The William Hancock, Mumbles

Now reopened as The Kinsale, an Irish pub.
The Doom Bar was good.
The owner is actually Irish and a happy, pleasant chap, though he's from Dublin and not Kinsale.

The Antelope, Mumbles

Jan 2014. Still boarded up and covered in "Danger - Keep Out" style notices. The whole place looks like its about to fall over into the road.
I think (and note the use of the word 'think') that whoever owns it may have been given an ultimatum, given the scaffolding around it.

Harbourmaster, Aberaeron

I had a tidy pint of house bitter, brewed by the Purple Moose brewery.

However, a pint and a small glass of wine came to over 7. I expect this in London, but not in rural Wales.
I guess they need to charge those prices to keep the decor up, which is quite bar like and not the most welcoming.

I had the burger with Snowdonia cheddar. It was good, but the burger needs to be made of fattier meat; mine kept falling apart. Also, 11 is extortionate for, what is, a rural Wales pub.

Nice place, but don't park your London price sensibilities!

Cadwagan, Ceredigion

We went there around 8pm last Saturday.

The first thing we had to do was get in through the door. This was being blocked by a fat, drunk lady with a tattooed breast, who was arguing with an equally drunk, thick looking male.

The place is small and was full, except we did get a small table, which was good. However, the place was deafening. Everyone in there was in a higher state of intoxication and as a result, were very loud indeed. One woman opposite kept cackling loudly at anything said to her.

I went to the bar. One of the barmen was far more interested in drinking his pint of lager to serve me. Another chap served me and it was a decent pint, although I cannot remember what it was as I had to stand my ground after another drunk 50something woman tried to push past me to squawk at a drunk on a barstool.

We sat down, barely able to hold a conversation above the shouting and screaming going on. We had that one drink and left.

I'll give it 2 for the quality of the pint I had. The rest of the rating went out of the door, with me, around the corner to the vastly superior Prince Of Wales.

I'd avoid this place, unless listening to squawking harpies and loud drunks is your thing.

The Uplands Tavern, Swansea

I visited this pub for the first time on Saturday.
Now, granted it was in the evening and I'd been on it all day because of the rugby.

It's a big place inside. The beers I had were served in very good time, given how busy it was, by a friendly barmaid and were decent pints.
I shall definitely try this place again, preferably when sober.

I must also comment on the clientelle. They were young, having a good time and I never felt intimidated or annoyed. In fact, I'd like to thank the pretty girl in the lace dress sitting near us. When you bent over, I saw the tops of your tights!

Beaufort Arms, Kittle

A decent pint and an EXCELLENT roast on Sundays.
Who cares about 'tables and furniture' or 'bit like a Doctors waiting room'.
Some of you are too precious.

27 Apr 2011 11:10

The Woodman, Blackpill

More of a food place these days, we were stopped at the door by a friendly girl, asking if we were eating. We weren't.
I had a reasonable couple of pints, before nipping round the corner to The Mumbai for a curry.

I would visit here again.

The White Rose, Mumbles

A dump.
Full of roiders on a Saturday afternoon, going into the toilet cubicles in pairs.
Awful back bar.
Front bar full of eaters, tables covered in salt.
Avoid.

The Pump House, Swansea

Popped in here a few weeks ago, the first time in around 15 years I'd say.

It's been "Brainsed". All shiny and minimalist. I only had one pint and it was ok. Nothing great, but ok.

I'd go back there if I was in the area.

The No Sign Wine Bar, Swansea

Fab place.

Please DO NOT GO HERE. We want to keep it for ourselves!

27 Apr 2011 10:48

Westbourne Hotel, Swansea

A good place to get a decent pint whilst deciding on which of the many curry houses on St Helens rooad to dine in.

The Evening Star, Brighton

Yes, I too always sing the Priest classic when visiting, or even thinking of this fabulous pub.
We thought it might have been features on Sarah Beeny's show "Help My House Is Falling Down", shown on the 7th Sept, but on looking closer at the glimpses, we reckon that's another Brighton pub.

