The James Young, Bathgate

Very busy place and the "Bangour tables" getting louder all the time. It must be a meeting point for alcoholics as I've never seen anyone with a soft drink! There appears to be a new addition to this place, a guy who laughs all the time. Methinks his previous job was in that wee glass container as you enter the Pleasure Beach in Blackpool. Good happy place now and the food certainly has improved.

Returned again to this "end of eternity, as we know it!). Never the same glass twice, good service though, eventually! Bar staff brilliant, crisps still poor and the Old Bangour tables "bursting at the seams" and I mean trousers!!
New additions as to previously mentioned:
Jumbo Joe, Davy Pudding, Benny the Pointer, not painter, Graeme with the shiny teeth??, Chris Bacon puss and Big Jock Knew, to mention a few!
Gives one something to learn and avoid for the future, God save the Children in this hovel!

Returned again to this hovel and was amazed to see a lady?? called Karen apparently, getting plied with wine as fatter Frank(enstein) was chatting her up, amongst others! The only place for people like these should be confined to a brothel as there are woman & kids around them, however, the bar staff leave a lot to be desired as they allow this to go on. I thought begging was illegal (bar staff don't understand by all appearances) untiI I saw a ragamuffin by the name of Flanagan praying for a free pint from the fat table. Appears that this wee freeloading pensioner has no shame and doesn't realise what he is doing IS illegal. As far as the lack of service is concerned, I'm amazed that the tills are kept busy and the duty female managers rear ends are getting bigger. Good packet of crisps though! This is the place to come if you like dodgy dealings, gambling, poor service, rubbish beer, and constant utterings of nonsense all day long and the odd intelligent conversation regarding the "motherboard" whatever that may be??

Returned to this den of iniquity 2 days ago and surprisingly the crisps were great. Same old faces, same terrible service and you never get a similar type glass twice for a particular beer. I also noticed what I would call the "looney" table, is getting more characters?? to it. You have 20 ton Tam, 2 ton Tommy, Fatter Frank, Jolly Jaykie, Freeloading Flanagan, Travelling John, Orange John, Retired John, Jolly Jock, The mad dentist and Alistair talk a lot, just to mention a few!
As far as the bar staff are concerned, that wee fat arsed girl, Sharon I think, is such a happy chappy and has a voice that that could break glasses. Surprised it's not happened already! Must be the only place where people who are banned from elsewhere can be served (eventually) good thing though, one will never get drunk in this place due to undertaker service.

First time back since Spring and the same old cardboard cut outs are still wasting their lives away in this run down establishment. Some are even getting fatter and certainly not fitter. Hard to believe they can still get belts to fit around their waists!

The Tap O' The Brae, Armadale

Excellent friendly establishment with good bar staff, reasonably priced drinks. Mainly for the more "mature" type person from what I saw but well worth a visit.

I returned to this place last week and thought I was in a gambling casino. There is a card school and money freely changes hand and the staff don't say a word to the perpetrators. I have even seen individuals eating their own sandwiches and another plumpish type guy pouring his own drink from a bottle which is kept in his bag.
How the devil do they get away with it? Have they no morals? No point complaining to staff as they can hardly serve you as it stands.

Coopers Bar, Blackridge

This must be the last pub on the road to hell. Couldn't swing a cat here if you tried. Beer rotten, bar staff no better and if there was a "happy smile club" they wouldn't get in for free. As for a working man's pub? looks like nobody here has had a job for years, if at all! Looks like the only Jobcentre with beer? on tap. Only good thing I would say about this place is: Demolish it now! Would put "Shameless" to shame.

The Dovehill Arms, Uphall

This must be the sleaziest of pubs that I have inspected so far. It is full of old men with young drunken portly ladies? hanging onto their wallets. The beer wasn't too good as it is geared towards the older type chap. The karaoki was even worse when this straggly haired drunken fat girl with a SKY logo on her top started screeching like a cat caught between 2 dogs. Won't be back.

The Oatrridge Hotel, Uphall

If this is the old codgers ideal way of spending their last days on earth then, I'm totally flummoxed. Old men lying steaming in their soiled trousers waving their bookie lines in the air when they win. Beer wasn't great either and the bar staff would be better employed as undertakers. The authorities could do no better than shut this den of iniquity down.

5 Jan 2011 20:02

The Volunteer Arms, Uphall

What a place, full of drunken pishy women where men can easily obtain their services!! Beer not too bad but fat women spoil the atmosphere. Won't be back.

5 Jan 2011 19:54

The Regal Bar, Armadale

First chance back here in years and it was so disappointing. Very drab, poor bar service, dodgy looking characters everywhere and a drunken guy by the name of Pape or Pope going on about when he knocked out Kefferty, whoever he is. You go in for a quiet pint and end up with a blow by blow account of Kefferty's injuries. What's that all about. This guy kept repeating himself and I don't know why he wasn't removed by bar person. maybe he had beat her up as well.
Won't be back due to this atmosphere. Well placed TV screens though.

5 Jan 2011 16:47

The Badgers Brook, Broxburn

Should be called the Badgers Breath. This place is stinking, full of dead beats and looks as if it's not seen paint since it was first opened. Won't be back.

