Amble Inn, Harpenden

Under new ownership (again). Seem friendly - certainly a very active Facebook page! Beer and general ambience good. Unfortunately the pretty rubbish-for-veggies menu has carried over to new owners so we'll drink there but not eat.

The Crooked Billet, Colney Heath

Went last week in that last big of Glorious October (?) weather. The garden outside and quite a good playground made it a good spot for a family lunch. Quiche salads were good, and the cheese baguettes were very generous. Side Pocket went down well. Overall will be very happy to come again. Only negative - some people who arrived after us were told that because a party of ten were booked in 30 minutes they couldn't order anything until they knew what the party wanted and therefore what was left over. So .. great news if you want to book for a party of ten, but quite surprising really, and would put me off getting there late in the day.

Silver Cup, Harpenden

Blimey, what's happened?

Have been in a few times in recent years and would normally be my spot for taking someone out for a pub lunch. Got there today and something must have happened in the bar area because there's a big machine with a fan (?dehumidifier?) which was quite noisy. The bar area is looking quite tired now, after the excellent refurb of a few years ago.

There's a good set of veggie choices on the menu but with the exception of a pasta dish they were all off. We drunk up and went somewhere much better (though the BITE ratings wouldn't tell you this).

The Inn on the Green, Harpenden

Friday lunchtime, last rays of summer. Very friendly staff. Not too busy but not empty either. Did the "two meals for 8.95" thing and they were at the top end of pub food and superb value at that price.

Excellent range of vegetarian choices on the menu.

Hadn't been in here for a while, and trying to remember why not, then remembered that the "non-smoking room" was rubbish, back in the day. It's certainly back on our list as regular now.

The Cove, Covent Garden

Nice beer. Great location. Small but just got seats at 5pm on Monday. Big negative was ridiculously loud music. We had to go elsewhere to hear ourselves talk, even before getting to try a pasty! Without the music would score a 7, but frankly unusable as a place to meet people. Shame.