The Evening Star, Brighton

I travelled to a distant shore, I felt I had to go
An inner voice had called me there, but why I did not know
I saw the Evening Star rise up, shining out to sea
And now I understand at last what it means.

Evening star I can see the light.
Evening star guiding me so bright.

I used to tempt fate, I couldn't see straight
I faltered through my younger days
Never knowing where I was going, then something helped me penetrate the haze

Evening star I can see the light
Evening star guiding me so bright

Now I am stronger, the haze no longer
Ruins my future destiny
Such inspirations and new sensations
Pull up these string ties chasing me

Evening star I can see the light
Evening star guiding me so bright

I'm home once more, much better for, the things that I have found
Much wiser now, so simple how, each time I turn around
I see the Evening Star rise up, shining out on me
And now I understand at last what it means
What it all means

Evening star I can see the light
Evening star guiding me so bright

The Bear, Twickenham

Well, the phrase "pleasantly surprised" will do for me too!

I was invited here for a 7:30pm start to celebrate a friends birthday. I'd taken a look at the website and thought "this is just NOT my sort of pub".

However, the bar service was polite and swift. They had real beers on, which amazed me. I had some decent Doom Bar. I noticed they even have some American beers on draught.

In all, I'd go back again early evening.

The Barmy Arms, Twickenham

We popped in here a couple of Saturdays ago.
It was busy, due to the lovely weather, but this is not a place to seek out.
There was a very annoying middle aged drunk, who kept wandering round, trying to sit at peoples tables.
The burgers looked interesting and was being cooked to order outside.
My Deuchars IPA was ok and was served promptly and without fuss.

This place could be so much better. Indeed, there are far better pubs within a few minutes walk. The Barmy Arms really needs to up its game.

Roddy's Bar, South Ealing

This is a very handy little bar for when we change from the 65 to the E3.
We've been here a few times now and apart from one time where a chavvy family looked like kicking off with each other, it's always been fine and friendly, if a little quiet. The last time we popped in on a Saturday night, there was about 6 people here. Still the Irish barman and nice barmaid chatted to us.

14 Jan 2010 13:57

Joiners Arms, Gower

I grew up in the village. The Joiners gets a 10 out of 10 for being a great village local.
The onsite brewed beers are just superb.
My only little gripe is you get far too much chips with your food; they need to knock back on the portion size. However I'm not going to knock any score off!

31 Dec 2009 13:41

The Cove, Covent Garden

This is a brilliant little hideaway. I've not been for a few months now, but I'd say 3.50 is an ok price to pay for a very touristy part of Central London.

The beer and service has always been top notch.

Some people here obviously just like to moan. It's small, it's in Central London, but it's an oasis.

9 Sep 2009 12:23

Navy Inn, Penzance

Had a nice meal of local fish in here.

The Doom Bar was good, but what is on the far left pump? Throughout our time there, the barman spent all his idle time trying to pull something through there. When we left, the pubp still wasn't dispensing.

29 Apr 2009 13:55

Tyacks Hotel, Camborne

I'll give this place a 1 because of Terry the polite barman and his good pint of Tribute.

However, the place is horrible. On my lunchtime visit, it was populated by very loud, heavily tattooed young blokes. They were accompanied by females and babies. All the pushchairs made the place resemble a creche, not a pub.

Camborne must be another Redruth.

29 Apr 2009 13:52

The Turks Head, Penzance

Popped in last Friday on my annual visit to Penzance.
Even a bunch of 8 knucledraggers from Wadebridge couldn't spoil the enjoyment.

I thought the Betty Stogs was better than the Doom Bar.

28 Apr 2009 13:56

The Admiral Benbow, Penzance

Another weekend in Penzance.
Another few visits to the Benbow.
Another great great time.

28 Apr 2009 13:54

The Bulls Head, Chiswick

An excellent pub. Great beer and a nice riverside setting.
I've never bought food here, only alcohol.

