The Crown Hotel, Chertsey

The Crown has now had a massive refurbishment and on my visit was packed. A large L-shaped bar is now to the left as you walk in and there is plenty of seats inside and out. The live music is in the "old" bar area as per usual. Good range of ales, Youngs Bitter, Special and Gold (all with new trendy pump-clips) plus a guest, Windsor & Eton Guardsman. Also stocks Meantime London Pale Ale and London Lager if you fancy a colder beer. It is certainly the type of pub Chertsey town centre needs.

The George, Croydon

Cavernous JD pub with two distinct drinking areas, one mainly for food. Fantastic range of ales with showcases given to Oakham and Dark Star beers on my visit. Also tried two new keg beers brewed by Marstons; a craft lager which was very distinctive and creamy, plus an American style IPA called Shipyard, which is brewed with the help of a brewer from Portland, USA. All the usual Wetherspoons features. Well worth the visit!

The Golden Grove, Chertsey

This pub had an extensive makeover earlier this year and is now a great food and beer venue. Haven't tried the food (but will soon!) as menu looks very interesting with plenty of choice. If you like your ale they run a loyalty scheme where you get your tenth pint free! On my Monday evening ,very quick visit, they had 4 guest beers - Goddards Fuggle-dee-dum, Moorhouses Blonde Witch, Skinners Betty Stogs and Hook Norton Lion. The regular ales are Pride and Doom Bar plus Golden Grove brewed by Cottage brewery. Friendly, knowledgeable staff and pretty busy for a Monday night too. Will most definitely be back for both food and ale!

2 Sep 2013 19:50

The Weir Hotel, Walton on Thames

Plenty of outside seating overlooking the Thames. Food looked ok but didn't try. Three ales - Abbot, Doom and Andwells Gold Muddler as a guest plus two real ciders in small polypins on the bar.

28 Aug 2013 20:40

The White Swan, Covent Garden

Nicholson's owned pub with very old, characterful interior. Ever changing selection of ales plus the very tasty Outliers Blonde from Aspall's the cider makers on draught. Friendly, knowledgeable staff.

26 Aug 2013 20:39

Ship Inn, Langstone

Busy, waterside Fullers pub with lots of outside tables, some protected from the sea breeze by perplex screens - very good idea. Even had a small patch of synthetic grass and a few deck-chairs! Four ales available on this visit - Summer Ale, London Pride, HSB and the award-winning Seafarers Ale. Food was good with plenty of choice plus half a dozen specials chalked up. Can get very busy but worth trying.

26 Aug 2013 20:32

The Old House at Home, Chichester

Rural pub in a lovely, quiet hamlet and an ideal stop after a walk around the Chidham peninsular. Nice to see 6 handpumps dispensing an excellent selection of ales, Ringwood Best, Doom Bar, London Pride, Otter Amber, Langton Chidham Best and Bowman Swift One. The main meals looked very good as well. Excellent cream tea with freshly made scones kept the wife happy! Well worth seeking out.

26 Aug 2013 20:25

The Percy Lambert, Weybridge

Large town centre pub. Attractive food menu (didn't try anything) and a good selection of ales served from the large bar which dominates the centre of the pub. Fairly quiet early evening but probably gets a bit hectic later. Live music at weekends.

11 Jun 2013 22:25

The Watermans Arms, Hersham

Strictly a pub for the locals. By locals I mean the regulars who hog the bar and get their beers topped up first even if you have been at the bar a few minutes waiting to be served. At least they had some decent music in the function room. Bland selection of beers on offer.

11 Jun 2013 22:19

The Carpenters Arms, Bransgore

I visit every couple of months when in the New Forest and have never been disappointed. The food is wholesome and quickly served. Pies are homemade and superb plus there is always fresh fish. Beers vary - sometimes all Fullers, sometimes a few guests. On my last visit there was Pride, Brewer's Bragg (a new Fuller's beer), Ringwood Best and the flavoursome Hobsons Dark Mild. All in all a tidy pub!

