The Selkirk, Tooting

Been in this pub a few times and was in just recently on a visit to London. I had an outstanding pint of Wandle Ale, in fact I had two or three over the course of an afternoon. No complaints with the beer at all but I had the feeling that this place is trying to re-position itself as a food out-let that sells beer rather than a pub that sells food. If I was going on a pub crawl in Tooting, this one would be first on the list as an early visit, while you don't need to actively think about your behaviour.

Dog and Gun, Keswick

No wonder that this pub is so busy. Excellent array of ales on offer. The Landlords Choice was the best pint that I have had in a while. Dog friendly, beer friendly, people friendly, eating friendly. Owners that drone on about the smoking ban crippling their trade should have a look at this place. On a dark, rainy Thursday afternoon, this place was full up, while other nearby pubs only had the TV for company.

Royal Oak, Ambleside

This pub is like a tardis in reverse as it is a lot smaller on the inside. Sustantial list of hand pulls on offer, decent food at fair prices and efficient services. The only but, is that we were in on a Monday afternoon and less than a dozen people made the eating area almost cramped. The owners needs to look at the way this pub is set up. The outside area would be a feature draw in the summer months though, and perhaps that is when this place rakes in the dosh.

The Castle, Tooting Broadway

Dropped in here last Thursday night as The Antelope was busy and we wanted a seat. Bad move. Beer that was sour and bitter, and a barmaid with a face to match. As for the assorted customers? Bottom feeders at best. Once a cosy, friendly local, now hitting the skids.

White Lion Hotel, Ambleside

Ducked in here this afternoon and found it to be very welcoming indeed. Comfy chairs and efficient service and enough info on display to suggest that this pub is well liked by locals. A very cheery barmaid as well who has very good manners. The only issue I had was with the ale on offer. This area has some truly magnificent beers but it wasn't obvious that these were being either offered or promoted. The most prominent hand pull was from a long standing Scottish brewery and the beer that we finally settled on was Liberation Ale from the Channel Islands. Superb example of a summer ale/IPA line, but a bit out of place maybe.

Archibald Simpson, Aberdeen

An above average Spoons bar IMO. The door security is about right for any city centre pub and that was reflected by the easy going and relaxed atmosphere inside. The publicised chain commtiment to micro-breweries and more obscure ales has to be applauded. A set price of 1.80 a pint meant that my exceptional pint of Deuchars was 1.50 less than I had been charged in another pub nearby. One drinker ordered a pint of Burton Bridge Bitter and while it was taking ages to settle, the head barman came across and said, order another drink, and take that for no charge. The he told the other barman to turn the tap around saying, we can't sell that to customers. That is a good way to run a bar.

The Tilted Wig, Aberdeen

Been a while since I was in here and last time they had about half a dozen hand pulls all reasonably kept. Last night, went in to get out of the rain and cos I could hear a band playing. The ban were dreadfull and too loud and the beers have gone. Settles for McEwans export which is routinely a good pint badly served. When I was handed an ice cold glass, it was bad news.

The Antelope, Tooting

First time in for me since it was Jack Beards and what a change!!! Rather than just having a few drinks and then heading on for nosebag, both activities were adequately catered for on site. Real ales superbly kept. Quick and polite service even though it was very busy. Can't remember the last time I was offered either a mug [the heavy double glazed kind] or a straight glass for the beer. Imagine that in Jacks?...maybe if it was chose your weapons. Superb.

The Allsop Arms, Marylebone

Dropped in here yesterday as it is handily placed next to the bus stop for the Stanstead pick up point. Good selection of beers and wines on offer and the bar itself while quiet, looked immaculate. The Greene King IPA was spot on. Not sure that I would concurr with the comments about the staff though. The squad that were in yesterday afternoon must have all been on their first day as they all looked genuinely confused when I attempted to order drinks. Then two of the used the till at the same time and the barman looked almost dumfounded when I questioned the demand for nearly 9 for a pint, a small cola and two bags of crisps. Some training required maybe.

