. Perhaps I was expecting too much.

Seems to be priding itself on being a haunt for radio people (in other words too ugly to be on TV).

The Colonies, Westminster

Bar staff are either deliberately slow or mildly cretinous - not sure which.

However, their homemade pies and saussies are worth the visit. I think they're only dished up at lunchtime, though. You get the odd decent guest ale here, too.

Good 'beer yard' for sunny days.

The Feathers, St James's

Used to be alright but has gone down the swanny. Looks like the place has been stripped of its assets and very soulless. However, the food's pretty good.

Met up with a lady friend of mine there (5'10, blonde, rather pleasant) and anyone would think that they'd never seen a girl before. An old bill rattler, it being the nearest to Scotland Yard.

The Cask and Glass, Victoria

Small but perfectly formed. Good ale.

One of the better non-garden outside areas in Viccy - which ain't saying much, I know.

1 Aug 2005 17:22

The Travellers Tavern, Victoria

More or less an extension of the Viccy Coach Station waiting room, with Polish 'visitors' milling around looking for work. Perhaps they should offer to work behind the bar - they couldn't do any worse than those currently employed. Avoid.

The Phoenix, Victoria

Good little (but big) rattler for a quiet lunchtime pint. Some decent standard ales available, the Bombardier being particularly well served. Never seen any guest ales here. Excellent bar-staff with little turnover. Dartboard doesn't see much use as it's stuck in the corner behind the big screen, but one of the lasses will happily wind the screen up if there's nowt on. Hasn't been too busy, even when the cricket's been on.