27 May 2013 21:19

Ring O Bells, Chagford

Enjoyed a great lunch stop on the way back to London from Cornwall as it's about 5 miles off the A30. Superb home cooked food with daily specials. My Green Thai Fish curry was excellent and our friends meals were also top quality. Three local ales, Princetown Brewery Jail Ale and Dartmoor IPA plus Teignworthy Reel Ale. The pub interior is full of polished brass and dark wood settles with a huge fireplace to one side of the bar. Didn't notice if there was a garden. Worth the detour!

23 May 2013 19:28

Bullers Arms, Chagford

Pub closed and boarded up.

23 May 2013 19:20

The Tinners Arms, Zennor

Tiny, atmospheric pub in beautiful village. Small garden and outside terrace suppliments the narrow single bar. Plenty of diners and drinkers (mostly hikers). Three ales were available, Tinners Ale (brewed for the pub by St. Austell but is most likely Trelawny re-badged, Sharp's Own and Zennor Mermaid. Both the Sharp's beers were fine. Hasn't changed much over the years.

23 May 2013 19:18

The Ship Inn, Mousehole

Had an enjoyable pint of Trelawny early evening on a cold May day. Not very busy but can imagine it is a bit of a tourist trap in high season.

23 May 2013 19:11

The Queens Arms, St Just

Great little pub just off the St. Just to Pendeen road. Excellent home cooked food with plenty of choice. Three ales on tap were Skinners Heligan Honey, Penryn Cornish Sunset (excellent!) and Doom Bar, but these change regularly. Worth exploring the local mine working nearby on the coast. Well worth a detour to visit.

23 May 2013 19:07

The Star Inn, St Just

Outstanding pub. Real celtic feel with the ceiling covered with the full range of celtic flags. Last visited 10 or more years ago and it stills remains a haven of cosiness. Live folk on Mondays is a must! Serves most of the St. Austell beer range. A must visit pub!

23 May 2013 19:01

The Wellington Hotel, St Just

Totally agree with the last comment. We seemed to be interupting his chat with his mates at the bar. Funny regime for a pub with very close competition (3 other pubs within 30 yards!).

23 May 2013 18:54

Kings Arms, St Just

Cosy pub on the main square. Friendly, welcoming staff and really good, imaginative food. Two ales (Tribute and Proper Job) were both excellent. Well worth a visit.

23 May 2013 18:50

The Commercial Hotel, St Just

Stayed here for a few days while exploring the area. Great small hotel! Sharp's Doom Bar and Cornish Coaster plus local Polgoon cider. Very good food with themed nights. Curry night, £8-95 plus a drink, was a winner!

23 May 2013 18:46

The Woburn Arms, Addlestone

This place is closed now and set to become a Day Nursery. I've lived in addlestone for 15 years and visited the pub once, which was one time to many. Sad to see pubs close but this place seemed to be doomed.

8 May 2013 21:38

The Town Hall Tavern, Chertsey

The Thyme At The Tavern is probably your best bet if you are looking for consistantly good quality ale at a reasonable price. Apart from a couple of national beers (usually Courage , Theakstons and Marstons) there are always two local ales. Windsor & Eton, Tillingbourne, Binghams, Surrey Hills and Ascot feature regularly. Live music Friday and Saturday, either acoustic or bluesy rock. The bright and modern interior, with bare floorboards is possibly not to everyones liking, as indeed can be the piped music! Still a great pub!

16 Apr 2013 23:02

Lowlander, Covent Garden

One of my favourite bars for beer and food. Can get busy weekends so you need to book or get there early if you want to eat. There is always something different on draught to suppliment the extensive bottled range of Low Country beers. I tried two Troubador beers, Obscura and IPA, both on draught, while my wife went for the Chimay Triple and Rouge. Food was superb too. Of the many dishes on the menu that I fancied I went for the Pulled Pork, while my wife had Sirloin Steak. Very good value considering the quality and rarity of the beers. Will be returning in a couple of week!

