Euston Tap, Euston

I used to go to the Tap a lot and always recommended it to acquaintances. As well as spending many evenings in there, I often used to stop for a quick pint of something interesting before getting my train. I was a real shock then, when a couple of weeks ago I was treated with such aggressiveness and incivility by one of the bar staff.

I had had a good look at the beer board and having made my choice, saw a gap at the bar. The youngish bloke with a big hipster beard and a baseball cap was standing there so I began to ask him for a pint of whatever it was that I had chosen. He stared at me and cut me off dead with a growled, "serving someone else" and continued standing there staring at me with ill-concealed hostility, saying nothing further, stock still. I don't know where his one lucky customer was at the time, but it wasn't at the bar. This pillock shouldn't be in the hospitality industry. I walked out, furious at having my good mood ruined by someone with no manners whatsoever, and haven't been back since. Shame. It used to be a really friendly place. Not going back there.

The Duke's Head, Highgate

I was walking past and happened to notice it had obviously changed hands and had a refurb, so went in to take a look, and have a pint. The range of interesting cask and keg beers was very impressive - not a generic tasteless lager in sight. If this is a Euston Tap influence, it's a very welcome one. I had a delicious and very fresh-tasting pale ale - can't remember it's name. The decoration is restrained and tasteful, and the only slight irritation was some totally unnecessary and unwelcome music (why?). Anyway, I don't want to end on a negative - it felt like it has the potential to be a really great pub, and I will definitely be back!

The Queens Head, St Pancras

This place has changed hands since the 2009 reviews on here. I was introduced to it by a friend who works locally and have visited again since. Genuinely friendly, efficient service and three good beers/ales as well as the usual lagers. The Adnams Winter Spiced beer was excellent and even better at only 2.50 a pint. They also had mulled wine and mulled cider available. My only minor quibble was that the piano player was a bit on the loud side, but it was enjoyable really and at least they didn't have some dreadful CD playing too loudly. Not a TV in sight, either, which is perfect. Lovely roaring fireplace, warm welcome. They clearly care about this place and its customers and deserve lots of support. This pub is a pleasure to be in, and - not being a tacky chain place or a self-consciously "hip" bar - that is a real rarity for this area.

The Queens Head, Hammersmith

I'm astonished that some people have experienced ill-manners and bad service from the staff. I live nearby and am a regular visitor, and the staff have only ever been charm and efficiency personified. It's a great pub and the food is very good if you stick to the basics (pies and roasts etc.). It's normally just the right side of busy as well...i.e. lively but normally easy to get a table if you want one. It's the best pub in the area by miles!

The Mug House, London Bridge

I was looking forward to going here this evening to have a drink with a few friends for my birthday. I thought I better just check that it would be OK to turn up with ten people or so, so I gave them a call.

Unfortunately, the man who answered the phone was totally unhelpful and, to make matters worse, horrendously arrogant. I was actually quite staggered by his rudeness. Needless to say, I'll be elsewhere this evening.