22 Apr 2009 14:47

The City Barge, Chiswick

A fun, funky little pub. I enjoy my visits here.

22 Apr 2009 14:46

The Bell and Crown, Chiswick

I really like this pub, especially in the warmer months when you can sit outside by the river.

HOWEVER, on my last visit a few weeks ago, a pint of Discovery and a small glass of Pinot Grigio was a wallet busting 7.20. If I want to get mugged, I'll hang around Brentford. Withprices like these, no wonder people are deserting pubs for supermarket booze at home.

22 Apr 2009 14:45

The Lamb, Surbiton

As a former regular and player for the pub rugby team, I've popped in a few times lately and enjoyed every visit.
It's a different atmosphere to what it used to be, but it's a great little place for a good, well kept real ale and a chat with your mates.

20 Mar 2009 15:07

The Maypole, Surbiton

Now Charlie has taken over, this is going to be the best pub in Surbiton. He's got Doom Bar on. He'll put the rugby on for you. His Sunday lunches are excellent (I went for the full 3 courses and left happy and with a full stomach). His barmaids are not only gorgeous, but very friendly and helpful too - such a great welcome to be smiled at when you arrive at the bar! I must get down there again soon.

12 Dec 2008 11:30

The Eel Pie, Twickenham

This is the best pub in Twickenham. I love it.
I am an infrequent visitor to the place, but the guvnor always remembers me and greets me.

9 Sep 2008 13:38

The Hope, Richmond

Popped in here Sunday lunchtime. They have Sharps Doom Bar on. That'll do for me.

10 Jun 2008 14:17

The Ram, Kingston Upon Thames

Oh dear, what is happening to this place? It used to be a great Kingston pub for real ale.

I went there the other night. The Sharps Doom Bar was off, even though the pump clip was facing us. A few others were off too, but again with the pump clip suggesting otherwise. I had a pint of Outlaw Pale Ale, which was nice, but I wanted the Doom Bar. Don't advertise beers that you haven't got on!

Also, the bar staff are slow, dippy and generally uninterested. I guess they are students.

If you want real ale and a warm welcome in Kingston, go to The Willoughby Arms instead.

22 May 2008 09:48

The Roundhouse, Covent Garden

A 'dodgy council estate pub'? What rubbish!
There's always a nice few ales on here.
I agree about the odd shaped bar though.
Have a couple here, then pop over the road to The Lamb And Flag.

1 May 2008 11:20

The Turks Head, Penzance

Great Doom Bar, lovely thai curry.
When I'm back in Penzance, I'll be back in here too.

30 Apr 2008 13:23

The Admiral Benbow, Penzance

Excellent pub. It was my first visit there this weekend.
Cracking place. I'll be drinking again in here when I'm next in Penzance.

30 Apr 2008 13:23

The Triple Crown Inn, Richmond

An excellent pub, slightly off the beaten track, but certainly worth a visit.

30 Apr 2008 13:02

The Sun, Richmond

I just love this pub! I always make a point of popping in when I'm in Richmond.
Joe and Margy run a brilliant ship and are always friendly.

30 Apr 2008 12:58

Shaftesbury Arms, Richmond

It's ok, but the landlord is a misery.
He once kept us waiting for 25 minutes after opening one Sunday lunchtime. He looked aggrieved that some people actually wanted to purchase drinks, when he was running late.

30 Apr 2008 12:57

The Nags Head, Mumbles

Now taken over by a young couple, who are doing lots of good stuff.
He tells me there'll be real beer in there 'soon'. He was sounding out what I liked. It'll be interesting to go back there when I'm next in the area and see what's happened

1 Feb 2008 14:49

The Dukes Head, Richmond

I've been taken here a few times now, for Sunday lunch and it's great. A very hearty lunch for 7.95, with cabbage too. The jam roly poly came with custard. You don't see that very often these days.
I had a good Twickenham beer here a couple of weeks ago and great Sharps beer before that.