16 Apr 2013 22:49

The Cross Keys, Covent Garden

Visited for the first time and can't understand why I hadn't stumbled across it before. Very tiny and dark inside with the walls covered in mainly 60's pop and rock memorabilia. Excellent range of local ales (Brodies, Redemption and Windsor & Eton) and very good Guiness too. It was pretty crowded for early evening Saturday. Well worth a visit.

16 Apr 2013 22:38

Waterfront Inn, Brierley Hill

Handy little Wetherspoons if staying at the nearby Copthorne Hotel as it just across the canal. Modern interior and outside drinking area. Being smaller they didn't have the vast range of beers normally available (no real cider) in other outlets but still had a few tasty well kept ales (two from Backyard Brewhouse, Walsall were very good indeed). Slightly different food menu as well. Worth a visit.

31 Mar 2013 19:25

The Windsor Castle Inn, Lye

What a great pub!! Brewery at the rear producing an amazing range of quality ales, all of which were available from the 10 handpumps. Visited on two nights and tried the lot!! Everyone was a winner with Thin Ice probably my favourite. Real cider as well plus a great range of bottles. The food was outstanding, but essential to book at weekends. Will most definately try to visit again when in the area.

31 Mar 2013 19:19

The Crown Hotel, Chertsey

Good live music Fridays & Saturdays. It is expensive and the beer on offer is nothing special. I had a few pints of Winter Warmer which were very pleasant but nothing like the original Youngs version.

7 Jan 2013 22:18

The Assembly Rooms, Epsom

Cavernous Wetherspoons pub. New food menu due soon but there were a few specials on today. The Hoi Sin Duck noodles were good. Beer range today was less than inspiring but what I tried was very good indeed (Directors, Broadside and 49er).

7 Jan 2013 22:13

The Cricketers, Row Town

Good pub for live music, bands most Saturdays and regular jam sessions. Decent range of ales (Pride, Speckled Hen, Doom) and food looked good although didn't try.

16 Dec 2012 15:16

Brauhaus Schreckenskammer, Cologne

A very local bar adjacent to the railway line bewteen the main station and Hansaring. Impressive wood panelled interior bedecked with military paintings. Kolsch was pleasant enough and the food looked traditional. Worth a visit.

8 Dec 2012 09:21

The Wellington, Strand

Pleasant Nicholsons pub - lots of ales and the full range of food. I think they do a good job in central London and think that you get value for money in all their pubs. Tourist trap? It's central London!

11 Nov 2012 19:51

The Kings Arms, Waterloo

A really great pub in many ways. Helpful bar staff and a suberb selection of ales. The setting, in one of the most atmospheric streets in London is not to be missed. A great retreat from the hectic South Bank a few minutes away!

11 Nov 2012 19:41

The Royal Oak, Borough

I was a bit disappionted; my first visit and and fan of Harveys beer. Beer was fine but thought the pub a bit grubby. Could do with a good clean. I agree with the last comment - bar staff indifferent, to busy chatting with their mates.

11 Nov 2012 19:36

The Regent, Walton on Thames

Very charcterful Wetherspoons and well run. Used to be the old cinema, hence the long narrow bar. Service always prompt, food good and beer excellent. Unusual for me to stick to one beer but I thought the Greek beer, Koroibos, brewed at Everards in Leicestershire by a brewer from Crete was superb!!

18 Jul 2012 20:17

The Old Goat, Fulwell

Food is always good and the beer selection excellent, but you have to choose wisely. The foreign draught beers are good but the ale is hit and miss. Sent back my vinegary pint only to be told it's meant to be like that! That's strange, as according to the brewery website for that beer I should have been bowled over by elderflower and citric hops! The replacement local ale was ok though.

9 Jul 2012 21:01

Prince Of Wales, Putney

Nice looking pub. Expensive? 4 for a pint of Brakspears Bitter (3.4%) - not great value when you have 2 Wetherspoons pubs 5 minutes walk away.

