The Rose and Crown, Tunbridge Wells

Re-opened under new management

The Lamplighter, St Helier

This is a must visit pub when in Jersey. I have been coming here at least once a year for over 20 years and have seen changes of landlords, customers and décor over that time. What has been consistent is the beer range and quality; it is usually the best on the Island. The current Landlord who has been there for about 10 years is friendly and welcoming and keeps up high standards. The staff are usually good and once they get into the swing of the job able to cope with the customer's banter with ease.

The Old Fountain, Old Street

I have been working in the Old Street area for a year now and visitied this pub on different times and days. Never have had a bad pint and had some of the best ever. The food offering looks reasonable being well sourced but not over fussed gastro style. Always worth a stop for one but it will keep you there for the next

The Shakespeare Tavern, Durham

A lovely pub with its seprate areas. do not be put off if the front bar is busy, push through and there are several rooms to the back and you will often find a seat. The beer was a let down though, the range was uninspired and temperature it was served at was better suited to an Aussie lager than a British ale

Ye Old Elm Tree, Durham

As with most Durham pus this was a long uphill climb to get to, making us all the more gratefull for the fine well kept beer that was on offer. The pub has an interesting entrance with it narrow bar that opens out to one side making it larger that it first appears. We visited on an early lunch time, a student was writing up notes and firing questions to the pub in general and receiving some very erudite answers. A pub very much worth re-visiting

Head of Steam, Durham

Visited this pub of a lunchtime taking heed of the reviews bout how it is in the evening. This side of Durham does have an odd feel about it but we found the beer very good and appreciated the opportunity to sample some continental beers. We ate here and the food was very good. A great lunch stop that is away from the tourist traps

The Victoria Hotel, Durham

This was the best pub in Durham we stayed in the city for three nights and ended up here every night. The beer was very well kept and the atmosphere was great. It is an interesting pub with three rooms all different, we spent most of our time in the public bar enjoying banter with the locals all friendly. next time am in Durham will try to stay in its B&B

Dun Cow, Durham

Wandered in early of a Sunday evening, loved the sliding door entrance. The rear bar was heaving with a very jolly party. The bar we were in was cosy with friendly locals. The beer range was not inspiring, but guided by said loacals had an acceptable pint of Castle Eden which was very reasonably priced.

The Grove Tavern, Tunbridge Wells

The pub is going from strength to strength, a few years ago it struggled to keep one hand pump operating. Now in the last month a fourth pump has been added, so in addition to the regulars there will be 2 guests.

The Ragged Trousers, Tunbridge Wells

A very busy pub so it must be doing something right. The good bits, the beer was of good quality, the temporary bar-b-que was reasonably priced not the cheapest meat used. The bad bits, plastic glasses, constant short measures, every time a beer was ordered a request had to be made to get a pint. When the pints were transferred into real glasses the measure was clearly short (Strangely though those drinking halfs got full measure after asking for top ups). The harassed bar staff try to overcharge and are reluctant to top up. Those who shout get served first, witnessed several instances of loud mouths get served before the more patient customers. In summary a good pub with good beer but could do better.

The Rose and Crown, Halstead

On learning of Bobs forced departure visited yesterday, to show support. This pub has been in the Good Beer Guide for 15 consecutive years, and has won West Kent CAMRA pub of the Year competition twice. There was a selection of 6 real ales including a hard to find mild, hardly an unimaginative selection. It was hard to find a seat as the pub was full of drinkers and diners. One wonders what the new owner thinks is going wrong? To treat a Manager who has a successful track record so shabbily by throwing him out very little notice of not only his livelihood but has home says a lot about the person doing this and none of it good.

The Compasses, Tunbridge Wells

Are they trying to kill the pub?
They close the pub on one the busiest weeks of the year, Cricket Week, for a refurb that did not a lot. On the Friday of the snow it closed at 9pm. On Christmas Eve it closed at 10pm because the staff were tired. All this will have done wonders for their annual turnover.

The Abbotsford, Edinburgh

Good Pub, good beers but vicious and vindictive Bouncers.
Do not use your mobile within earshot of them. If they do not like your conversation they bar you without any right of appeal. The 5 others in our party all left because I was not allowed back in. I voiced my opinion of them to another person on the phone. The first time I have ever been barred from a pub. I am sorry to say I will not be visiting the pub again.

The Wheatsheaf Inn, Marsh Green

A welcome return to a pub that is always a winner. Great range of beers and good food. Congratulations on receiving the 15 continous years in the Good Beer Guide certificate. it is one of the few pubs that I make sure I will have a real cider.

The Old Eden, Edenbridge

Enjoyed a recent visit to this pub, my first in many years. The Landlord was very affable and makes a good host. The range of beers was excellent and every one we tried was in great condition, we even stayed longer than intended. Will not leave it so long before visiting again.

The King and Queen, Edenbridge

4 of us visited the pub on a Sunday afternoon. I was please to see how it had been renovated (I have not visited the pub in nearly 20 years) and liked the atmosphere. That is the good bit, the bad was the condition of the beer. All of us rejected the first beer selected Sheps St Georges day guest. The barmaid cheerfully changed the beers for others but they were no better and we left leaving most of our beers undrunk not wishing to create problems for the duty staff by rejecting yet more of the beer. It is such a shame that a basic as serving drinkable ale is so sadly lacking when so much appeared to be right

Toad Rock Retreat, Rusthall

Pub currently closed, maybe opening with new management soon

The Royal Oak, Borough

Been in twice in recent weeks. It is like a friendly country pub but in London. The food was good and honest not gastro or ping. I just wished I worked for the company that sent in a staff member for two four pint jugs for their Friday afternoon meeting

Brecknock Arms, Bells Yew Green

Much improved pub since the new landlord and lady have been in place. The refurbishment has worked a treat without destroying its character. Good to see the full range of Harvey's beer available and always in great condition. Good for eating too.
