The Royal Oak, Rusper

I invited some real ale enthusiasts to join me at the Royal Oak last week. Their individual reviews came with the look of utter heaven on their faces when working through the large choice of exceptional ales! The Royal Oak is without doubt a rare example of a real old traditional public house and a treasure to behold for ale drinkers! The roaring log fire and great banter were included for free as were the coffees for our nominated driver. A most excellent evening.

The Plough Inn, Ifield

It's easy to forget that this pub is in Crawley. Way out on the edge of town approaching the countryside and set by the 13th C. Ifield Church. A fair sized pub with sun terrace out front. Hall & Wodehouse Beers which are well kept. A decent pub and usually fairly busy.

The BreweryShades, Crawley

This pub has had it ups and downs. I believe it very much on an up at the moment. True, it's in Crawley which isn't good but it is good amongst what this own has to offer. They have a decent selection of real ales with regulars from the Dark Star brewery. The staff are friendly and the food is reasonably priced. If you are looking for real ales in Crawley it's here or the Swan.

The Swan, West Green

Good and varying selection of real ales. Don't mistake the regulars as 'clickly' they like to be engaged and are enthusiastic about the beer. There is a pool table and juke box along with a large beer garden. The beer festivals are truly impressive. There is a small, quiet bar to one side if you just want a quiet drink. This is now the best real ale pub in Crawley.

The Royal Oak, Rusper

A real ale drinkers pub with some great cider offerings too. I have spent some wonderful summer evenings in the beer garden (which is a sort of patio area with some benches out the front of the pub) enjoying excellent beer, eyes closed and listening to bird song! The Royal Oak is on the small side and sometimes gets busy ( a dozen or more people would constitue busy here) and then the service can be a little slow as one should expect. That said, who actually minds waiting for a great pint? Not I!

The Surrey Oaks, Newdigate

I'm often in here and I have never been disapointed with the beer! Unlike a lot of pubs there's regular guest ales and whilst some may not be to everyones taste at least the landlord keeps the ale offerings interesting. Well kept beer and friendly staff - that's a pub.

The Jubilee Oak, Crawley

This JDW pub has no interest in the real ale side of its business. Almost always there is only ONE guest ale on while the other pumps are decorated with those infuriating signs that say 'coming soon', which means, it's gone - run out and we don't care. The staff (most of them, not all) don't give a stuff about ale related complaints or comments - that is if you can find a bar person. This pub is not a patch on the JDW Lynd Cross in Horsham. The Jubilee Oak is a lager drinkers pub and cheap spirits 'warm up pub' for people who heading off to enjoy their evening elsewhere.

The Star Inn, Rusper

This pub can get busy at weekends. Good food and a varied menu with some greek specials on (the landlord is Greek and a real diamond). Staff are friendly. There is a fairly large dining area and reasonably priced menu (considering it's a countryside pub.) A smallish sized sun terrace garden to the rear. As a beer drinker this pub is second to none for it's Fullers London Pride, kept to perfection. A great pub for a quiet drink in the week but does get busier as the weekends approach. The Sunday roast, (food after 6pm) is great.

The Plough & Attic Rooms, Rusper

This is a friendly pub that went up market a few years back. The menu is always interesting and prices are what you'd expect from a gastro pub, nothing frightening. Big rear garden and small front terrace that faces the church, always reminds me of being in a french village. Inside a cosy fireplace is lit in the colder months. A must mention is the stylish toilets. Very pleasant staff. Ok, onto the serious stuff - the two main ales on regular sale - Fullers London Pride and Sharpes Doombar. Both Ales are served to perfection and that is a rare thing these days! Current prices are about 3.50 a pint which is painful to everyones pockets but about average now in country pubs. The big plus is at least you are getting an outstanding pint of beer for your money. There's Aspals Cider and some lagers on for the non-ale drinkers out there. All in all a great place for a quiet pint or to meet up with friends and have a quality meal.

The Star Inn, Rusper

We use this pub every Sunday after going to the Rusper Sussex Car Boot Sale. The atmosphere is relaxed and there are no large TV screens or Juke Boxes! There is usually 4 good real ales including a regular well kept London Pride. The food is always excellent and the Sunday lunches are good value. The pub dates back to the 15th Century and the low ceilings and beams give the authentic touch of a genuine village pub. Well worth a visit!