9 Jul 2012 20:52

The Kilvert's Hotel, Hay on Wye

Popped in for a swift one at lunchtime and got served straight away by a friendly barmaid. But soon the pub filled up and a long queue formed at the bar. There seemed to be plenty of staff serving food but it desparately needs a dedeicated area to order food. Excellent selection of local ales and cider. The Breconshire Brewery Gold Beacon and the Waen Brewery First of the Summer Waen where very good. Didn't eat, but food looked good.

5 Jun 2012 21:37

The Kings Fee, Hereford

Standard Wetherspoons pub with interesting design and modern decor. Food was average compared with some other of the chains pubs, but as usual, the ale was perfect. Good to see a couple of local beers too.

5 Jun 2012 21:29

The Roast Ox, Painscastle

This pub changed hands some while ago and has gone from strength to strength. Gone are the "odd" fake barrels behind the bar, replaced by handpumps serving Thatchers Heritage Cider and 2 guest ales, Otter Bitter and Doom Bar on my visit. Much improved menu and food was wholesome and homemade. Well worth dropping by if in the area!

5 Jun 2012 21:24

The Tichborne Arms, Tichborne

Stumbled upon this idealic pub whilst on a visit to nearby Alresford. Sat in the peaceful, sunny garden for a few pints. The friendly landland pointed out that it was the day when they hand out the Tichborne Dole at the local manor house - a local legend that dates back to the 13th century when flour is handed out to the villagers. Didn't eat there, but the food looked delicious! Beers was served strait from the barrel behind the bar and Ringwood Best, Palmers Copper ale and Brakspears Special were on offer. Hope to return in the summer.

25 Mar 2012 17:59

The Oatland Chaser, Walton on Thames

I discounted the previous reviews as they were so out of date and I'd heard good reports about the food and drink here. I was not disappointed. Food and service was great on a fairly busy Saturday night. Three ales - London Pride, Youngs Bitter, with Red Squirrel Hopfest as the guest ale, which was very good indeed. I will definately return soon and would recommend this pub to friends.

18 Mar 2012 09:52

The Victory Inn, Brighton

The exterior is very striking with green and cream tiles and original stained glass. Always a good selection of mainly local ales (Kings, Hepworth, Dark Star etc). Best described as "homely" and yes, the loos were poor and the tables were a bit grubby and sticky. There's a lot of local competition so I think they will lose trade to the bigger pubs nearby.

27 Dec 2011 09:43

The Pump House, Brighton

Pleasant Nicholsons pub with the usual excellent range of guest beers. Being Boxing Day there was Leeds Brewery Midnight Bell and Rudgate Auld Saint Nic to keep up the Christmas theme. Worth seeking out in an area awash with good pubs.

27 Dec 2011 09:35

The Marble Hill, St Margarets

Went along to the excellent Open Mic night - held the second Sunday of the month. Good atmosphere and an attentive audience. Pub was ok - not a great choice of drinks, only Youngs Bitter on, plus the usual array of lagers, and limited on the non-alcoholic drink front too. Staff seemed hard working and coupled with the quiet, back street location, this place could build up a good reputation as a music venue.

15 Aug 2011 08:34

Woody's, Kingston Upon Thames

I really like Woody's. It's a very pleasant place to sit by the river and watch the world go by. Always top quality ale (usually one from the local Twickenham micro) plus a good range of lagers. Despite being an ale drinker, I nearly always go for the Freedom lager which really hits the spot on a warm day. Excellent food too!! My wife had the Steak sandwich which came with huge hand cut chunky chips, and I went for the interesting named Fish Finger Jenga - both excellent. Well worth the walk down from Kingston bridge.

7 Aug 2011 19:01

The Ailsa Tavern, Twickenham

Went along for the first Open Mic on Sunday night. Excellent evening!! No complaints about the pub, it was a friendly atmosphere and very busy. Recent comments about quality and choice of ale seem to be unfounded. Spitfire, Whitstable Bay and Canterbury Jack were on offer, the latter making a great session beer at 3.5%. Shall return again for the next Open Mic!!