5 Jan 2011 16:31

The Central Point, Bathgate

Now called Deadnought Rock. Good for the music but if you want a drink and atmosphere downstairs, forget it. There's an old boy serving behind the bar and it looks like he turned up for work at the wrong place. Probably should have been working at Brodies just further along. Never smiles, always grumpy and can't pour the beer properly. Maybe he's been not long in the trade and by the look of his age, probably won't have much time left either within. Won't be back.

5 Jan 2011 16:29

The Buckshead Tavern, Armadale

The end of the earth is nigh and if you believe that then this is the place to be. They all stoat about like zombies and I don't know if they pay extra for the watery style beer. Don't know if it's legal and proper spirits they serve as the folk seem to ready for the "cuckoos nest" whilst on them. Even the crisps are rotten. Won't be back.

5 Jan 2011 16:24

Bar 17 Sports Bar, Dedridge

Sports Bar?? Most hostile atmosphere coupled with sloppy type beer and same with bellies. Only sport you'll get here is kick boxing. Won't be back.

The James Young, Bathgate

Forgot to mention in previous comments that there is a table which is always full to over capacity and the noise which comes from it is ridiculous and the staff do nothing about it. There are a couple of plumpish type guys always there who look like cardboard cut outs until it is time for more guzzle. Not a place for kids with those sort of people about.

5 Jan 2011 16:13

The Paraffin Lamp, Livingston

First review and there won't be a second from me as the place is the pits. Full of jakeys, junkies, pregnant unwed women amongst the rest of the dead beats and down & outs. Shame really as it was a decent pint and friendly staff.

5 Jan 2011 16:07

The Railway Tavern, Bathgate

Forgot to mention another thing about this place, on the 2nd January there was a drunken soldier through from Edinburgh it appeared, plastered out of his face, who had also soiled his trousers but still got served! He even gave a performance of how NOT eat a sausage supper before being helped out to a taxi by another wee plump track suited top balding staggering chap with glasses. Won't be back.

5 Jan 2011 15:56

Happy Valley, Edinburgh

A very apt name for this den of iniquity. How the regulars can afford the prices here, I don't know, as it appears that is run mainly for the crest fallen and unemployed. Apparently this was one of the venues that the Susan Boyle and her type of person frequented.

5 Jan 2011 15:46

The Glenmavis Tavern, Bathgate

This place should be closed down due to lack of atmosphere, unfriendly staff and a regular supply of knuckle draggers coming and going. Loud swearing seems to be the norm for this low life place. Won't be back.

5 Jan 2011 15:39

Coppies Bar, Armadale

Reasonably good for the bigot type person. During the Rangers v Celtic game on 2nd January when I was in, there was this big half baldy chap with his wife watching the game and the language from his tongue was vile to say the least, especially in front of his wife. There were also a few times he nearly had a heart attack and a deaf man would have heard him a mile away. Point in this was that the bar staff should have removed this buffoon before he did himself and other people any damage. Apart from that, quite good.

5 Jan 2011 15:34

The Cavalier Inn, Armadale

Not a bad wee pub for funeral parties as the regulars look as though they're half dead themselves.

5 Jan 2011 15:28

The Louden Tavern, Glasgow

This pub is SIMPLY the BEST. Wonderful customers, cheery and super efficient staff, and a warm welcome is always given. Incredible atmosphere whether game is on or not. Celtic supporters not really welcome though, and thankfully.

5 Jan 2011 14:24

The Lamp Post, Glasgow

No atmosphere and the customers appear to be cardboard cut outs.

5 Jan 2011 14:18

The Bristol Bar, Glasgow

Excellent pub, great atmosphere.

5 Jan 2011 14:16

Glen's Bar, Bathgate

The pub isn't too bad apart from the alcoholic old dear behind the bar and an annoying twat with a Rangers skip cap on babbling away about computers to and old guy with white hair and a set of wallies that would credit shergar.

5 Jan 2011 12:33

The Masons Arms, Bathgate

A Junkies paradise - the place to be if you like that sort of stuff. As previously stated by another scribe, the lady bartender is forever describing her anatomy. Shame about the face though.

5 Jan 2011 12:28

The Engine Room, Bathgate

If you fancy hand to hand combat or kick boxing - this IS the place to be. There are more Police here than customers on occasions.

5 Jan 2011 12:22

The Tower Bar, Livingston

Stay clear if you don't like Republican propaganda and same type music.

5 Jan 2011 12:15

The Tower Bar, Livingston

Stay clear if you don't like Republican propaganda and same type music.

5 Jan 2011 12:15

The Railway Tavern, Bathgate

Dearest pub in Bathgate with proprietor Mr Smillie and staff leaving a lot to be desired. Smillie by name but NOT by nature!

5 Jan 2011 12:13

The New Royal Bar, Bathgate

Excellent pub with cheery staff albeit pricey.

5 Jan 2011 12:10

The Lounge, Bathgate

Excellent pub with good service and staff although it's a bit pricey - only fault.

5 Jan 2011 12:09

The Livery Lounge, Bathgate

This pub is nothing but trouble and should carry a health warning. If you want drugs-this IS the place. If you want trouble-this is the place. If you want staff who don't know how to smile-this is the place. Steer well clear if you've got any sense or decency at all! There are more Police in attendance here than the Police Station itself. How does Mr McGinley keep his licence?

5 Jan 2011 12:06

The James Young, Bathgate

Definitely the worst service ANYWHERE. At prime times staff are on their break. Have they never thought of "queue busting"? Only one person most of the time serving and on occasions, including meals to table.
