The Gate Hangs High, Hook Norton

Only one real ale available on the bar, Hooky Bitter, so I ordered a pint of that. I took it to my table to wait for my meal to arrive. The beer was hazy (to say the least) and it tasted 'tinny'. When my starter arrived I pointed out to the waitress that the beer wasn't very good and she asked if I wanted something else so I asked for a glass of wine. The wine never arrived and the beer, which remained on our table for the duration, appeared on the bill!

Bread to accompany my soup arrived as I was just finishing it and the service was 'slack'.

I was very dissapointed with the beer, both offer and quality, and the service was almost as bad!

Nice beer but far too cold! Is there any truth in the rumour the lease is being sold?

The White Lion, Fewcott

Beer is top class. I travel miles to get here and I'm never dissapointed! Shame about 'Eddie's' language!

The White Lion, Steeple Aston

Had a nice pint of beer (Timothy Taylors Landlord) which was wonderful following a dissapointing visit to the Rock of Gibralter! Roaring log fire helped with the warm welcome we were given on our arrival!

Wallingford Arms, Didcot

This is a bad pub! The drunks that find there way in will make your visit 'memorable'. It really doesn't have anything to offer in the way of nutritional food (chips with everything and not a tomato or fresh vegetable in sight) and the beer is awful. I will avoid this pub like the plague!

The Three Pigeons Inn, Banbury

Its a village pub in the town. Friendly customers but no cask ale available when I was there!

The Swan, Banbury

Had a pint of Deuchars IPA in here the other day. Not bad considering they didn't used to serve proper beer, but just a bit too cold. Give it a try and let them know that real ale is the way forward!

The Red Lion, Adderbury

This is a main road hotel catering for passing trade and its residence. Very few locals use it because of its dreadful beer and expensive wine and food. Service is slowly provided by the mainly East European staff. The man referred to with the tie fettish is the manager, who also runs a sister hotel in Banbury (and often others at the same time) which means he can't always be around to keep his eye on standards, which are very low. A shame because it's a lovely looking pub from the outside! Greene King too!! Yuck!

The Plough Inn, Adderbury

Not a drinking pub so beer is mediocre. Landlord prefers diners (It was the only pub in the village to close during the afternoon on the day of the Adderbury Beer Festival!?!).It relies on trade from the nearby caravan park although many prefer to go into the centre of the village to the Bell because of its award winning cask ale and food.

The Peyton Arms, Stoke Lyne

Definetly one to seek out! Mick the Hat is a rare character and as long as you understand that this is his front room you're entering you'll receive a warm welcome! His beer is very good, given that it isn't kept in a refridgerated cellar, but it can be subject to some seasonal variation during the extremes of the seasons (What seasons?!!!). A real character in a pub full of character. "Nutty" Norman (Landlord in the '80's) can rest in his grave knowing Stoke Lyne pub is in good hands!

The Pear Tree Inn, Hook Norton

Brewert Tap ... Yes! The beer is not as it should be, cloudy and on sale far past it's best. In my humble opinion he would do well to have fewer beers kept in top condition than what he does at present. Poor standards of clenliness with the landlords dog in and out of the cellar. Try the beer at the visitor centre, you'll see far more Hook Norton personnel enjoying the beer here and not because it's free to them!

The Kings Head, Fritwell

This one is over-hyped! The beer was dissapointing, not clear and on the turn! There seemed to be a CD sale going on at a table near the bar with each disc being sampled annoyingly loud! Very loud conversations for the number of people in there!

The Inn, Greatworth

Watch out for the locals! It's a Hooky pub so the beer offer is quite good. Nothing outstanding but worth making your own mind up about it!

The Great Western Arms, Aynho

Sadly, the worst Hooky beer I've been served in a Hooky pub. I say pub, but when the landlord asks straight away if you're eating and shows you to a table, that's not a pub and I guess that's why the beer was cr*p! Another clue "Half price champagne on Thursdays! Let's hope they find enough money to reopen the Cartwright Arms in the village.

The Gloucester Arms, Oxford

It's just as it was when I was the full-time barman in the mid '70s! It rocks! The beer is good but I didn't see the ghost that I knew to 'live' there all those years ago!