1 Aug 2011 08:28

Euston Tap, Euston

I think the last comment pretty much sumed it up. Odd sort of bar area - the barmaid had trouble reaching the taps, set high up on the wall. Only tried the Camden Lager, (3-70 a pint), which slipped down nicely on a warm afternoon. There are several pubs that specialize in craft beers from far flung places and between 3-50 and 4 per half seems to be the going rate. Most are over 6% so are worth it in my view!

30 Jul 2011 22:48

The Kings Arms, Waterloo

Great pub situated in a historic terrace street. A real throw back to the 40's. Good range of local ales and a quiet, relaxed atmosphere. Worth seeking out if you want to get away from the crowds on the Southbank and enjoy a pint or two.

30 Jul 2011 22:37

The Pontefract Castle, Marylebone

Pretty much what you'd expect from the Nicholsons chain. Characterful pub, pleasant upstairs seating area, a good food menu and prompt service. Hake and chips were good and the beers (Titanic and Moor) were ok too.

30 Jul 2011 22:30

The Kingfisher, Chertsey

I agree with the last comment - and it seems to be across the chain. One more person serving would make all the difference. But when you do get served the beers good and the food's imaginative. I tend to visit when it's less busy, not at peak times because it is a great place to eat and drink.

12 Jun 2011 19:27

The Thames Court, Shepperton

Sunny afternoon - 100 or so people drinking in the garden - 2 people serving and they were miserable - not great.

12 Jun 2011 19:09

CASK Pub and Kitchen, Pimlico

Beer heaven!! Great selection of British ales, all from micros, and some unique keg beers from Germany, Denmark and Norway. Bottled beer section is mind-boggling too! Enjoyed the strong keg beers on offer, one of which was 17.5% and dangerously drinkable! Pricey? If you want quality, uniqueness, great atmosphere, knowledgable friendly staff and be able to drink some of the worlds most stunning beers, then what's the problem? Look forward to my next visit!! PS I believe that a sister pub is to open soon in Clerkenwell.

29 May 2011 09:15

The Victory Inn, Brighton

Visited on our traditional Boxing Day visit to Brighton. Great little pub - 4 local guest ales and 2 real ciders plus excellent mulled wine and helpful staff!! Food looked very good too, but didn't eat. Will make a point of visiting whenever in town.

27 Dec 2010 09:31

The Greyhound, Corfe Castle

Busy pub on the main square - outside seating at the front and a segmented garden at rear with great views of the castle and steam railway. Food a bit hit and miss - depends on what you order. Fish was good. Good selection of ales - Sharpes Doom Bar (seems to be taking over the world!!), Ringwood Best and Keltek Golden Harvest on my visit - all excellent!! Plus local Olivers cider. The first choice when in Corfe, if you can get a seat.

13 Sep 2010 22:37

Bankes Arms Hotel, Corfe Castle

Imposing building on the main square. Dark, wood panelled interior and largish garden running down to the railway with play area. Was busy with live music outside too. Two ales, Ringwood Best and Wadworths 6X.

13 Sep 2010 22:30

The Halfway Inn, Corfe Castle

Visited this fine country pub twice over one weekend. Both times, lunch and evening, were busy. Excellent food menu with plenty of variety and the usual selection of Badger beers. Well laided out inside, but very much aimed at the diner. Would be my first choice for food and drink when next visiting the area.

13 Sep 2010 22:26

The Blue Anchor, Hammersmith

Stopped for a quick pint while walking the Thames Path from Putney to Kew Bridge. Beautiful pub, helpful staff and great beer! Wandle Ale went down a treat. Good place to people watch the endless stream of walkers and cyclist going past.

