Spotted Cow, Poole

This has got to be the best pub on Poole Quay, when compared to some of its other overpriced, ostentatious neighbours. The 5 or so real ales are normally served in excellent condition at an affordable price, especially when compared to the exorbitantly priced vinegar normally served up in the nearby Lord Nelson.

The quality of the exorbitantly overpriced real ales in this pub continue to plumb even lower depths. How can a pub consistently serve up beer in such a poor condition, year in, year out? The nearby Portsmouth Hoy is served by the same brewery, Hall and Woodhouse, but the landlord there manages to keep the beer in tip-top condition.

Thought I try this place the other night to see if it really is as bad as people say. It isn't. It's a damn sight worse! Probably the biggest shithole I've ever been to in my life.

The King Charles Inn, Poole

Usually near-empty pub just off Poole Quay. This is one those pubs that's had numerous management changes in the last few years without anyone making a success of the place. Seems to be a gay bar now, so if you're not of that persuasion, try the Antelope, just around the corner. Unlike the Charley, it's open 7 days a week.

The Blue Boar, Poole

Great real ales to be had here, but fiendishly high prices are reflected by the normally near-empty state of the pub. Surely it would be better to lower the prices and fill the pub?

Brewmason, Blackgander and Anna! They're all the same person!

Seems quite significant to me that most of the old regulars of the Nelson, together with off-duty staff, all now drink at the Spotted Cow-they've obviously got taste!

Have used this placed on an ad hoc basis since the late 70s, and I have to say it's now a shadow of its former self. It used to be the best pick-up joint in Poole, but I fear the only thing you'd pick up in this filthy hole now is a dose of crabs that some of the unwashed clientele have left in the disgusting toilets! I have fond memories of the Jim Kellaway years, when the pub was run as a tight ship and the present clientele would not have even got past the front door. Must agree with Sunbeam about the staff. They wouldn't look out of place in an audition for the Adams family!