Globe, Kendal

Initialy not sure about this place. Had the studded chavs at the bar who are genetically programmed to reject anything in a glass that is not lager, the over-made up older females with the wine and sodas, and the old beardy guys giving their chunky knit x-mas jerseys and airing, while smelling of leafy pipe tobacco with the real ales. Still, for a busy Friday afternoon, it was a cheery mix. The pint of Bomber that I had was exceptional. And the barmaid was very pleasant indeed.

The Royal Oak, Bowness on Windermere

Decent enough pub and obviously well liked by locals but the service on Friday past was a shambles. Just now every pound is a prisoner and every pint could be the way into a few pints and maybe a whisky or two and then something to eat. But not with only one barman and more than a dozen people at the bar. The hand-pulls were falling over like dominoes, but fair is fair, the Mothbag was very good indeed.

Thomsons, Dundee

Since the last posting, this place has closed down been re-furbished and opened again as it now back to the top of it's game as a decent boozer. Does not get a huge amount of students which is a surprise given its' position. Best pint of 70' in Dundee.

Frew's Bar, Dundee

I used to live above this pub and absolutely loved it. Beers kept well and served by properly trained bar staff who know what they are doing rather than are working in a pub cos they can't get a gig anywhere else. The hand pulled Bass is always superb.

19 Nov 2009 23:05

Caw's Bar, Dundee

I am sure that this could be a contender for a tv show that mixes the best bits from Benidorm and Shameless. Culture and cliches

19 Nov 2009 23:02

The Plough Inn, Forfar

Maybe the landlord is trying to please to many customer groups but it is encouraging to see decent hand pulled real ales in a town where sometimes getting a decent pint of anything is an achievement.

Mariners, Bowness on Windermere

What a shame. Used to love coming in here on my hols to the lake district. Still serves well kept Jennings ales but the entertainment now is just awfull. Saturday past, when you could have looked forward to a live band, the fare on offer was three half-jaked teenagers spitting on the pavement at the front door each trying to light a fag like it was an agility round from the Krypton Factor. 5 out of 5 for the ale. 0 out of 5 for the rest.

The Churchill Hotel, Ambleside

Dodged in here out of the rain yesterday. Huge array on beers on offer and three Hawkshead hand-pulls in offer. Tried a pint of Ambleside Ale and was very nice indeed. Have to say that although this pub is set out well, it felt a bit intimidating as the locals that were in, were not interested in any other liquid other than that coming out of the Stella tap. It made me laugh that the locals were handed forms for a pub quiz, but these never came the way of outsiders like us. Maybe the accents and having two eyes makes us stand out. Could be a business that is sure of its' trade, and its' trade is not tourists. To be honest, I can see the point in that.

18 Nov 2009 17:47

The Oddfellows Arms, Keswick

Popped into this place this afternoon for a quick lunch and a drink. Good tip is too avoid the menus and go for the specials board as those seem to be three or four quid cheaper. Two haddock and chips and peas for under 8 is value in my book. Two pints of Cockerhoop beautifully kept and served was the perfect drink.

18 Nov 2009 17:38

The Albert, Windermere

You would wonder if this establishment should really be considered as a resturaunt that sells beer rather than a pub that does food. Quite busy when we were in but felt a bit uncomfortable in that it appeared to be an issue that we wanted to sit at a table, but not order any food, even though there were no seats at the bar. No great fan of Robinson's beer but the pint of Double was top notch. For beer only, this is perhaps a post watershed [ after nine] place.

18 Nov 2009 17:33

The Castle, Tooting Broadway

I was in The Castle for swift couple on the same day as the Charity Shield game and to be honest, I felt like I was getting in the way. Not the greatest fan of Youngs beer and if there is a bitter, that is more bitter than Youngs bitter I have not yet tasted it. Not too much to ask bar staff to turn the labels around if the beer is not on. Apparrently the cider was top notch but the soft drinks for the littles were shocking.