6 Sep 2010 08:10

Waggon and Horses, Addlestone

This is the best pub in Addlestone by a long way. Always a good friendly buzz in the bar which makes for a very relaxing time. Not tried the food, but there are always 2 unusual guest beers - Heaviestoun Bitter & Twisted, plus Moorhouses Black Cat on my last visit - both excellent!! Well worth a detour!!

30 Aug 2010 18:56

The Red Lion, Shamley Green

I agree with the last comment - the 49'er was average - I didn't fancy a second, but it was served in a correctly branded glass, which is essential in my book!! Plenty of seating out on the grass at the front, overlooking the cricket pitch. The road is quite busy though, so not that tranquil.

30 Aug 2010 18:48

The Falkland Arms, Great Tew

A long, long time since my last visit!! Not changed much, still a classic country pub with roaring log fire, good local ales and hearty, well presented food. Was very busy Sunday lunchtime, but still remained an enjoyable visited.

6 Dec 2009 19:58

The Turf Tavern, Oxford

A must if you visit Oxford. Little changed from when I was last here 25 years ago!! Very small inside but plenty of seating outside. Good range of ales.

6 Dec 2009 19:53

The Head of the River, Oxford

Yes - the drinks were expensive and not that great. But the staff were friendly and smiled a lot, and it had a nice relaxed atmoshere.

6 Dec 2009 19:47

The Grapes, Oxford

Was very busy when I visited on Friday evening. Friendly bar staff and a great range of guest beers. Well worth a visit!

6 Dec 2009 19:44

The Old Tom, Oxford

Called in twice while in Oxford this weekend. Pub was packed Friday evening, so moved on after a good pint of Hyde's. Returned the next night and it was much quieter. Great "real" Thai food, spicy and very good value for money!!

6 Dec 2009 19:40

The New Inn, Send

Stopped by the busy canalside garden yesterday evening, always a pleasant place for a beer. Good range of ales, and always an interesting guest ale, this time Cottage Hot Dog (very good!). Worth a visit.

9 Aug 2009 10:17

The Porterhouse, Covent Garden

Having been to Covent Garden regularly, 4 or 5 times a year, I was amazed that I'd never stumbled across this place!! Fantastic interior on many levels, friendly staff and a mind boogling selection of beers from around the world!!
Didn't eat there this time, interesting food menu, but will make it my first port of call when I'm next in London!!

9 Aug 2009 10:13

The Cricketers, Duncton

After searching for somewhere to eat and drink, having spent the day on the coast, we stopped by because the pub looked so attractive. What a good decision!!! Friendly staff and very welcoming. I had the Haddock and chips - which at 11 needed to be pretty special - and it was!! And my wife had Duck Confit which again was excellent.

Great selection of ales - I had Dark Star Best, Horsham Bitter, and Arundel Gold, all were absolutely perfect!!

Will make The Cricketers my first choice when in the area - just wish it was closer to home - may have to consider moving!!

9 Aug 2009 10:07

The Old Goat, Fulwell

I agree with last comment as I too was in here Sunday lunchtime. Despite the fact that Sundays is "Family Day" (great idea!) and the pub was chocka with pushchairs, buggies, babies and lactating mums, it made for a warm, homely atmosphere. Great, inventive, tasty and well presented food along with unusual Belgium beers (many on draught) makes this pub a cut above the rest. Even as the place was really busy, our food arrived in 20 minutes. Excellent! Next time we visit we shall travel there by train, and then we can both experience the wonderful beers!

5 Jan 2009 09:23

The Bishop On The Bridge, Winchester

What a great pub! Packed Sunday lunchtime, great atmosphere, real fire, staff that know what there doing and superb ale served in the correct glasses! It floats my boat!

8 Dec 2008 20:33

Royal Oak, Winchester

Spaceous bar area, but maybe with to many slut machines. Decent pint of Taylor's Ram Tam though.

8 Dec 2008 20:29

Old Plough, Stoke D'Abernon

Good traditional pub with large rear garden and also plenty of seating out the front. Not eaten here so can't comment on the food, but the ales are always from fairly local micros and well kept. Worth a look if in the area.