George And Dragon, Chacombe

Beer was awful! Do they know that they shouldn't keep there fruit and veg in the cellar? A good indication that things aren't all they seem! Very keen on marketing themselves but they need something to market first!

The Gate Hangs High, Hook Norton

I'm not sure how this pub servives. It only ever appears busy on Sunday. Beer is OK, well it's Hooky, but the locals language can spoil an otherwise pleasant visit.

The Fox Inn, Souldern

A fine example ..... of how a lovely country pub can be ruined! It's a wine bar! Beer is awful and the locals ..... there aren't any! They've all been outed by the yuppies! This was my local but I chose to travel to Fewcott to the White Lion. Now that's a pub!

12 Dec 2007 11:10

The Fox and Hounds, Ardley

Beer was OK but the White Lion in the village is infinitely better. The food was good but came out of the kitchen worryingly quickly!

The Falkland Arms, Great Tew

Fantastically OVER-RATED! Lovely building. Rear garden is difficult to get to. No carpark. Run by managers for Wadworths (heard they were leaving soon) who are miserable. Sometimes you get a good pint and sometimes you don't. Watch out for the wasps in the summer.

12 Dec 2007 10:54

Exchange, Banbury

This has got to be the worst Wetherspoons pub on the planet! If they've got cask beer it probably isn't in very good nick. Did you know that they sell it so cheap because they buy stock that is about to go out of date? You can tell! Because it opens so early in the morning (9.00ish), it is soon full of .... well you know .... those kind of people!

12 Dec 2007 10:50

The Elephant and Castle, Bloxham

Chas keeps a good pint, although most of his 'young' crowd don't appreciate it. Try it, it's a Hooky pub.

12 Dec 2007 10:46

The Easington, Banbury

Most of the staff try hard, but the beer is down to the guy running it! It's often difficult to get a decent pint of cask ale. They advertise cask ale promotions that don't happen! I only go back because they offer food all day and it's edible!

12 Dec 2007 10:43

The Duke Of Cumberlands Head, Clifton

Beer indifferent. The food is expensive but doesn't need a lot of chewing so just right for the 'older' clientele that use it at lunchtime. Staff have a problem understanding the language and beware, the sign outside says "No Rif-Raf"!!!

12 Dec 2007 10:40

The Crown and Tuns, Deddington

It's a restaurant not a pub. Beer is expensive (like the food) and not so good.

12 Dec 2007 10:36

The Coach and Horses, Adderbury

Average age around 18! Loud music almost drowns out the swearing. Run by the customers not the landlord. Mind the spittle on the floor as you leave. Not for someone looking for good ale!

12 Dec 2007 10:34

The Chandlers Arms, Epwell

It's a Hooky pub so that says it all! Pay it a visit!

12 Dec 2007 10:31

The Bure Farm, Bicester

Beer is sometimes good! I've enjoyed eating here, which says a lot for one so hard to please!

12 Dec 2007 10:25

The Black Boy Inn, Milton

Sudden change of Manager again last week! This pub isn't doing the business! The beer is drinkable, it's their prices that are hard to swallow.

12 Dec 2007 10:22

The Bakers Arms, Bodicote

Over-rated by visitors to this site. More like a working men's club than a pub. Went on to Guinness as cask ale was not available. Most locals go to the Bell in Adderbury!

12 Dec 2007 10:16

The Rock of Gibraltar, Enslow

Visited this pub for the first time, early on Thursday lunchtime. My wife's glass had lipstick on it. My beer had yeast particles swirling around in it. The Greek landlord said that "real ale is like that". He reluctantly changed it for another, which he drew 2 pints off before serving it. I have since heard similar tales of woe. Food was OK. No lights or heating on in the 'consewrvatory' over looking the canal. I shan't rush back!

12 Dec 2007 10:12

The Butchers Arms, Kings Sutton

I've not had a bad pint in this pub since Alan, the new landlord took over. Shame about his hyper son who sometimes 'works' behind the bar!

12 Dec 2007 09:58

The Bell Inn, Adderbury

You won't get a better pint of cask ale or pub food! They've got a Cask Ale Drinkers Club and CAMRA members get 10% off every Monday evening and on the first Saturday of every month. You get 1.00 off a 4 pint jug of cask ale at any time. It's in the GBG and it's got a Beautiful Beer Gold Award. Try it, you won't be dissapointed!