The Glen Clova Hotel, Glenclova

Perfect way to finish off a days' walking or climbing. Perfectly served pint of Calders 70 which can be truly awful if not kept properly. Refurbished area for the pool table and darts board.

The Ingram Bar, Glasgow

One of my favourite city centre pubs. Shame that on Hogmany there were only two pints of Abbot Ale left before the barrel ran dry. A decent alternative was supplied in the shape of Santa's Sledgehammer which went down very well with the odd whisky. Trade seems to be suffering just now with the scaffolding outside, but this place is worth a visit.

The Railway Bell, Tooting

The comment posted by the new landlord is fair. I am no shrinking violet and having a accent that is hardly local has made me genuinely frightened to go in here. But that has all changed now. A decent boozer for a night out with company but even better place if you are out for a swift swallow and want decent beer and a blokey chat, with a sore face not being part of the night out. Thumbs up!!

23 Dec 2008 15:12

The Shakespeare Inn, Kendal

This is a decent pub. Good mix of locals and holidaymakers. A landlord that seems actually pleased to see you and would appear to be really enthusiastic about beer. Fullers LP kept better and priced cheaper than some London pubs. Deuchars IPA maybe a bit on the cold side but no argument with the price.

20 Oct 2008 09:31

John Peel Inn, Bowness on Windermere

This pub was a bit of a let down. Looks like a place where you may get a decent choice of beers, but despite claims about proper ale on offer only one hand pull was on. Decent pint of Theakstons though.Looks like lager and blue wicked are more their crowd.

20 Oct 2008 09:20

Mariners, Bowness on Windermere

If you like Jennings beer, this is the place to drink it. Does not look like much of a pub, but they can turn out to be the best.

20 Oct 2008 09:17

The Hole int' Wall, Bowness on Windermere

Pub would appear to be a good mix of holiday makers and bed and breakfast owners. If you go later on at night and at this time of year [autumn months], the location may out you off as it looks too dark to be safe, but well worth a visit. Huge array of drinks on offer.

20 Oct 2008 09:15

The Dalmeny Bar, Leith

No frills pub that does what it says on the tin. Has that look about it, that brand new pubs that want to look old try and fail to re-create. You could go up and down Leith Walk all afternoon and not get a better pint of 70.

1 Oct 2008 15:39

JJ Moons, Tooting

You know sometimes, when you see pubs that don't charge the earth for drinks and you wonder what they have cut back on? Step inside this boozer and you will soon find out. The decor and punters and staff are almost one terrifying cliche. If anyone wonders where the pondlife have resurfaced after the Mitre's re-branding as the Long Room...well come on down.

29 Sep 2008 16:31

The Porcupine, Leicester Square

Good "afternoon" pub that gets really busy later on and has more customers outside than in. Decent priced food as well. They make a selling point of that fact that Fullers LP is on sale at 2.50 [good pint] and that other guest ales have tasting notes and are try before you buy. Don't expect this after work places begin to empty though as this place quickly turns into a lager-fest.

26 Sep 2008 10:30

The Kings Head, Tooting

Great new look to this pub. The deep leather chairs and fireplace shout out for winter sessions. Only gets a 5 cos this place is a bit pricey. Beer is about average but the " soft drink" was nearly 3.

25 Sep 2008 08:34

The Griffin Bar, Glasgow

Dependable pint of Velvet or Belhaven best in here. The speakeasy type seats make this place fill up with not a lot of people actually in. Never seems to be enough bar staff either [ Saturday past anyway.]Good starting pub though.

23 Jun 2008 13:18

The State Bar, Glasgow

One of my favourite Glasgow pubs. Five real ales on offer [21/06/08] , good choice of IPA [my tipple]and a list of forthcoming beers. Well set out so that you can catch the football on the big screens, but discreet enough for a quiet pint. Perhaps a bit pricey given all the nearby competiton, but I have never had a bad pint in this place or ever seen any trouble

23 Jun 2008 13:10

The Anchor Tap, Tower Bridge

Hidden gem. No obvious lack of quality of facilities that you can see in other pubs that don't charge the earth for drinks.