29 Jul 2008 20:09

The Barley Mow, West Horsley

Fairly standard village pub with tables out the front. Sports the old Ind Coope signs advertising Burton Ale as you go in. A couple of ales available (Pride, GK IPA & Spitfire).

29 Jul 2008 20:04

The Rake, London Bridge

Tiny little bar with about the same size outside drinking area to the side. This area is no-smoking when the sun shades are up which is good. Unbelievable selection of bottled beers, 2 ales on tap (Westerham & Twickenham) plus 4 interesting foreign beers. I like it when you drink beer from the correct glass which is the norm here. Helpful and cheerful girl behind the bar is something you don't often come across in these parts! My first choice now when in the area.

27 Jul 2008 09:58

The Coal Hole, Strand

Very busy and noisy with the pre-theatre crowd. The pint of Snaithes Summer Sunshine was very good. Have eaten here a number of times and found the food always good. I think the Nicholsons chain does a good job in providing good pub grub and drinks in characterful surroundings. How many of these pubs would have disappeared or been refurbished and lost forever?

27 Jul 2008 09:49

The Blackfriar, Blackfriars

It is a strange interior, almost crypt-like with carvings of monks and brass plaques depicting scenes.Interest history. Large seating area to the front which can be a bit noisy with traffic. Good ales available with Summer ales being promoted. I tried Bateman's Thirsty Work which was excellent.

27 Jul 2008 09:42

The Minnow, Weybridge

Very busy on a sunny Monday evening in the garden. Interesting selection of foreign bottled beers as well as draught beers. Good quality food but at Weybridge prices, as you would expect for such a nice location.

21 Jul 2008 20:50

The Crown Hotel, Chertsey

Enjoyed a couple of pints in the garden at the rear, which has waitress service. Good selection of imported lagers on draught. Most enjoyable and would seek out again next time I'm in Chertsey

16 Jul 2008 12:43

The Olde Swan Hotel, Chertsey

From the outside this pub looks promising, but you're soon disappointed by the stark bright interior, hard uncomfortable seating, and bland beer. Maybe they're trying to compete with the Prince Regent around the corner which is equally dire.

16 Jul 2008 12:38

The Queens Arms, Addlestone

Started using this pub more regularly when they decided to stock the local Waylands Brewery beer. Addled Ale and sometimes Blonde Belle on offer and always served in tip-top condition. Gets busy for live sports, but is always friendly and the Landlord makes you feel very welcome. A great little pub!

14 Jul 2008 22:01

Waggon and Horses, Addlestone

Pleasant back street pub, with a bright, airy feel. Had a refurb last year, just before the smoking ban came in. Got an idea it might be under new management. Used to be an Ushers tied house but now serves the likes of Pride and Pedigree. Worth a try.

14 Jul 2008 21:54

The Running Horses, Mickleham

Had a couple of pints of Spitfire (which was excellent!) sitting out the front with a view of the lovely church, idealic! Was busy for a not very warm summer's evening. Can't comment on the food as I didn't see anybody eating, but there was a good range of beers and pleasant, friendly service. Will pop in again when in the area.

14 Jul 2008 08:37

The Red Lion, Thorpe

Great village pub that caters for all. Plush separate dining area with extensive and imaginative menu, large garden and main bar. Usually 3 ales, Adnams Broadside was good. Varied Live music on Saturdays and sometimes at Sunday lunchtime to. Only negative - ladies loos are in dire need of a makeover.

6 Jul 2008 10:47

The William IV, Albury

Stopped for Sunday lunch. Had lovely fresh cod and wife had roast beef. Couple of pints of Surrey Hills Ranmore Ale and Shere Drop, what more do you want? Sunshine maybe, was a bit nippy in the garden. Agree that it's a wee bit expensive but found that the staff and locals didn't bite!

