The Sun, Clapham

I have to echo the last few comments. I was in there last night, a not overly-busy Thursday. It took ages and ages to get served. We weren't even two or three deep at the bar. They were just painfully slow... Lots of empty glasses around too.

The Stonhouse, Clapham

The reviews below all seem to be extremely critical of the food, which doesn't sound great as it's supposed to be a gastropub, but as I've never eaten here I can't really comment on that. However, it is a good place to go for a quiet drink if you want to chat with someone but don't want to have to shout in to their ear. The bar staff are a bit slow but it's generally possible to get a seat, even on a Friday and Saturday.

The beer garden, small as it is, is excellent and well worth the visit on a sunny evening.

The Calf, Clapham

This is one of the best pubs in Clapham in my opinion: individual and friendly. I'm not sure why it hasn't got better reviews or a higher rating. There's an excellent range of beers, the wine list is half decent and the food is above average pub grub. It's big too so it's not very difficult to find a seat.

The only downside as far as I'm concerned is the complete lack of anywhere outside for smokers or anyone hoping to enjoy a bit of sun. Still, I don't smoke and this is rainy England so it's not a major problem most of the year.

The Phoenix, Victoria

One of the very very few pubs in Westminster/Victoria which rises above mediocrity. It gets extremely busy here after work but understandably so. The staff are good and it is easy to get served. The interior is really nice - all modern twists and wood - but is still comfortable and relaxing. I tried the bar snacks here (sort of a tapas-type system of three dishes for 12) and they were excellent, very well-presented and tasty. Well worth the visit. The only downside is the number of people!

Circle Bar, Clapham North

I was a bit sceptical about the two reviews below from turbotaff and googles (one-time posters who are full of praise about how the bar has changed), but actually, they're right. The bar staff are friendly and it's looks great. They even dished out free shots towards the end of the evening. I'll definately be back.

The Bell, East Molesey

I was in here on Christmas Eve, when it was absolutely rammed, and I have to say I thought the bar staff were excellent. They served people at the bar quickly, in the order they arrived at it and with a smile on their faces. Even the empties were collected regularly. I still kind of wish that they redecorated the place, got rid of the fruit machines and made it in to a proper, dark, old-worldy pub, but the staff are grand.

ps. please bring back the Old Peculiar...

The Two Chairmen, St James's

I like this pub. I wouldn't go there for food, it's not that sort of place, but if you want to sit in a quiet, dark corner and have a good chat with someone it's great. The ales I've had in here have been fine and the service has always been good. Judging by the comments below either I've been lucky or they've been unlucky! Anyway, I wouldn't hesitate to pop in for a pint, particularly on a cold, rainy evening when it is the perfect homely shelter.

The Cavendish Arms, Stockwell

Fair enough Shirley Jane! I'll try popping along later one evening... maybe try a bit of jazz on a Sunday.

The Whitehorse, Brixton

I think the White Horse is consistently very good, whether it's for a lunchtime meal or for an evening of drinking and dancing. Food is good quality and the staff are friendly and efficient. It's been done up recently, but to me it still looks the same as it did before - a typical Brixton pub/bar - wooden tables, mismatched chairs, exposed brick work etc. The toilets were fine when I went there (judging by the comments below that hasn't always been the case). It's well worth visiting on a night out.

The Cavendish Arms, Stockwell

Is this place actually open? I went to have a look a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't find any way of getting in. Whoever owns this place needs to unlock the gates and doors!

The Falcon, Clapham Junction

I was pleasently surprised by this place. It's too close to the station not to feel like it is full of people meeting briefly before heading elsewhere. However, the beer I had (Spitfire) was good, the staff were friendly and we got served quickly. The decor inside is interesting too - late Victorian. If this pub was a few streets from the station it would probably be a bit of a destination. The cheap food is poor, sub-wetherspoons standard, stuff though.

Artesian Well, Wandsworth

I really liked this place, it had a very good atmosphere. A place where you can dance, meet new people and drink with feeling like if you accidentally bump into the wrong person it's all going to kick off. A sort of student bar for people nearer the age of 30, if you will. There's a dance floor upstairs. Crazy decor downstairs (the weird statue on the outside is a taste of what is inside).

The Railway, Clapham North

I spend fifteen minutes waiting to be served on Saturday. I left in the end because it seemed no more likely than when I arrived. This is an okay place during the week, but they need more staff when its busy!

The Race Horse Inn, Westhall

Really nice country pub this and so well worth the visit. The landlady, Beryl, is very friendly and seems to want the pub to be a real community affair - there were mums with their toddlers having coffee and juice when I popped in before lunch. I didn't try the ales, but the locally- and freshly-caught fish and chips (cooked by Beryl's husband) were lush and reasonably priced too.

Have to agree with Hops n Malt about the dog too. I don't usually like dogs in pubs but he added to the atmosphere.

Ashley Park Hotel, Walton on Thames

I'm not sure what the anon on 21 August 2007 is talking about. I've drunk in here many times and never had a problem with change or measures.

There is something a bit soulless about this pub. I don't know what particular, since the staff are cheerful enough. It's possibly because its a bit too light and airy; somewhere to go for a coffee or a sandwich as much as a drink. I like it but couldn't love it.

The Brixton Bar and Grill, Brixton

This place really isn't as bad as some of the reviews below suggest. It is a little bit expensive I agree, but that's probably because it's a table service. It's somewhere to go for a few drinks on one of those nights when a pub seems too dull but a club seems like too much. The food is good too.

The Grasshopper Inn, Moorhouse

I ate in the restaurant recently and it was without doubt one of the worst meals I've ever had out. The waiting staff were pleasant and did their best, but whoever runs the kitchen needs to learn how to source decent produce and then how to cook it. The steak and chips I had (for 13 pounds) could've been from a Wetherspoons. In fact, it probably would've been nicer in a Wetherspoons. The Old Peculiar I had was fine though, so the bar is obviously well-looked after.

De Hems, Soho

Went to the upstairs bar here on a weekday evening. It was busy, as people below have said, but not overly so. The Kriek beer on tap was very nice and there was a big range of bottled beers too. This kind of pub is all of rare in central London as it is somewhere you can happily go for a pint and a chat in nice surroundings, as opposed to a grotty hole or a chain pub.

The Falcon, Clapham North

I went here on a fairly busy Saturday night (all the tables inside were taken, half the ones at the front and lots of people were standing). Contrary to the comments below I didn't find the service slow at all and the bar staff seemed pretty cheerful. Like a lot of pubs it smells a bit inside though, because the smoking ban... surely the owners can think of a way of masking this a bit? Cleaning fluid, sweat and stale ale just isn't that appealing!

The Far Side, Brixton

Went there last night and it's not really much to write home about. The bar staff started tidying everything away at about ten - we ended up sitting at the bar surrounded by tables with the chairs on top of them. We left around eleven, maybe even slightly before, I nipped to the toilet and by the time I got back they'd put my bar stool on the bar and were waiting to lock up. Not very friendly.

The Priory Arms, Stockwell

I've been here a couple of times for Sunday lunch in the last few weeks and it was very nice both times. Its properly cooked food and is pretty cheap at around 8 a meal. My veggie friend tells me her roast was good too. There's a good range of drinks - several real ales and unusual bottled lagers as well odd things like parsnip wine (which I haven't tried). Its a good pub for a boozy afternoon or a few pints in the evening.