15 Jun 2008 18:57

Bishop Out Of Residence, Kingston Upon Thames

Food dominated riverside pub. Great choice of quality food at very reasonable prices. Loads of specials on the blackboard, table service by friendly staff and a good range of beers (2 guests, Directors and Deuchars IPA). Enjoyable experience

26 May 2008 17:38

The Roast Ox, Painscastle

Lovely pub in lovely village with friendly locals. Good selection of ales and Thatcher cider from the barrel!
Try the chilli; it's to die for, and the pies aren't bad either!

18 May 2008 09:46

The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton

It must be 30 years since I last visited this pub, when it was a Gales outpost and the landlord had a large poodle, which I seem to remember nearly knocking me over! As then, its still a real pub serving well-kept ales and tasty homemade food. Was pretty crowded lunchtime on a cold, wet Bank Holiday. Well worth seeking out if you fancy getting away from the seafront area. Poodles gone, thank God!

The Anglers Retreat, Staines

Been past this pub lots of times and it has always looks interesting. Visited this week to eat and was very impressed, burgers excellent and good value. Good range of ales (Brakspears Bitter, Gold and Wychwood Hobgoblin) plus a real log fire. Will be back for more!!

De Hems, Soho

A great antidote to the brightly coloured ducks etc, hanging in the chinese restaurant windows of nearby Gerrard Street. Friendly atmosphere, great range of Dutch and Belgium beers, and good authentic Dutch food. Worth seeking out.

The Cricketers, Brighton

Characterful interior with lots of different drinking areas. Have only visited once, seemed ok and the pint of Harveys good.

Doggetts Coat and Badge, Southwark

Your best bet for a decent pint when on the Southbank. Always an interesting selection of ales plus Leffe, Fruli and Hoegarrden. Good value food and nice views of the Thames. The only downside is the piped music and the squeeky main door. Somebody get some WD40 on it before it drive everyone mental.

The Coal Hole, Strand

Really like this place. Have visited a few times when in the area and not been disappointed. Good selection of ales and good value food. Very relaxed atmosphere for a central London pub.

The Thames Bar (Ship Hotel), Shepperton

Made the mistake of returning to this venue for our company Christmas party after having a great time two years before. Obviously under new management as all aspects of the evening were diabolical. Food was like school dinners (packet frozen veg) and wine undrinkable. DJ setting up as we ate. Won't visit again.

The Good Intent, Puttenham

Had lunch here midweek. Steak & ale pudding excellent and very filling. Good selection of food and ales. Even on a wet Wednesday there was a healthy buzz of conversation from the locals. Have popped in a number of times before and always been impressed. Great pub!

The George, Staines

Went in for a couple of beers on Sunday lunchtime. Very busy with the beer festival but only 2 people serving, both Eastern Europeans. They sseemed to be getting a few orders wrong, with people bringing drinks back. Beer was good especially the Anker Blonde from Belgium and Jennings Sneck Lifter. Always cheap but good quality.

The Castle Inn, Ottershaw

Welcoming, friendly local with a good choice of ales (usually 6)normally busy on Saturday evenings with diners. Good choice of dishes on the menu plus 3 specials. A bit on the pricey side but good quality.

The Volunteer, Sutton Abinger

A great place to catch the last rays of Autunm sun, sitting on the benches at the front of the pub nursing at pint of Fursty Ferret.

The Three Horseshoes, Laleham

Good location with plenty of parking. First visit for many years. Pleasant, trendy decor and helpful staff. Varied menu with good specials board. Lunch-time so wasn't drinking and didn't notice the beer range. Unusual mirror in the conservatory! Will be back for more.

The Kings Head, Chertsey

Good to see live music on the menu, but the pub itself is in dire need of a makeover. Gambling machines aplenty and average beer (Courage Best and Abbot).

Ship Inn, Langstone

Eat there on a busy Sunday Lunchtime. Food and service was excellent, large portions too. Nice pint of Discovery. Great entertainment watching the antics of drivers using the busy car park.
